  • Great song and blending of voices from the best guys around.

  • in the memory of

my. uncle killed his self some few

    years ago

i still say for those who has gone, to war

and. has the scars to show are not cowards

for killing them self is not a cowardly act but. an act of kindness!

only those who has gone out an a crime&killing spree then say's fuck it and kills them self

    that a cowardly act!!!!!!!

  • @fatmankrell I'm not sure I know what it is you are trying to say, or why, but I don't think you know what you are talking about when you refer to combat soldiers. Cowards, no. But, neither are we killers and/or suicidal.

  • TIME limited! The last 30 quotas to get iphone4! Q2Zsky accuc.info

  • Oh Jerry, you magnanimously allowed your name not being mentioned in the credit but without your slide guitar this song is nothing. No disrespect to CSNY, of course, whom i love too

  • Love these guys, I grew up with them.......just fantastic.........

  • I remember when this song came out,and it is still one of my favorites

  • used to listen to this on the radio, travelin down the road, lookin for new place to live every year at least, mother tryin to take care of us two kids, no job most of the time. "fathers hell" was our alchoholic father beating her up..yeah this song brings back memories alright...

  • @jedimaster8691 I hope your mother found a good place to raise her kids. I too lived with an alcoholic father and times were hard. Happy now but the ghost of our past always haunts us. Never really talked about it before. Perhaps attending a funeral today and getting a little morose listening to old tracks made me a bit melancholy...but just wanted to reach out a hand of friendship to a fellow human being who has perhaps walked in my mocassins a mile or two.

  • @gailgill1 been there and then some, I know the feeling. My thoughts and prayers go out to you

  • GREAT steel guitar work - by Jerry Garcia!

  • @Weasler455 most dont know that little piece of trivia.. right on

  • @Weasler455 Really! that's cool, I didn't know that.

  • @Weasler455 a few years ago I heard Crosby and Nash on Al Franken's radio show (they're all friends); they mentioned that the iconic pedal steel part was improvised by Garcia, on the spot, and the track you hear was his first take - while he was warming up and figuring out what to play (he may have recorded a second "real" take, but they used that first one). I'm not a big Jerry fan... but that's bloody amazing.

  • @MrFrench439 I agree. His pedal steel guitar work here is far more memorable than that of any country artist.

  • Such a sound! Like so many groups..their "sound" capped a generation. What characterized so much of what was unsaid...

I miss it in my heart.

  • Yes, but it also says teach your PARENTS well. It's a two-way street.

  • @dyad2r1 Isn't that such a beautiful twist in the lyrics? We think we teach our children everything but they end up teaching us as well. As parents, we are as ignorant as our children at all this family stuff. We learn from each other. I am enchanted by the gentle love that this song gives to the world everytime I hear it.

  • the best ever song by the crosby ,still young and nash...if only all songs are like this..what a music could it be...awesome!!!!

  • Pedal steel is Jerry Garsia, Greatful Dead.

  • Just beautfull....make a time machine so i can go back to the sixties and escape all this crap we call music nowadays

  • @MrStevie777

    Your'e so right !

    Timeless song, masterpiece.

  • Blackbird: That's gross! Reagan vs Mondale? I think of beautiful hippie girls walking in the California sunset...

  • my thanks today, for the inspiration, the wisdom, and the smile in my heart!

  • I loved this song, as it was healing between the generations. My parents were bewildered by the hippy element, and their daughter danced barefoot to these songs! It helped me love them more, and appreciate them, though I wish I had shown it more...Such a wise song.

  • I STILL HAVE THE REAL ALBUM BOUGHT IT WHEN IT CAME OUT

  • I am just blown away by the warmth of the recording. Who said analog sound was a thing of the past. Irreplacable as far as I'm concerned.

  • ThankGod for YouTube.

  • Un bel messaggio di pace fatto da grandi della musica.WOW!

  • If we all taught our children well the world would be Much better!

  • @MrDasbest your right

  • 1 dislike?hmmp,well..maybe he/she dont know how to teach his/her children..peace!

  • ...because the past is just a good-bye...thank you!

  • for everyone that loves Jerry's guitar on this tune, listen to a tune called "The Wheel" (studio version) by Jerry Garcia Band....excellent steel pedal guitar on that tune!

  • how is it whenever i hear this song, it always reminds me if the regan vs mondale presidential campaign ?

  • @sr71ablackbird Well.......there you go again.

  • @tpage6 mcloud lol.

  • @sr71ablackbird Well it reminds me of my mum dancing around the lounge with me as a toddler in her arms. Which of the two were happier times I'll let you decide. :)

  • @sr71ablackbird

Cause your a dummy. Move on.

  • this song was my mom's favorite,,miss you mom,,R.I.P.

  • Teach your children, Our house, Everybody I love you . . . When the music was right.

  • Pedal steel guitar by the late great Jerry Garcia !

  • @ragyps and what's even more greater than that, is that it took him only 6 months to learn how to play the pedal steel guitar.

