Both cars are great in their own way. About eight years ago I chose the xjr over the m5 simply because there are fewer of them on the road.
And to those that are saying the jag does not handle, it has computer controlled suspension as standard (cats). And how often do you drive on a race track ?
Clarkson put the M5 at #10 in the list of greatest cars of the last century and completely forgot about the Jag? I love JC but his swings in mood and preference are a bit strange.
As for the cars, I've driven an M5 and absolutely loved it. Haven't driven the Jag, would really like to one day if I get the chance. It's certainly got a more grand image.
"I'm a Jag man". NO JEREMY! You're a biased twat who will even take a fucking Rover over a Mercedes SLR just out of straight jealousy against the Germans. Idiot....
@mclarensennaf1 Ford bought Jaguar in late 1989. When the production run for the 1995-1997 X300 came out most of the parts were Ford made and Jaguar stamped. From about 1995 and on Ford funded the Jaguar brand so it could afford more reliable parts and jaguar has become a very dependable name. The new Jags are junk but any Ford Jag (1995-2009) is very reliable and a well made machine.
@mclarensennaf1 There's also an old saying that goes "The number 2 is spelled two, not to." Jaguars are amazing vehicles, yet often times people who have never driven feel the need to insult them. As a Jag owner, all I'm going to say is "Haters gonna hate!" Keep it real.
@mclarensennaf1 - That's why it's an old saying, because it's no longer true. Jaguars are now one of the most reliable cars you can buy. I think they are the second most reliable cars in the world behind Lexus. These days you need to buy two Mercs, as they've slipped down the reliablity table very dramatically. BMW are starting to slip too, but only ever-so-slightly.
@sigmaman93 idk I think to say its the 2nd most reliable car in the world is pretty steep. there are a lot of reliable cars and Lexus is definitely one of them. jd power didn't give the new xj a very good rating. but then again they gave the 7 series and the jag a worse performance rating than the s class so idk.
@mclarensennaf1 I am pretty sure in 2008 or 2009 the Jaguar X358 model (still under Ford's line) took 1st place as the most reliable luxury sedan of the year. Jag before being bought out by Ford lacked the funding for research and testing on their parts. Jags before Ford were simply put together and sold. Once ford funded Jaguar 1989-2009 they became quite the reliable car. The 1995-1997 X300 straight 6 Jaguar is almost bullet proof and when taken care of last 200,000mi with minimal repairs.
@Penisbaby101 Nah as a fan and a son of an owner of one I have to say Ford ruined Jaguar and now they've got funding from Tata they're better than ever.
@LukeNAESA10 I respect your opinion, fact is that Ford simply funded Jaguar and kept the Jaguar company financially set. Ford didnt do anything else. The engineering, ideas, models, and everything else was still carried out by Jaguar of Coventry England like they were before Ford bought Jaguar. Tata took right over and thats why the new Jaguar saloons look like Infinitis and every other look alike car now a days. Ford funded Jaguar, Tata changed Jaguar. There is a big difference.
@Penisbaby101 Ford did change Jaguar and hugely too. In many ways for the better. The x-type was done mostly by Ford and Jag still buys engines from Ford. Tata are completely hands off so far - the only thing they provide is cash. There were some sticks in the mud at Ford which is why the styling never changed. e.g. the insistance of round headlamps on the 1st gen XF. Now Jag has been unleashed. If you don't like the styling of the new cars, blame Ian Callum and his team.
@ruddypeasant I do agree and dont think of the X-Type or S-Type as being a Jaguar. My main point is that Ford funded Jaguar and left the flagship models XK/XJ up to Jaguar to bring to Market and sell.
I work for an international marketing firm and we have many contacts in India that help automotive companies Market. Tata is funding "Jaguar", but making them come up with models that Tata approves for market. Instead of letting a Jaguar be a Jaguar they are now nitpicked Tata designed vehicles.
@ruddypeasant The design and engineering is done in the UK yes, but it has to be brought to Tata and they have to approve it for market. Jaguar is responsible for bringing designs Tata approves of to Tata instead of designing, engineering, and then marketing vehicles with no outside influence. Some of the brokerage/marketing firms we work with bring to market a majority of Tata products from their many companies not just the automotive branch. Tata only invests in what they approve of.

