The dog was poking a bit at the cat's hind legs, in my experience with multiple cats, some mean and some sweet, they generally don't like their hind legs messed with. So it's only natural the kitty would start swatting. The dog seemed like he was just trying to play, or maybe he was just trying to lay down and didn't realize he wasn't annoying the cat by touching it's legs. That dog is a good sport for just letting the cat hit him, hahah.

He knew when I was having a hard time and he would stay with me more than normal. It is possible to teach cats things. In my opinion, they're not dumb at all. If anything, they think it's stupid to do tricks for our amusement so they just don't do them. =P

I'm a cat person. I think dogs smell, they drool, they bark, they're certainly not as soft and cuddly as cats. But I don't think one is better than the other. It's all personal preference.
