While the song's meaning is found in a north Indian language, this tune was appropriate not just for that reason. This tune is one of the most important Indian ragas, called Bhairavi (kind of a scale, but with rules. this particular one uses 12 notes, and has various rules for ascent and descent). It's played in South Asia, and under various names, upto Arabia. It's been played in various similar forms for at least 1500 years, even in medieval Europe. So yeah, it truly represents humanity.
I really hate how people rag on other cutures music. What else would you rather send? personally id rather send traditional, classical, and emotional music from all cultures rather than anything produced electronically. we arent showing off our nations and society in the western world with this record, we're showing off the human race as a whole. Thats why Sagan chose these kinds of songs predominantly, rather than what one western person calls good.
I was abducted by aliens. They probed my butt and scanned my brain but didnt find much. Except they keep asking me what pilsner means. They said that Jaat and Willie sent them here. I have two of them livining in my basement. I'm cooking up some fried chicken and a warm apple pie. I hope they like it.
I find it intriguing how this one rendition of the bhairava raaga which although beautiful but actually just one amongst millions, is now the one part of Indian culture which might just outlive the human race.
Are you versed in Indian classcal music? Because this a subject I've been meaning to look into, at least a little, for quite some time; but I hardly know where to start.
If you are knowledgeable, and can spare a moment, any advice you could offer on beginnings and sources would be well appreciated.
Robert E. Brown, the American ethnomusicologist selected the best music of the world for inclusion in the Voyager Golden Record, the song by Kesarbai Kerkar 'Jaat Kahan Ho (where are you going lonely traveller). Her music is now the only music of India that is past Pluto and going into outer space.
From what I've read, neither of the Voyager spacecraft will reach another planetary system for about...40,000 years. I can't say that this will be a very good representation of what's here by that time but...it's still a nice though I guess.

I am fed up with finding more and more samples of music that ain't bluegrass, or country or Sousa marches on a spacecraft that makes of itself pretty large claims, that it is representing the human race. We Americans are the best in the world and I want E.T. to know that.
Give me Sousa or give me death. The NASA industrial complex was not just built to enable other nations to send off their greetings into space. If they are that up-to-date why don't they do it, they and their communist governments?
I want all citizens of the cosmos, cosmopolitans to know that America is the greatest nation in the cosmos. If they dispute that fact, we should not exclude sending Marines off to other planets.
Come on, Stephen Hawking said so himself: If there is ETI, it has not to be friendly now does it.
If they do question the cosmic leader position of the United States, yes, it may be wise to invade them and their countries, if they have countries. Let them know who's boss.
It seems that if they find this record and come to us from many, many lightyears away and we have yet to send humans outside of our solar system, that our armies would be much like the Aztecs facing down the Conquestadors.
@hyperseauton way to disgrace us you idiot. All the different music of the different cultures is what makes this record and the people of this earth so great that words cannot describe it. I'm an American and listing to this song was beautiful, Im so happy its on this record

Thank you for posting this song and for the people involved in getting this added to the golden record. The music is soulful.

NASA had to scramble all around the US and kept calling India to find this song within 3 days. Finally the found it in an Indian restaurent in USA.

Hearing @NPR today found that someone at the top in NASA loved and wanted this song to be added.

@sirredthebum The conquistadors conquered by allying with some natives against others and getting them to fight each other, keep that in mind.

@jgoemat I was meaning more of the technology gap but if you bring it up, they certainly could play one power off of another (say the US v. the PRC).