There both great cars. To bad the BMW is so unreliable. The XJR really only has the chain tensioner problem to worry about. I know some of you are gonna say the nikasil is also a problem but if that hasn't shown its ugly head yet your definitely in the clear by now. Most of those problems were revealed early on!
Dont own either of these cars not the type of cars i would drive but if i had to have either it would be the Jag, reason being Bmws are everywhere and the image that they project driver wise for me is wide boys toys no class like jag. @wikichris Only the earlier models. Starting in mid-2000 XJR's did not use Nikasil. And BMW's "research" led to them using Nikasil in their engines too, just a couple years prior.
how can you hate jaguar its total a badass mobster car, always have produced powerful engines, always ran fest ( luxury & sportscar ), gorgeous looks and exclusivity, especially with the new models.
Hmm, I'm torn. I ADORE both cars. Thing is, the Jag is physically bigger, it's softer (you can see it wallow more), and the BMW's interior quality (in terms of switchgear at least) is rather better. Also, while BMW only built a handful of E39 M5 Tourings, you can at least swap the M5's bits over into a 540i Touring body easily. With the XJ, there IS no estate version. Also, the Jag was only available with a 5-speed slushmatic, whereas the BMW got a six-speed manual gearbox. I'll have the BMW.
I vote BMW, I see more of them and I think that the jag looks kind of ugly to be truthful. I have always liked BMW and Mercedes tons, but I don't want to argue, we all have our opinions.
i bought a 2000 xjr for just 3.5 k just before christmas . The difference is when you pull up beside a boy racer in a jag and whip his butt he is shocked . in an m5 he knows he has no chance !!!! Both gr8 cars !
i bought a 2000 xjrfor just 3.5 k just before christmas . The difference is when you pull up beside a boy racer in a jag and whip his butt he is shocked . in an m5 he knows he has no chance !!!! Both gr8 cars !
The difference between the Jag and the BMW is that the Jag still looks cool and timeless while the BMW looks like an old car. Still love both of them though. :-)
I love the ending! Absolutely befitting at the end because that military vehicle, either the Scorpion or the Scimitar, are both powered by the Jaguar XK 4.2 litre in-line 6 cylinder engine! HAH! Take that, BMW! Well, ok......at least BMW flat twin motorcycles served in Nazi Germany military and BMW engines were in the Luftwafe fighter aircraft. Thank God they didn't use a BMW military vehicle against the XJR in the video shoot! Ugghh! :-p
If anyone watching this is considering a used XJR, you should know that a transmission replacement is $15,000. They are special ones from Mercedes Benz.
@Canam7 Yes they are Mercedes Benz transmissions but are $3k-$5k depending. Still very expensive though. These Jags can be had so cheap now for those reasons. They can be purchased off the lot for not to much out of pocket, but then when the repairs start people realize they really cant afford a Jaguar and neglect it until they realize their dream of being a Jaguar owner is over and they need to sell. I see X308s with as low as 60,000mi in such rough shape from neglect, very sad.
Could anybody tell me how the rear diff of jaguar xjr controlled? Is it e-diff? or like that brake support thing? I have been wondering long time. Pls somebody let me know.
Its an open diff with electronic traction and stablity control. If you are inclined, LSD rear diffs existed before the V8 XJR, and one company even makes a replacement rear diff that uses Ford 9" ring and pinion. Which means you will A. never break it, and B. have huge options for ratios and LSD types.
That video Rocks! thats the best one I've seen on U-Tube. I have an xj-8 and in Philadelphia Pa. it's king of the hill . Iconic style; every mercedes stops to look my way and the BMW drivers need that little nerd box to feel like they have a chip in the big game. But the Jag is like 007 league,I puff cohebas, hang my breitling out the window and roll on the throttle, can't touch this! Chef Luigi out.
