  • oh my god, i cant believe it... finally an arcade fire song with lyrics i can actually understand when they are sung.

  • Bowie is god

  • Arcade Fire & David Bowie it's a combination! (c)

  • *Wipes tears from eyes*

  • Jeeez! I saw Bowie do this live in '72, loved it then, and seeing it now, 39 years later!, and its still as fantastic as ever and gives me goose bumps. Genius. And David still sings it with the passion and feeling that it first had. I do hope, but sadly doubt, that he'll perform live again. Such a shame, but thats life :-)

  • David Bowie is the Man. He is one of the greatest legends of Rock and Roll.

It's Arcade Fire playing with him, one of the best bands of lately and you completely forget they're on stage. All you Hear is Mr David Bowie!

  • Its David fucking Bowie

  • Is that D. Bowie's twin brother?

  • He could have sang any song, lets dance, modern love, china girl; instead he sang one of his better songs. Whatever you think of him, he has credibility.

  • ohh Win you mess these lyrics up just like me. i lovee you <33 :D

  • I'm sitting here watching this with my mouth open. Then, at 2:41, I just started crying. God, I love music.

  • I still miss Ronsons awesome guitar

  • @bpretty58 R.I.P. Mick - Moonage Daydream-----

  • ermm i see placebo's cover has 895,000+ views...something is wrong here

  • @Eggs4Eva it should have more, i know

  • @phlipphloperton not really what i meant haha

  • The emotion David Bowie had in his voice brought me to tears...this is the best version of Five Years ever!!!

  • Wow I've never seen David play the guitar on this song. :) Nice.

  • the best version of this song is still by Brian Molko!

  • @nofret26 you're right dear soulmate, he keeps it simple but powerful.. sometimes less is more and damn brian knows it very well! i like bowie and af but i think nobody can do better than my beloved sweet prince

  • @nofret26 I have to say, Brian Molko has a brilliant version, but I still think David beats him by a hair mate. :)

Much love to Brian Molko though, one of my favourite artists.

  • @nofret26 Are you Mad? How can a cover be better than the original? HE wrote this song! Who owns the crdit for that?

  • awesome...bowie...from the heart

  • 2:16 Dylan was there...

  • @ferdinandsouz BAHAHAHAHAHA TOTALLY!

  • IF you hear this version and the Old grey Whistle test You cannot really tell thats Bowie I cant right he sounds soo different I couldnt really tell if that was him.

  • oh my fckn god. this is my comment

  • if u want to see and hear an artist that has gone through tremendous changes throughout his career just flip the pages of Neil Young...While I love Bowie, Young has morphed into more genre changes than most...also consider the greats like Peter Gabrial & Paul Simon, and Roger Waters, but Bowie is truly in a class of his own in some ways. Long live David Bowie

  • I love how he channels Dylan at about 2:16 :)

  • @AindaMais Yeah, me too.... I love Bowie!

  • @Tetramastbad And the Master couldn't care less what you think about him or the great band he's playing with ;)

  • Comment removed

  • @Tetramastbad Well considering they've already released three albums which have all been hailed amongst the critcs and Bowie himself I don't think they will be forgotten that quickly. I guess you'll just have to try and tolerate them for many years to come ;)

  • Comment removed

  • @Tetramastbad Well since you've "been around long enough to know the way it works with bands like AF" I guess I've been wrong all along :) I won't be bothering you with my stupid replies anymore. You continue your pointless crusade against AF and I'll go listen to Neon Bible :) Such a great album

  • Comment removed

  • @Tetramastbad Okay, I just can't stop this fascinating conversation. I'll try to keep it civilized although you clearly have a problem to express your opinions rationally (seriously, by the language you're using I'd guess you were born in the 90's, I really doubt you've seen Bowie live in 1973). Why do you think AF albums are so bad? Is it the songwriting, their instrumental skills, the arrangements, the overall sound etc. ? What makes Low, "Heroes" and Station to Station REAL classics?

  • @Hog4n Which I by the way think they are.

  • Comment removed

  • @Tetramastbad Thank you, there's the comment I've been waiting for. While I personally don't agree I respect your opinion. Good day to you sir (or ma'm), I'll go listen to Station to Station. This time I won't have to wash my hands, eh? ;)

  • Bowie could do basically anything after Major Tom.

  • Goosebumps just like the first time I ever heard this...Arcade Fire have great taste :)

  • @janisadora funeral sounded EXACTLY like bowie so it was inevitable that they would want to collaborate with him and vice versa.

