This movie sucked. It is a shame that all we have left for quality animated films now days is Pixar. I remember when there were so many fantastic animated movies coming out, but those days are long, LONG, gone.
Even if you didn't like this movie, which is perfectly fine, there are many other animated movies that have given us Pixar-quality films. Even if they aren't your cup of tea, they're still substantially good. After all, there's a difference between a good movie and a movie you enjoy. I personally liked this movie because of the fact it had both a physical and psychological plot. It wasn't a "safe" film, and took many risks. It was unique in itself, so it stood out to me.
when they release to blue-ray and dvd, they should have the acting on stage part as a special feature! .... i agree with @defineGeek .... id almost rather watch that!!
to elaborate, screen and stage actors are trained to draw from their enviornment and the other actors for their performance, whereas voice actors basically go entirely from imagination and can do it just as well in a booth. The two disciplines are more different than most people realize and hardly any actor is equally good at one as the other.
LOL why not hire professional voice actors instead of movie stars? Not only do they not need choreography to get emotions out but the studio would be cutting back on the really unnecessary stage they've set up.
@Shevan08 'The Little Mermaid' was made in 89. Since then everything changed, there is a lot more money in animation bussines and they don't leave anything to case. Big movie stars in cartoons are common thing these days and certainly one of the ways how movie marketing works. For example I think that 'Rango' will be great because of Verbinski insisting on actors acting while they are lending their voices to cartoon characters! Much more entertaining then simply hiring prof. voice actors!
One of the stars I think for The Little Mermaid was veteran actor Kenneth Mars who provided the voice of King Triton. You might also remember him as the retired nazi Franz Liebkind in Mel Brooks' The Producers starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder.
@Shevan08 Billy West (Stimpy, Fry from Futurama, the Cheerios bee) did a whole interview talking about the trend of Hollywood using screen actors for voice, well worth a read if you're interested in the topic, linked from his wiki page.
And yes, the dedicated voice people like West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress Macneill etc. will do a better job every time, (And without using a stage, which IS for the benefit of the actors as well as animators) but the studio can't exactly put them on the marquee.
the choice to not do MoCap reminds of classic animation. "Lion King" comes to mind when the animators brought in live animals and drew there motions purely based on vision. +plus+ the actors, i believe, are more comfortable acting in ACTUAL clothes vs. a one piece tights with balls on them!... the mind wonders...
@DefineGeek i bet that on the dvd that there will be a special feature where they show the whole movie nehind the scenes like the emotional acting or whatever
@DefineGeek Uh.... this footage is pretty cool but the movie itself is pretty F'CKIN amazing! And seeing the things in the movie would be a lot better than just seeing them on the sound stage.
I absolutely love the part at 0:42 − 0:45! I'd love to see the whole thing!