They are both PHENOMENAL cars, in their own rights. They just appeal to different buyers. Most people looking to buy an M5 are not going to consider an XJR and vice versa. And I must say that if anyone refers to either of these cars as 'crap' (particularly the Jaguar) then that person is quite stunned and needs to have their head read.
People must realize that these are two very different animals. On paper they may compete very closely, however, the overall experience is vastly different. I have driven several E39 M5s. I also have driven an XJR. The M5, of course has a manual trans. whereas the Jag, an auto. The Jag is much more quiet and sophisticated feeling. The M5 feels much sportier. Regarding looks, the BMW is awesome, but the Jag is simply classic. They are both immensely fast (and I would know ;)
It really comes down to what you want. The both are so close in all aspects. Here in the US its nice to see a Jag once in a while because everyone has a BMW. They are more common than a Toyota. The Jaguar in reality is a luxury car that welcomes you. The BMW is more just an expensive car with all the options not that luxurious. BMW is a driver car and Jaguar a classic, stylish luxury car that also happens to be a tight competitor for the BMW M5. You do get more $ wise with the Jaguar.
@M5PowerM3Power That's the point. If you compare a race car driver and a journalist in testing a 4 door sedan then the journalist would be a much more informative person for the job because he's a normal guy not a professional driver but since it's Clarkson then I could say both drivers are just as biased.
And the Jag did pretty well for a big heavy saloon in comparison to the lighter more powerful and faster M5.
@mondeost2202008 Actually, I believe the XJR is LIGHTER than an E39 ///M5, due to its aluminum body. I have driven both. The XJR gives great performance for the $, but there's nothing like a MT and NA engine.
@gingervytis I believe you have driven the previous generation XJR or the X350. The XJR in this video is the X308 from the 90's which was heavy but it was meant to compete with the S Class and 7 Series.
The new XJ can't beat the E60 M5 but it could outperform the new S Class, 7 Series and A8.
XJs will always be my favorite cars no matter what generation though my choice would be the X358 simply because of the Classic yet modern like design.
The BMW is a great car, but just lacks the luxury of the Jaguar. I had an XJR and they are great performance machines. If the XJR was nocked down to 3,600lbs to match the M5 the XJR would keep right up even with the 20 less HP. My friend always bagged on me for buying the XJR vs the M5. Once I got the 1st gear shift to shift where it should and bumped up to 400hp he never mentioned it again as i would beat up his M5 all day. Accelaration, road controle, and comfort. XJR all day.
@Penisbaby101 and think about the drawbacks of the Jag. It's big, heavy and underpowered compared to the M5 but it kept up pretty well. If it was as lighter and as powerful as the M5, It would beat it.
I love jaguars but i see them as comfortable cruisers. The M5 is the Ultimate Driving Machine and is just a way better car. Having have sat in both and driven both the jaguar feels so disconnected and numb but is so comfortable. The M5 is comfortable too but still communicates the road. I would take the M5 any day though most of these comments seem ridden with jaguar fans. No disrespect, just not my cup of tea :)
Fact is, that the difference between the worst 3 series ghetto bump and the state of the art brand new 7 series is merely a gradual one.
Whereas the difference a Jag makes is always a principal one.
And the BMW ers know it! They´ll tailgate you, overtake you whenever possible/impossible and just beg for eyecontact. Ignore them, lean back and listen to Vivaldi or Händel.
I was extremely happy with my '03 XJR when I got it. But with my "never enough" attitude, I liked it even more after I fitted a larger supercharger drive pulley on the crankshaft. (and a few more mods) Wow! A Rolls Royce interior with a formula I driveline! I can't wait to get a spare ECU and have it reprogramed to the new boost and have the speed limiting chip disabled. Never Enough!
