Again a huge thank you. These are tremendous: having them in a survey list is wonderful.
Yeah, what Caiogbarros said, LOL. Another brilliant and beautiful piece (as is the briefer No. 11 Study) seeming to come from a master who has ready fluency. It is sometimes difficult while listening to remember these were all hand-punched directly onto the piano roll. Though it is direct scoring, the spacing for the multi-temporal elements must require and amazing musical canniness and skill.
From what I heard of Nancarrow this is my favorite study. Here he achieved a perfect ballance between his major influences: complex rhythms, unusual textures and early jazz motifs (boogie woogies) and at the same time kept all in a very clear form. Truly a masterpiece.
It's like a structure that's constantly going to tip over but is ingeniously going trough emergency support structuring at precisely the right moments
I think it would be a good idea to upload study no. 40, the one with the canon in π:e rhythmic ratio. Would be very interesting for mathematics-enthusiasts as well as music fans. I don't have it so I can't upload it, where did you get those recordings?

Do I detect a little "boogie woogie" embedded in there?

I don't get it. I honestly do not get it.
I understand that technically he must have been very proficient to produce this kind of precision, but... to what end? It's not pleasant to listen to.
I'm all for substance over fluff, but if the result is this irritating, what is the point?

Hey, Furiko! Nice to see you off of TV Tropes.
Music like this is like spicy food, if you don't like it there's nothing to explain. It's not like we're hearing something totally different.
Maybe you'd like something more like Paul Lansky's notjustmoreidlechatter? There's something for everyone, we'll find something for you.