  • They sound like Bowie's best ever backing group. Can you imagine how awesome a full tour would be ? If only.

  • @dirkbogarde44 Uhm... Arcade Fire are great.

But when it comes to back Bowie, I'd rather have the old Spiders. ^^

  • Se reinventa a sí mismo. Bowie es sencillamente único y genial.

  • i'm with jimbob! Absolutely spectacular!

  • Crap bob dylan showed and said LOOKING soo FINE hahahah

  • lÒl_i_fÈel_sÓ_lõNÉlý_tòÐÃY

  • I fucking love this guy.

  • Bowie don't need Arcade Fire...alwight!!!!!

  • @ALotofWind But Bowie wanted Arcade Fire. He has cited them as his one of his favorite bands.

  • He's looking a bit like a blond Sir Paul

  • @jaycurrie "...a blond Sir Paul...", with no "Sir" attached--he declined knighthood in 2003. Makes me love him even more (as if that were possible!).

  • The black and white film in the background is called "The man with the movie camera" from Dziga Vertov from the year 1929. Well worth watching even now,

  • sounds so fresh, hard to believe this is nearly a 40 year old song, bowies performance is awesome

  • Is that Ricky Jervais doing the singing?

  • @mutetouretteshimself Isn't Ricky Jervais that really fat comedian?

  • @bugmusk6 He's not really fat. But yes, he is a comedian

  • @Tianoevanova Get outta here, troll.

  • greatest artists ever. david bowie is godly

  • I saw Bowie in Cleveland, OH, about 1971/72. He looked like Marlene Dietrich. When I saw him again about 1973/74, he was Ziggy Stardust. The Spiders were Trevor Bolder, Mick Ronson and one more name I forget. I've liked Arcade Fire since Keep the Car Running and salute the Grammy's for recognizing them. Thanx, David, for playing with them!

Some Canadian bads are cool, I've been a huge fan of Tragically Hip, too.

  • He could show them how to write a tune while he's up there. Portentous angst, pretension and emotional thrash do no not a song make. I hope they are not the new U2 - one is bad enough. Bowie on the other hand. ...How many artists have stayed so consistently good and inventive over so many years?

  • @liedream1 Making a pretentious comment accusing a bands songwriting of being pretentious. Good one.

  • Bowie reaches out and virtually makes the career of a talented young creative musical ensemble from Montreal. What a talent he has always been, and always will be.

  • Bowie looks SO NERVOUS! His voice sounds shaky... I wouldn't blame him for being nervous... This was his first performance after his heart surgery. But wow... he looks so vulnerable...

  • i would kill to see him live..

  • @lostinthemeadow

i killed brain cells 2 times to see him...

  • Okay, so you're this new band. You've got some songs you want to get recorded, and then you hear Bowie wants to sing backup on them.

After you stop shitting yourself, you gotta go play miniature golf.

  • holy shit.

  • exactly this is the reason why bowie makes my day...

  • this is fucking great

  • Bowie i love

  • arcade fire AND david bowie?! beautiful.

  • @Imdenniscampbell couldnt have said it any better. my two favorite artists

  • 33 people are 50cent fans

  • @BadBeanEntertainment Wrong extrapolation....

  • put my house up too baby, i need to see this man !

  • Wonderful, this is classic but I love the version when Brian Molko from Placebo sing this song in random TV show... it´s so emotional and sad.

  • @4ndreaCZ Yes, Brian's version is beautiful. This song has sad lyrics but I treat it as a kind of reminder, especially when I feel a bit lost or confused. Five years ,I think to myself, so let's not screw it sunshine;) and I understand the title metaphorically, it just means for me that the days are counted. It's just a song but it has made me feel better a few times:)

  • @oscarcanterbury spot on, beck's seachange is amazing

  • @oscarcanterbury Sea Changes... great record

  • @oscarcanterbury i wouldn't dare to say one word against DB but saying that The Beatles never changed their sound is just hilarious. I won't make any further comment just pls go and LISTEN to The Beatles.

Hope for your sake you are not yet 20 years old otherwise think before writing...

  • @lamane I don't think i made myself clear. The point i was trying to make was that Bowie, The Beatles and Radiohead were all great bands that were able to change their sound and succeed. And no i'm not 20. I like to think i know a thing or two about music.