  • listen to Richie Havens version

  • wish British family court judges would listen to this

  • one of the greatest songs !!!

  • I always think of my fiancee and his two grown children when I hear this song. especially the last few lines!

  • Young &Taylor were there on Deja Vu

  • great steel guitar on this song, played by jerry garcia

  • What it means: Teach Your Children Well, from the story "Woman at the Well" (John 4:10)Stop Over-populating the World by sexual intercourse, Teach the holy virgin birth method.

  • great song and great pedal by jerry garcia. love how he just drifts in and out of there. just like he played lead with the grateful dead

  • This was recorded without Young.

  • @Jessyleppert But comes from the 1970 "Deja Vu" album that also bares his name.

  • @tpage6 i can hear him

  • @tpage6 So, remove Young here

  • @Jessyleppert I think he does........

  • What does Jerry Garcia have to do with this song. Wiccans beleive they do good. Not sure about that but I know my parents loved me.

  • @iiKoOkieZ He plays Steel Pedal Guitar.

  • WOW,,i have wore this song out listning . The steel is awsome,,i play some pedal steel and keep trying to play this the way Jerry does ! Geat steel playing !!

    Jim.

  • @jimkenslu What I like best about the song is the harmony and the great steel guitar.

  • ARTIST: Graham Nash,TITLE: Teach Your Children, Lyrics: You who are on the road Must have a code that you can live by And so become yourself Because the past is just a good-bye Teach your children well Their father's hell did slowly go by And feed them on your dreams The one they pick's the one you'll know by Don't you ever ask them why If they told you, you would cry So just look at them and sigh And know they love you
  • Long Live Jerry's Strings

  • I love CSNY as well as Jerry.... The steel playing by Jerry fits the tune. I play pedal steel professionally, currently touring... and understand the comment regarding Jerrys playing on this. However, as rudimentary as it is, it fits perfectly and was one of the songs that got me interested in playing steel. Personally, I love it...

  • Steel Guitar --- Jerry Garcia. Who else?

  • @Embracus Apparently Garcia went in for this session on steel guitar and the performance you hear is what he recorded on the run through. After laying this down he said 'OK I've got it now, lets record it' and everyone in the control room said 'NO! thats it!'. You can hear the way he just hangs on to the coat tails of the music - its one of the most beautiful pieces of guitar playing ever.

  • Steel Guitar -- Jerry Garcia. Who else?

  • I think this song to me, is about all my bitterness and resentment towards my parents and in some welcome or unwelcomed closure to have further understandings of where they're coming from and make peace with those feelings.

  • My daughter had this song for her wedding and danced with her dad and groom danced with his mom for first parents dance, loved it !

  • My daughter had this song for her wedding and danced with her dad and groom danced with his mom for first parents dance, loved it !

  • ABSOLUTELY AWESOME THNX HAPPY 2011

  • Been looking for this gem for a long time. LOVE IT!!

  • Long live REAL music! pffft to the "top ten" 'artists' of today -- studio enhanced low/no talent thugs and divas. Live on CSN&Y!

  • CLASSIC! this song used to be by my PARENTS song for me! I AM NOT PERFECT! WHO IS?

  • @bnotes17 If that was your parents song for you, you are blessed and way younger than me...be grateful.xoxox

  • @bnotes17 , God

  • all I can say, JERRY

  • Jerry Garcia was great on the pedal steel, may he rest in peace

  • This my shit!.......

  • If angels could sing.......

  • JERRY.......sigh........

  • @ripple1967 I will never forget Jerry!

  • @ripple1967 You beat me

  • @ripple1967 sigh too here.still miss him.

    the don from holland

  • @axtlanjp more or less it's to share the insight you've learned in life ("their father's hell did slowly go by"), but to let them make their own decisions, have their own dreams, and live their own life

  • I don't understand some passages of this beautiful song.

Could you explain the meaning or paraphrase ?

(And feed them on your dreams)

    " The one they pick's

The one you'll know by. "

" Don't you ever ask them why "

  • Don't you ever ask them why

If they told you, you would cry

So just look at them and sigh

    And know they love you

  • Great song..great harmony ..great musicians makes me think of Jimmy Buffet's song "are we the people our parents warned us about" haha I love my kids ♥

  • This Generation needs to hear this song.

  • @BBQFanNo1 Buddy, EVERY generation needs to hear this song! This very well might be my favorite song, and that covers a LOT of years. I think I could listen to it continuously. TPage6, THANK YOU for posting this! There are versions available without Neil Young, but it just isn't CSNY without him. Gonna stop writing now and go back to harmonizing with these guys.

  • my mother raised me on this song .. such a child of the 60s

  • Garcia was as good a pedal steel guitarist as any country music star!

  • The pedal steel guitar is played by Jerry Garcia on this tune.

  • @pfgfinan hey, didn't it take Jerry only about 6 months to learn the pedal steel before he did this song ?

  • great steel guitar allrite!

wow.. haven't heard this in a long time...

luved it back then... luv it now.
