He is just showing the basics of what you can do with it. You can import .obj files from 3D programs and texture your models directly in photoshop.

Say you were illustrating a children's book, or something. You'd probably need to illustrate the same objects or characters numerous times at different angles, and consistency is important. if you create a 3 model once and use it over and over, it's a huge time saver. That's just one possibility!