  • @lamane I don't think i made myself clear. The point i was trying to make was that Bowie, The Beatles and Radiohead were all great bands that were able to change their sound and succeed. And no i'm not 20. I like to think i know a thing or two about music. I'm going to see Arcade Fire play London'd Hyde Park in June. Can't wait!

  • @lamane Hahahah! Well said.

  • @oscarcanterbury You should check out the Wild Beasts if you want to see a really talented band that takes risks!

  • @oscarcanterbury The Beatles sticking to the same style? You could not be more wrong. They bought the sound of India among many other things... listen to their Revolution9 and try to find anything similar in their previous work,. In fact they have changed the most times compared to any other influential band. From pure pop, through rock, India, psychedelic music, movie soundtracks with orchestra... Name one band that experimented that much and in the peak of popularity...

  • hippies

  • i did this and wake up in the same week at a music camp, entirely coincidentally. i freaked out when i found out about this performance.

  • The vocal of Bowie's is just perect circa 72. Amazing.

  • @oscarcanterbury I agree. It's amazing how well he captures the original sound--he is such a fantastic performer and vocalist. If he doesn't get back in the studio soon, I'm going to have an emotional breakdown. Bowie is the artist who has influence me most in my beliefs about life and my ideas about art. I have unbelievable respect for him.

  • i usually watch andlisten to bowies older stuff. dont get me wrong here i love him but he is not as good as he use to be

  • He pretty much is a member of Arcade Fire, or performs like it anyway. Wow. SOOOOOOOO good.

  • wish he still looked like a human being, other than that splendid

  • @nicklessz Come on, since when has Bowie looked like a human being? It's David fucking Bowie he's an alien, everyone knows that, that's why he's so amazingly good.

  • they should do Starman, they could do baroque pop version of it

  • Wonderful. Period.

  • I WANT TO CRY, my two favourite musicians. I am crying!

  • arcade bowie :D

  • Shivers :0

  • BOWIE SAID 'FUCK THATS ALL WE GOT AT 3MIN 13

  • power music! i love david-arcade! bkD

  • @bonecakabukidoll Which is your favourite album by David Arcade?

  • man that guy can sing

  • Bowie old king, but he is not old!!!

  • We are Blessed!!

  • AMAAzing!

  • Absolutely bloody amazing! David Bowie proves he's still a sexy beast. Arcade Fire are a fantastic backing band. I would love to see them tour!

  • Did anybody else notice how he did a Dylanlike voice at 02:17 when he said "looking so fine!" Suppose that's who he was referring to when he sings "Don't think you knew you were in this song?"

Also: two of the times he's supposed to say "We got five years, my brain hurts a lot" it sounds like he's saying "We got five years, to bring her to life."

But he can do whatever he likes cuz he's The Bowie!

  • @gregorybrian Yeah, it really seems he sings "to bring her to life", but when I put headphones on my computer and greatly increase the volume, I could hear him singing "my brain hurts a lot" in a tired way....Probably his breath gave this strange effect. And about Dylan, I loved the way he imitated him. But I think that when Bowie wrote "don't think you knew you were in this song" he was addressing to us, the listeners.

  • One of Bowie (many) great great tracks, awesome seeing him perform this with the brilliant AF. Goose bumps allover. Bowie gives it his original 70s treatment.

  • One of Bowie's best songs paired with one of the best bands in the world today: Arcade Fire from Montreal--I love you.

  • oh my god, what I would've given to have been there!

Five Years is one of my favorite songs of all time and the Arcade Fire is an amazing band as well, I think the only way they could've topped this performance is if they'd done "Heroes" as well. Absolutely brilliant.

  • anyone else get chills when they first say "we got 5 years!"

  • Unfortunately, Bowie (pronounced Bow-aye) was mincorrect about the world ending in five years unless he meant five years from now. Bowie likes to predict the future but he won't look at the past not even in anger, I am not so sure why he does this maybe there are no mirrors in the past

  • would it just be fantastic if david showed up @ their live youtube stream show in NY

    aug 5

  • Class act !!! First time i have ever heard this tune .Original and by the way who really gives a fuck what the man looks like.

  • @kerkiraz First time you have heard it? Thanks for sharing your cherry with us. Do yourself a favour and Youtube Placebo's cover of it. A VERRRY nice acoustic version.

  • @kerkiraz I really recommend that you YouTube "Bowie Five Years" and see several versions of the song Bowie's done through the years. The guy's ever-changing in both his appearance and his interpretation of the same songs. 70s, 80s, 90s, today - every version sounds so different - and always amazing.