This video is one of my favorite videos. I just got my 2002 XJR 100. There are only 500 of XJR 100 in the world and 240 in the U.S. It was unbelievable there was one in Virginia for sale!
you can see the big importance of weight distribution at 4:57. The nearly perfect balanced M5 lands sfely with all 4 wheels at the same time and the front-heavy jaguar lands with the frontwheels first and than hobbles with its tail quite unstable...
What your forgetting is they are saloon cars, so with 3-4 passengers & luggage the Jaguar will be more balanced & the BMW rear heavy, causing oversteer.
Also, how often do people jump? these arent rally cars!
This video totally changed my perception of Jaguar. It ultimately led to me purchasing a 03 XJR R1 after losing a 01 XJR in the floods in Atlanta!!! I only owned the 01 for 2 weeks!!!
Yes, they are beutiful, have panache and heritage/history. We live our lives by numbers and we live and work in boxes abd look at boxes called TV's. So it's good to have some individuality for a change. No doubt BMW are designed well but they just don't look good. First thing that u notice about a woman is how she looks. Well cars are no different :-)
Don't like all of them but that m5 is a beauty in my opinion, much better than XJR but im not saying it is - because all people different and its a matter of taste. Same with woman some like blondes while other brunnettes bla, bla, bla...
YES, the Jaguar looks individual and has so much heritage. The BMW is boring to look at as are most German cars. Boring German cars. There's more to a car than going fast. No doubt they are well engineered but they look crap
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
there's no way an auto jag with 370 hp can keep up with 6 speed manual with 405 hp maybe to sixty but then you'd be left in the dust the only thing you've got is a sleeper
2: I like sleepers very much. Ordinary (sort of) sedans, estates, coupès etc. Turned into killers. (very much like these two)
3: Allthough I'd take the XJR, I'd take the E39 M5 before any jap car any day.
4: Jeremy and Tiff just proved that the XJR is just as fast. jeremy isn't a racecar driver unlike Tiff. He is good, but not proffesional, allso unlike Tiff.
well the boys just proved that it didn't won! I'm sure it would be a second or two faster arround the Top Gear track, but I don't give a damn!!! 2 seconds, what is that??? It would still make you very, very sick, but carry you arround in great comfort when it doesn't. That is a combination BMW can't do. Jaguar can both make supercars and racingcars, but this a comfortable, luxury supersedan.
Not when its your daily driver. Maybe if you are doing 100 laps on a track, yes, but not by much. But driving home, the Jag is better and that cannot be argued
I guess it depends what you want. The M5 is a very comfortable car, you can drive hundreds of miles without so much as a single ache. The Jaguar (I have been in them trust me) is also very comfortable but for a daily driver, I would take the M5 any day. Its still comfortable, but much funner to drive with more driver feedback. Suspension may be a little stiffer but is by no means uncomfortable. Just my opinion at least.
Yah, that is very true. It depends on what you want. My dad LOVES his M5, and Loves my jag, and he says that mine is more comfortable, not saying the M5 is uncomfortable, because it really is, but its all oppinion
Yeah I'd go along with that, it would do nearly 180mph!
Also in Britain, a 1999 M5 will cost £9k, a 1999 XJR £6k, but a 1991 Lotus Carlton would be £20k at the very least. So it was a more sensible new buy, too.
I had a Carlton 3.0 manual estate that could crack 160mph, I`ve also had Senators, great cars, but derestricted both M5 & XJR will be faster, despite weighing more & being much safer.
I respect German cars, but I cant love them, which is why I buy Jaguars.
The 4.0 XJR comes with 370bhp, but with ONLY some supercharger blueprinting, intercooler flowing & a freeflow exhaust for around £1000, a genuine 470bhp is available. Bargain!
Everyones entitled to their own prefrences though!
oh yesh i want them both, why have one when you can have them both!....i take these same idealogy with woman.

