  • My favourite ever sporting moment. Goosebumps. And I'm an aussie surfer who knows nothing about running except that Haille was and always will be the best. Thanks for posting this vid!

  • they ran a 10k in the time it took me to run a 5k. :(

  • The one white guy would get smoked.

  • What a strong kick, for such a "small" guy! Brilliant. So inspiring!

  • Reminded me of 68 when Temu beat Wolde...

  • @Gauchoo1234 Haile Gebrslassie just beat him tho...

  • LOL at the white kid

  • Emperor of Ethiopia indeed

  • fantastic moment and fantastic commentary.

  • best 10,000 meter ace of all time

  • @ToFinishFirst Could agree more! We'll never see something like this again

  • First class commentary.

  • a 12 second 100 m dash to the finish wow

  • @TehUltimateSnake More like a 10.25 - 10.5. This shouldn't be a surprise because they were sprinting as hard as they possibly could.

  • @MrPhilosophicalpanda

Yeah and that's after 9,900m of hard running. They are just not human.

  • Haile Gebrslassie el mejor .. Sin duda alguna.

  • his such a little.... always just gets through ahaha

  • wow fantastic commentary bruce

  • omg the best performance of haile gebressilassie ever, unbelivable !!! i was so happy at that moment

  • solinsky could have won this race ...wow

  • awesome

  • I cannot watch that without getting all teary. What a race. What amazing athletes. I have never seen such a fast, all-out finish to a 10K like this. These guys embody the Olympic spirit for sure. Bruce nailed the race call, as usual. I will never forgot watching this in my mate's living room. Wow.

  • I would love to know what the time was for the last 200m. Anyone know?

  • @scrumpymanjack about 26 seconds.

  • @scrumpymanjack and that last 100 meters was 11.5 seconds

  • Kenya and Ethopia in running is like US and Canada in hockey. Sensational and remarkable.

  • @Runaholism US in Hockey??? Are you having a laugh? The USA are not even Canada's number 1 rivals. It has always been the Russians.

  • @jimbojimjimbo What I forgot to add was....they're neighbors. 8o)

  • @Runaholism That's not a fair comparison because you also have Russia, Sweden, Finland in hockey. Ethiopia & Kenya totally dominates the long distance running with the only threat being themselves.

  • Wow :)

  • Tengo la piel de gallina. This race gave me the thrills (or whatever you say in English to mean that my skin hair got stiff).

  • The greatest distance runner of all time.

  • Dude, I think thats one of the greatest finishes ever. The man couldn't be stopped.

  • @06mazzon look up billy mills

  • Comment removed

  • O yeah man, Billy Mills kicked it hard too. No discounting that. Sad to here, Geb is retiring after that NYC pull out.

  • People can say way the want about Geb basically running marathons now as time trials to break records, but guess what? He's still running the times. I don't care how someone goes about running a 2:03:59 marathon, the time just astonishes me. And to run the times he's running this late in his career makes it that much more remarkable. He's proven himself in the past in steep competition, and to be dead honest I think he's entitled to a few marathon wins where it's all about him. Geb, youre a hero

  • Yeah what a moment in sport. That has be one of the great 10000 runs in the history of the olympics, spine tingling stuff. The commentator is the Australia legendary sports presenter ' Bruce McAvaney'. Special!!!

  • What a champion. Ethiopians are the best of the best

  • "Kenya believe it?"

  • I hate that god damn bell. It gives everyone some adrenaline rush and suddenly, everyone is screaming.

  • Boutayeb ibrahim was only 21 when he won the 10.000m in seoul 1988 breaking the olympic records, even with walking virtualy during the last 20 m before the finish! who can find that clip? thats the best race in history.

  • the difference between haile gebrselassie and paul tergats finishes was less than the difference between sprinters in the 100m sprint event!

If you understand this statement you are just as astonished about the insanity of that as i am!!!!

  • epic

  • I really wonder if Kenenisa could hold on like Geb did, if he had such a competitor in all his 10,000meter races. I know Kenenisa is great but I still think Geb is the best Ethiopian runner still

  • emperor of ethiopia

  • The last 5....3 Kenyans and 2 Ethiopians....They both rule

  • the fastest always look slow

  • This is Haile Gebresilassie, the man the legend. Just another in a long list of Glorious Ethiopian Heroes. Ill never forget this race, man the WHOLE Addis Ababa was watching this race, Ill never forget the nations joy after Haile brought home the GOLD.

  • this is more exciting than watching usain bolt runs the 100m!

  • hell's ya that was the shit man...... Haile Gebrselassie living legend :)

  • astonishing!!!! That is what said the commentator, I couldn't agree any more!!! I love you Haile! You are my hero!!

  • astonishing!!!! That is what said the commentator, I couldn't agree any more!!!

  • O Bala vive ( a lenda do Parque)

  • i'd love to know this guys vo2 max

  • HOW GOOD WAS THAT???!!!???

Answer: Best Of All Time. Haile then had the WR and Tergat had the 2nd Fastest Time Ever. Best Versus The Best!!

  • I think Tergat is a better athelete than Haile. But Haile is more mentally tough than tergat. Therefore Haile is the better runner.

  • HE DOES!! CAN YA BELIEVE IT????!

  • Yeah, this is the best race I will ever see

  • I'm gonna go on a garden party on Monday thrown by Haile Gebrasselassie. And I'm not joking. I'm serious! I'm leaving for Ethiopia today :)

  • Mr. Haile train very hard, thats why he win, i watch his training here in youtube, and im so happy to see that he is very hardworking!

    Nahum

  • Great commentary. He really captured the moment.

Doesn't get any better than that last 100... Geb was simply the best ever. Zatopek and Viren are up there, but Geb faced the toughest competition the world has ever seen and ALWAYS came through. The man was simply pure gold on the track for the better part of a decade. Check out his 12:39 WR, his heart is unbelievable.

  • I´ll cry when i see this, He is unbelievable!!! SO dam good...for me his better then Bekele.

Do you know where i can find the worldrecord from 1997 when he just sprints from the kenyan?

  • No he's not. Bekele is definitely better at the 10k and the 5k. He's probably going to end up breaking the marathon record when he switches to the marathon also.

  • Bekele is very strong in 5000m and 10000m, i dont know if he is strong in 42.2 km

    Nahum

  • he might definitely beat geb's times but sammy wanjiru might take a huge chunk off the WR first that he never beats

  • @Poe22222 Geb is a genius.Zatopek is a God. He would have schooled all of them. The Greatest is the one who wins all 3 at the same time without cheating and has modern training methods everyone copied. Geb, Viren, Yifter, legends but they all bow down to the Greatest of them All. The Czech Locomotiv.

  • Haile is best of the best!

  • This is very inspirational. After someone makes there kick like that from the back it is so mentally defeating, and most people aren't able to go with the change of pace, but Haile pulled it off. Amazing

  • "what a race, what a moment!" love it. one of the best olympic races in history for sure

  • Haile IS God!

  • Haile king.

  • The guy run 10K to school and back every day what a hero. Western fat bastards take the day off cos they cant be fukked walking to the car

  • not much people know this but dis race was actually closer then the 100m

  • My absolute favourite moment from the Sydney Olympics - and I'm Australian! This man is an absolute legend.

  • A fabulous race. There is a longer version of this race with an English commentary which is lifeless. This is a great call by Bruce McAvaney. His co-commentator Rob de Castella was speechless.

  • You're absolutely right, bucketofwater: I watched the English version first and the commentator sounded like he was announcing the weather; this Aussie coverage of the race does it justice, the commentators get really caught up in the excitement of the moment... Haile's the best...