    Lovely song.

  • Bowie looks very shiny. I saw his last gig prior to this; isle of wight festival 2004. He had a heart attack a few days afterwards and has not toured since. He looks very different 2 years later... facial surgery ? Something unfamiliar about him here.

  • @mcflyfarm ILook back through the years and see the never ending change, without any surgery !

  • I cannot find one thing wrong with David Bowie. He is *THE* coolest man alive today. And what a backing band he's got or this performance.

  • @rudowakening spot on comment could not agree more

  • Written in 1972. Bowie was way ahead of his time, biggest pioneer in the history of music.

  • over 35 years he wrote this song and still puts his soul into the show it brings me to tears when i see bowie perform its amazing

  • @rehpotsirc

It is a song that simply gets to you, to your bones to your blood.. what a surprise... more then 5 years stuck on MY eyes..

  • @rehpotsirc Bowie's a big fan of this band. I think the fact that he's playing with them is fueling his enthusiasm. I mean that in no disrespect to the thin white duke, I can just imagine though that playing the same song for so long might make it seem stale lol.

  • another masterpiece from bowie, love the lyrics, I cannot find the words to explain myself, the way this song makes me feel

  • On stage with David Bowie...damn.

  • Christ he's still awesome.

I swear to god if he goes on tour again I'm going to sell my house to buy a ticket.

Only he and Bruce Springsteen would make me do that.

  • Comment removed

  • @jimbobjimminy I'll sell my body to see Bowie live, seeing as it would be the only thing left, having already sold everything else including my house and car.

  • @jimbobjimminy - seen him 8 times - 1972 -1989 - sell sell sell.

  • @jimbobjimminy lol...no shit, totally hear ya same here 8)

  • @jimbobjimminy He and Bruce Springsteen are both fans of Arcade Fire and have both performed with them. Arcade Fire happens to be fans of theirs and has performed some of David and Bruce's songs.

  • @pytko3 I know? I love all of Bowie, Bruce and AF. AF are the best modern band in the world.

  • @jimbobjimminy You said it!

  • @jimbobjimminy agreed! you have excellent taste!!! I saw Bowie in 2003, truly great experience, still yet to see springsteen though I figure I'm not doing much with my soul so I may just have to sell it!!! :)

  • David+Bowie=David Bowie+genius=David Bowie is a genius

  • aww man,this is just amazing <3

  • he doesn't fit in right david is way smaller then the people from arcade fire XD

  • i would like a duel cover of warszawa, thanks :)

  • als ich jung war war ich einmal unglücklich wegen einer unglücklichen liebe aber das war ja schön und ein glück

  • Bowie is god.

  • I had seen that they had played Wake Up together but then I just found this today. I was so excited and it was so worth it! Thank you for posting this!

  • brividiii

  • What a line: "My brain hurt like a warehouse, It had no room to spare."

and: "It was cold and it rained, so I felt like an actor."

Bowie is a true genuis. <3

  • that would be amazing but they could only lose.the expectation would be too much.

  • I always said that they have a Bowie influence. and for him to play with them....They must be honoured

  • David must feel SO proud to get to play with the Arcade Fire.

    ...

    :p

  • @VoiceofCthulhu Sure he is, but i think you should turn it around. Bowie as been rockhistory since 1969, they should be proud!

  • @12345Alex It's called sarcasm.

  • Bowie and Arcade Fire are a great collaboration- this is one of those anthems you want to get up and march around the coffee table to...

  • i gotta cover of this great song that i do not pretend to do justice to but i'd love your opinion and not mine. much love, amor, y paz

  • Comment removed

  • That was the best possible version of this song. Wow.

  • I like this better than the studio version

  • Too fast, lost all of the dynamics.

  • bloody marvellous!

  • This is a very good combination. One of the best groups today and perhaps the most stunning solo-artist in the world together. And theyre performing a classic. Doesn't get any better.

  • Just... Too good man... Too good...long live Bowie. Also arcade fire have continued to astound me for the 2years I've followed them. I hope they keep up the good work

  • i would have went for bowie even if it was a arcade fire concert

  • arcade fire are toooo amazing but with bowie its so much more!!

  • The lyrics are so fucking beautiful.

  • David has not retired...Still very active with discovering and helping new bands etc...63 still active and still the sexiest man on the earth (in my eyes...)...x...

  • bowie is one the best in my opinion.