The difference between the Jag and the BMW is that the Jag still looks cool and timeless while the BMW looks like an old car. Still love both of them though. :-)
MauriceDhondt 1 year ago
@MauriceDhondt Exactly the Jag stood the test of time much better. While the BMW looks pretty dated now.
JungleListSoldier 1 year ago
@JungleListSoldier - I disagree. The BMW is the more modern design, the Jag is more derivative. Both, however, are wonderful cars.

Canam7 1 year ago

Pls somebody let me know.
nobuohtsuka 1 year ago
@nobuohtsuka

I love both cars. The heart says the Jag, the head says the M5. At 1:24 my spine tingles at the M5 sounding like an aeroplane. Stunning.

Chef Luigi out.

marine420007 1 year ago
They are both PHENOMENAL cars, in their own rights. They just appeal to different buyers. Most people looking to buy an M5 are not going to consider an XJR and vice versa. And I must say that if anyone refers to either of these cars as 'crap' (particularly the Jaguar) then that person is quite stunned and needs to have their head read.
Thanks.
Ps. The Jag does NOT handle like crap.

tuberlol2 1 year ago 15
People must realize that these are two very different animals. On paper they may compete very closely, however, the overall experience is vastly different. I have driven several E39 M5s. I also have driven an XJR. The M5, of course has a manual trans. whereas the Jag, an auto. The Jag is much more quiet and sophisticated feeling. The M5 feels much sportier. Regarding looks, the BMW is awesome, but the Jag is simply classic. They are both immensely fast (and I would know ;)

superdan1875 1 year ago
It really comes down to what you want. The both are so close in all aspects. Here in the US its nice to see a Jag once in a while because everyone has a BMW. They are more common than a Toyota. The Jaguar in reality is a luxury car that welcomes you. The BMW is more just an expensive car with all the options not that luxurious. BMW is a driver car and Jaguar a classic, stylish luxury car that also happens to be a tight competitor for the BMW M5. You do get more $ wise with the Jaguar.

TheAlfameArmory 1 year ago
Tiff Needel's opinion > clarkson
anyone who argues this is pathetic, Tiff is a hugely succesful racer while clarkson is simply a journalist with a hobby. :)
M5PowerM3Power 1 year ago
@M5PowerM3Power That's the point. If you compare a race car driver and a journalist in testing a 4 door sedan then the journalist would be a much more informative person for the job because he's a normal guy not a professional driver but since it's Clarkson then I could say both drivers are just as biased.
And the Jag did pretty well for a big heavy saloon in comparison to the lighter more powerful and faster M5.
mondeost2202008 1 year ago
@mondeost2202008 Actually, I believe the XJR is LIGHTER than an E39 ///M5, due to its aluminum body. I have driven both. The XJR gives great performance for the $, but there's nothing like a MT and NA engine.
gingervytis 1 year ago
@gingervytis I believe you have driven the previous generation XJR or the X350. The XJR in this video is the X308 from the 90's which was heavy but it was meant to compete with the S Class and 7 Series.
The new XJ can't beat the E60 M5 but it could outperform the new S Class, 7 Series and A8.
XJs will always be my favorite cars no matter what generation though my choice would be the X358 simply because of the Classic yet modern like design.
mondeost2202008 1 year ago
jag owned it
bamboonigga12charlie 1 year ago 2
The BMW is a great car, but just lacks the luxury of the Jaguar. I had an XJR and they are great performance machines. If the XJR was nocked down to 3,600lbs to match the M5 the XJR would keep right up even with the 20 less HP. My friend always bagged on me for buying the XJR vs the M5. Once I got the 1st gear shift to shift where it should and bumped up to 400hp he never mentioned it again as i would beat up his M5 all day. Accelaration, road controle, and comfort. XJR all day.
Penisbaby101 1 year ago 3
@Penisbaby101
So, the stereotype is true *looks at your username*.
TheAlfameArmory 1 year ago
@Penisbaby101 and think about the drawbacks of the Jag. It's big, heavy and underpowered compared to the M5 but it kept up pretty well. If it was as lighter and as powerful as the M5, It would beat it.

I heard that on these Jags there's a trick built in 'secretly'
at 155, if you move the gearlever across the J-gate and back into D, it overrides the limiter
I have no idea if this is true, but I hope so. Either way, I'll find out one day ;)

Leezamonkey 1 year ago
I love jaguars but i see them as comfortable cruisers. The M5 is the Ultimate Driving Machine and is just a way better car. Having have sat in both and driven both the jaguar feels so disconnected and numb but is so comfortable. The M5 is comfortable too but still communicates the road. I would take the M5 any day though most of these comments seem ridden with jaguar fans. No disrespect, just not my cup of tea :)
blackXSpr 1 year ago
@blackXSpr You think an M5 communicates the road? Try an E36 or E30 ///M3.

