  • A true lyric soprano with a little bit of coloratura facility and a littlebit of dramatic power. Nice try but she couldn't ornament the coda with enough variety to be interesting. However, she always had a lovely sound.

  • "La Sonnambula", just one L :-D

  • Given that I am in my 70's and have cataracts,my bad spelling is the least of my worries.

Why oh why must people get so personal on YouTube?

  • I admire and have always admired Ctrubas. She was the greatest Mimi & Vilotta I have ever seen.

Sadly though, one thing she was not is a coloratura soprano, and this clip is painful.

Why can't singers keep to their fach.In case you are woncdering I DID hear her sing this at Covent Garden and it just wasn't right for her voice.

  • @MrSwifts31 yes, you admire her so much that you are unable to write properly her name and her roles... cOtrubas, viOLEtta, mimì

    Compliments...

  • Ah Jeez..you gotta love her for bringing it home like that, with all the bumps and turns on the road before, she made it eventually, and with panache!

  • I have always liked the sound of this woman's voice.. and I still do. This however sounds like she is running out of breathe in the whole piece.

  • @kgarmaker123 She does not, You are running out of appreciating her normal breathing.

  • credo che la seconda parte dovrebbe essere piu allegra :) comunque è bravissima ( non si sentono mica i fiati asmatici e i sovracuti o meglio dire strilli della Gruberova)brava ileana

  • OK - Round 1 of the Cabaletta was not so hot, but her second attempt nailed it. Yeah - she's not a coloratura, but it's a lovely lyric voice with nice big high notes. To my ear - it sounded like the conductor was just a bit fast for her - but still not bad and it's nice to hear this sung by such a gorgeous voice.

  • eeeek!!!

  • Très bien, excellent dans la première partie, elle laisse rêver, par contre vers la fin, c'est moins fluide, je trouve... bravo !

  • She is good despite the slow 1st part - Callas is the best in that part. But Eleana did well in the caballeta - there are not many singers now who can touch this aria now adays. Her husband is conducting - he is also her trainer.

  • Wait a minute, why are we listening to a ppp middle F from the first violin from 3:30 to 4:00? She should do that cadenza alone!

  • It would have been nice had she sang all the notes. I think this aria was beyond her powers. The gown gets an A+.

  • I adore her, but this was ill-advised, to say the least. Some of her coloratura roles work quite well, IMO ... I think she is charming in L'Elisir d'Amore, but that is a completely different type of singing than Bellini demands.

  • Cotrubas was undoubtedly one of the greatest Lyrico~Spinto sopranos of the 20th Century, but certainly no coloratura(as proved here).I saw her do this at Covent Garden and it was painful(and late in her career too).I would love to know WHO persuaded her to attempt it.

I still love her in other roles though.

  • You are correct, and I was puzzled as to why she continued to go for Ebs that were clearly not really in the voice. I once had a conversation with a Asian soprano that was a friend of

Cotrubas, and told her that I didn't think Ileana should be singing coloratura roles. Cotrubas was top caliber lyric/spinto, and should have stuck with that.

  • uhmm..her voice sounds light lyric to me. Very sweet. Spintos usually have a much bigger sound

  • Great Eb (the first one)!

  • I miss Cotrubas, but this was not her forte. She cannot really sustain the Bellini cantabile and the cabaletta is for virtuosity. She possessed a tender, interpretive sound, but she was not virtuosic.

  • True True. You said it extremely well.

  • very beautiful song. well done!

  • QUE DIOSAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lo que es tener una tecnica impecable, pues no es una gran voz y sin embargo brilla como un diamante puro!

  • This singer's priority is to producte a beautiful, touching sound at all times - full success there. No comment on the fioritura in the cabaletta.

  • "No comment on the fioritura..." Hahahahaha...we know where you're going...I second your "no comment"

  • Very sweet in the aria, but pretty rock in the cabaletta. Good try for a nice lady, but big problems in the lower regions -- very bumpy getting into and out of it and the register breaks.

  • Very nice! In almost everything I have ever heard from this artist there is something special. There is always a charm to her singing that is so enjoyable. Thanks for posting.

  • Thank you Very Much for posting this Video! This is great!

I have always loved Cotrubas! She does something to me. Not many singers sing from the heart like this. I can only think of a handfull besides her. Her voice is so nice here! She could always sing what she wanted, and get the point across with so much heart and feeling!

    Thanks again!

    Brent
