Here are some simple instructions to how to build a house for one of natures best pollinators. The mason bee. A gentle, solitary insect that is a better pollinator then a honey bee.
I just ordered a hive and a package of bees. it is my first how long do you have to feed them Sugar water? Where can you purchase the can of Sugar water. Thanks for your time
@bottomgunner You can make sugar water yourself with a 1:1 ratio (e.g. 6 cups of water and 5 pounds of sugar.) You will need to feed the bees this soulution until lots of flowers are blooming.
Hives arived today..Bees on the 22nd.. I cannot wait. Thanks for this awesome video.. I'll probably watch it at least a couple dozen times before I pick up my girls.
Thanks, man! What a great video. Thank you for your generosity, which I've found so often since starting my work with bees. While I was out of town today, my husband picked up my Californian bees and I'll be putting them in their hive tomorrow. The thought of them in their little cage in the cool dark underneath my house makes me smile, and this video helps me prepare. :) I'm so excited to meet them and get started!
Great video. I am starting my first bee hive. Your were most helpful and encouraging. I have the hive. The local beekeepers will be helping me get the bees.
Great video. I am starting my first bee hive. Your were most helpful and encouraging. I have the hive. The local beekeepers will be helping me get the bees.
Beekeepers have a love for nature and are always willing to help other beekeepers. It is a very rewarding hobby. Thanks for this great video. I captured my first swarm without any protection and installed it in an empty hive. It was the first swarm I had ever seen. Thanks again.
I received my two packages of bees from Georgia this morning. This is my first time beekeeping. Your going without the suit of armor helped ease my mind. I did the same and wasn't stung. I did get a little nervous when I too dropped the queen and had to stick my hand into about 9,500 bees to retrieve her. Many thanks for this great video. Also like your comment about how to make a bee feeder...clever and easy.
I'm somebody else fascinated by beekeeping but terrified of bees (thankfully, not allergic!). When you shook out the box after installing the queen, the volume of the buzzing of the freed bees was extremely creepy, but your calm delivery of the instructions and confident manner of handling the bees and equipment was very reassuring. Thank you for posting that video!
This was a great video. After watching several on this topic this is clearly one of the most informative and easy to follow. The one thing I am not sure about was the feeder can that was used. It would seem to me that it would drip itself dry instead of the bees feeding from it.
I am interesed in that feeder as well. It looks to me like a Store bought clean paint can. I know that the inner pressure (not sure of the tech term) keeps the syrup from running out.
Thank you for this excellent video. I am installing mine tomorrow. I had a hive last year, but like many, lost them all this winter! Hope second time will work out better.
Very interesting video. I have been reading lots of stories about mass die offs of the honey bees and have been trying to plant more native plants to encourage honeybees to come around.
As someone who has no interest in raising bees, would it be advisable to purchase a bee package and let them go wild in a protected part of your yard? I live in San Francisco.
What can we as every day people do to encourage healthy bees in our areas?
Here locally, for brand new folks that aren't quite confident around bees yet, we have them spray the bees with some sugar syrup while they're still in the package. This seems to keep them from flying around so much while you're installing them, and makes the new folks a little less nervous.
I use new paint cans purchased at any paint store. Use a finish nail, poke 6-8 holes. Put the cover on tight and when inverted, a vaccum is created and syrup will not leak. Test before leaving the can on the bees.
I've helped make package bees but never installed them in hives. For myself I just made two or three small new hives from my original hives. Worked great for me.
wow thats great!Did any of the Bees sting you? I have always wanted to be a BEE keeper, however Im allergic to the sting, and being in Texas always worried about the Killer Bees from Africa. Are you havin any problems with your Bees? I ask because I have heard in the news about some problems and then went hunting for info on the problem of the missing and or dieing Bees. Its very sad that many are havin this problem. thanks and great work!
Thank you, I seldom get stung installing a package. We do not have a problem with Africanized bees in New England. Hopefully we never will. Our problems are getting the bees through tough winters and dealing with mites and diseases. I just got back from Georgia with 400 packages to replace winter losses and start new beekeepers with bees.
Thanks for you comment. The solution for sugar is 1 part water and one part sugar by volume in the spring. In the fall it is 2 parts sugar one part water.
im a beginner beekeeper and i just got a 3 framed(1 comb and 2 food frame)at this moment it is summer here in my country and im worried that my bees would die whats the best thing that i will do?
One frame of brood is not a lot. Make sure you feed sugar water. This will stimulate the queen to continue to lay eggs. What country are you from and what is the weather?
THank you very much. I am young and need all the information I can get about beekeeping before I buy the bees in late january
