It's so cool to see the California drive in the 1960s! I lived in California in the 1990s and I can recognize a few things in the video: The Gaviota Pass in 2:22 and the Andersen's Restaurant (known for pea soups; located in Buellton) in 2:34.
wow so cool to see SLO and 101 freeway the way it was 45 years ago, we should have a historic videos and pictures of san luis obispo in this peace of heaven that is san luis obispo county !
I recognize :11 where the car is getting on the freeway in Pomona or Diamond Bar. I took that ramp heading back from CSU Pomona to Pasadena every weekend. Looks a little different now - there's a Wendy's there. Later on it looks like we see some old warehouses on the 10 approaching downtown, which appear to look the same today as they were then.
My folks thought there was a lot of traffic in the Fifties, "Where did all the cars come from?", they often said. Look up Wild ride down Cuesta with no engine on YouTube, for neat old cars in the early Sixties, before Cuesta was widened, old billboards, not much traffic.
I couldn't believe how relatively empty the freeways were....and the tunnels leading into Solvang (Yeah I know, Solvang is off the beaten path so to speak, but I always knew I was close to the towm when we went through those tunnels)
What an amazing time machine video. The California freeway signs look contemporary but the cars are from another era. The 101 Gaviota tunnel is right from the movie "The Graduate" and Pea Soup Andersen's in Buelton was in business way back in 1963!
Great stuff Aroid. Oddly enough, I have been transplanted in the opposite direction. I grew up in Morro Bay in the 50s and 60s, and lived in SLO in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Sadly, I had to make the move to Rancho Cucamonga in 2002. Your videos really take me back home. Thanks so much for posting. If you have any more, PLEASE put them up.
I love all of you're historic videos!! I lived in Camarillo, Ventura County, CA for 15 years and I recognized the Conejo Grade 1:20. Is that part from 1:37 to 1:48 all Camarillo too?
This film is a treasure. Takes us back to a simpler time. Thanks for sharing!