@gingervytis I used to own an E36 M3 and all I said was the M5 (which I now own) communicates more than the Jaguar (which I have driven)

Never Enough!

you can see the big importance of weight distribution at 4:57. The nearly perfect balanced M5 lands sfely with all 4 wheels at the same time and the front-heavy jaguar lands with the frontwheels first and than hobbles with its tail quite unstable...
herbelcerbel 2 years ago
What your forgetting is they are saloon cars, so with 3-4 passengers & luggage the Jaguar will be more balanced & the BMW rear heavy, causing oversteer.
Also, how often do people jump? these arent rally cars!

Yes, they are beutiful, have panache and heritage/history. We live our lives by numbers and we live and work in boxes abd look at boxes called TV's. This comment has received too many negative votes show
there's no way an auto jag with 370 hp can keep up with 6 speed manual with 405 hp maybe to sixty but then you'd be left in the dust the only thing you've got is a sleeper
andrew190e 2 years ago
1: Both these cars are sleepers.
He is good, but not proffesional, allso unlike Tiff.
torod213 2 years ago 5
Anyway the M5 would won. Say what you say the BMW M5 is better.
diego750il 2 years ago
well the boys just proved that it didn't won! I'm sure it would be a second or two faster arround the Top Gear track, but I don't give a damn!!! 2 seconds, what is that??? It would still make you very, very sick, but carry you arround in great comfort when it doesn't. That is a combination BMW can't do. Jaguar can both make supercars and racingcars, but this a comfortable, luxury supersedan.
torod213 2 years ago 2
By 2 seconds?!?! more like 0.2 seconds ;) lol
idonlikeveg 2 years ago
Perhaps. I don't know. Too bad they never tested them on the track.
torod213 2 years ago
Not when its your daily driver. Maybe if you are doing 100 laps on a track, yes, but not by much. But driving home, the Jag is better and that cannot be argued
s54bmw 2 years ago
Ill argue it. M5 > Jag
blackXSpr 2 years ago
not for comfort. Take a ride in both. The M5 is great, my dad has one. But the Jag is better I have one
s54bmw 2 years ago 3
I guess it depends what you want. The M5 is a very comfortable car, you can drive hundreds of miles without so much as a single ache. The Jaguar (I have been in them trust me) is also very comfortable but for a daily driver, I would take the M5 any day. Its still comfortable, but much funner to drive with more driver feedback. Suspension may be a little stiffer but is by no means uncomfortable. Just my opinion at least.
blackXSpr 2 years ago
Yah, that is very true. It depends on what you want. My dad LOVES his M5, and Loves my jag, and he says that mine is more comfortable, not saying the M5 is uncomfortable, because it really is, but its all oppinion
s54bmw 2 years ago
oh and his is the same M5 as the one in the vid, and mine is a 2002. Same car basically as the one in this video
s54bmw 2 years ago
GM Lotus Omega wins them all!!
zuize92 2 years ago
Yeah I'd go along with that, it would do nearly 180mph!
Also in Britain, a 1999 M5 will cost £9k, a 1999 XJR £6k, but a 1991 Lotus Carlton would be £20k at the very least. So it was a more sensible new buy, too.
morgman43 2 years ago
I had a Carlton 3.0 manual estate that could crack 160mph, I`ve also had Senators, great cars, but derestricted both M5 & XJR will be faster, despite weighing more & being much safer.
I respect German cars, but I cant love them, which is why I buy Jaguars.
The 4.0 XJR comes with 370bhp, but with ONLY some supercharger blueprinting, intercooler flowing & a freeflow exhaust for around £1000, a genuine 470bhp is available. Bargain!
Everyones entitled to their own prefrences though!
