With regard to the the Qur'anic verses you've quoted, you must realize that you have taken these verses out of their historical context. When you decontextualize verses like this it is very easy to misunderstand them. We know that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had a christian friend- Waraqa- and the Qur'an talks in respectful terms about the People of the Book.

Sufism does not teach shirk. Imam al-Ghazali was a sufi, as were Ibn Arabi and many other great scholars. Do you think you know more that Imam al-Ghazali who was the renewer of his age and the hujjat al-islam? You have to make a distinction between different kinds of sufism- the great classical sufism is the science of 'ihsan', spiritual excellence.

When you decontextualize verses like this it is very easy to misunderstand them. You have to make a distinction between different kinds of sufism- the great classical sufism is the science of 'ihsan', spiritual excellence.

Muhammad answers that Islam has three dimensions: islam (surrender, the outer, bodily dimension); iman (faith, the intellectual dimension); and ihsan (excellence, the spiritual dimension). All three dimensions comprise Islam. First, islam = shari'ah; iman = kalam; ihsan = sufism/tasawwuf. So, yes, the Prophet has mentioned it.

Quran cleary states that the people of the book are KUFFAR! After the coming of Prophet Muhammad SAW their is no other way it is incumbent to follow him and leave everything else, Allah says that no religion will be accepted accept Islam, and the law that Jesus was to enforce was the law or Musa and we consider them to be Muslims and Islam because at that time it was the pure mesage from Allah which Is Islam....reread the Quran it is clear and not confusing.....

@chekdamize7 I repeat: all the scholars maintain that "People of the Book" is a respectful term. This is why they were protected under Islamic law (providing they paid certain taxes).
Again you are confusing Islam and islam. Of course, the only religion accepted by Allah is submission; but one does not have to be a Muslim to submit to God. There are other ways! Do you really think that people (kuffar, as you say) who have never heard of Islam but who worship God are going to hell? Stupid!

Ok, you can argue that the Christians don't believe in the oneness of God because of trinitarianism, but when properly understood the doctrine of the trinity does not deny the oneness of God. Una essentia, tres persona. One divine essence, three persons. But "person" does not mean separate consciousness; it does not mean three gods!

This is why the ulema write substantial commentaries on the Qur'an because it isn't clear and not confusing! Do you speak Arabic? Do you understand Arabic grammar to a high level? @chekdamize7 Fundamentalists like you want to move from text (Qur'an) to application without interpretation. Well, I'm afraid you just can't do this! Whenever you read a text you are already in the act of interpretation. For instance, if I were to put 100 people in 100 different rooms and ask them to read the Qur'an from cover to cover, they would all emerge with different interpretations of the text. It is not simple! This is why we need scholars like Al Ghazali to help us understand.

@chekdamize7 Your mistake is to assume that submission (islam) is limited to belonging to the religion brought by Muhammad (pbuh): Islam with a capital 'I'. There was no Islam (that is, the religion of Muhammad) before the 6th century; but there has always been islam (that is, submission to the divine). Abraham, Moses and Jesus were not Muslims because they did not subscribe to the religion of Muhammad (how could they?) but they were muslims in the sense of submitting to the divine.

Your mistake is to assume that the word "muslim" is limited to meaning someone who belongs to the religion of Islam, but of course in the Qur'anic vocabulary it refers to anyone who is in a attitude of submission to God. You wouldn't deny that Isa (Jesus) submitted to God, would you? Well, he was a practicing Jew, not a "muslim" in the limited sense you've given to that word.

It is a well known fact that Jesus was not a Jew like the Jews of today. Every Prophet was a Muslim, the confusion is because of the term children of Israel, and being that Judah was one of the tribes of the Children of Israel, the names were mistaken. @bayreuth79 These Ayat were revealed in Mecca and were obviously talking about those christians and Jews between the time of Jesus and Muhammad when there was no guidance. But after the Quran was fully revealed the guidance was completed so those who hear the message of Islam and reject will be in hell. Only those christians and Jews that die in a state of ignorance about Islam we can say might be saved, but that would depend on their sins and it is on Allah.....

Because the prophet Muhammad said that anybody who hears about me and the message that he was sent with and dies while rejecting it will be in hellfire. @bayreuth79 This form of christianity that exists today is not the christianity that Allah speaks of because they are committing shirk, the christianity that allah is speaking of is those that follow monotheism, which is a minority in modern christianity. Modern Christianity would be the one that was infiltrated by paganism. This includes all those who believe in Jesus being the son of God, a trinity, or Jesus being ur savior. Those who do not believe this are the ones that Allah is speaking of.

Secondly the explanation that I gave u is from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the most trusted Tafsir in the world and the most original. The explanation is given the famous Sahabi Abdullah Ibn Abbas, so ur are wrong again.....

@mujahidfisabillilah1 You have failed to contextualize the verse. Tafsir al-Jalalayn regarding 3:85: "The following was revealed regarding those who apostatized and became disbelievers". Therefore, this verse refers to apostates, not to non-muslims generally speaking.

@bayreuth79 On top of this Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation and explanation have been rejected by many scholars because of his putting in his own opinions. Allah is merciful but he is also severe in punishment and quick in holding accountable. Allah says plenty of times in the Quran that the majority of people will go to hell, because they are ungrateful, and remeber that allah punished all of Egypt because of one person's corruption, and he punished the people of Saleh bcuz of 9 people....

This is a more accurate translation of the passage in question. The Qur'an itself says that the People of the Book "are not all the same": meaning that some of these people are good people. If they are good people then clearly they are pleasing to God in some way.
