The coaches instructed the players to give J-Mac the ball and give him lots of time to shoot and not to defend them. Notice how the camera footage is in fast-forward because they don't want the viewer to see how slow they are moving and how much time J-Mac had to set up each shot.

I know people that have seen this 3 or 4 times and still get all choked up an cry at the end. I showed this in a class tonight when i was talking about mainstreaming students in high schools and several of them cried.

I first hear this story from my science teacher in 6th grade. She showed me the video because I also have autism. My grandma also showed me this. I became a basketball player in 7th grade because of this story.
The real hero of this video is the coach that gave a young man the opportunity to display his greatness! We need many more like him in our schools. He encouraged the young man at each step of the way and did not remove him from the game--even after he missed twice! As a professor in special education I am always a little leary when a student with a disability is highlighted for their "participation" in school sports. It's often gratuitous...a feel good for others, but this guy is an athlete...he was on fire. Well done Jason!

The problem with this story, is that it is like a commercial. They want you to believe one thing, when really it is another thing. Jason made those shots because of the lack of defence and effort from the other team. People think that Jason is so great, but ask yourself. Can you make a few jump shots undefended? Especially, when you have spent and wasted years of your life and energy on something that has no true value for American society.

Keep in mind that the other team was instructed by their coach not to defend this kid. They laid off of him and gave him time and open shots. In person this kid is really rude and obnoxious. All he did during his childhood was practice shooting baskets instead of learning manners, math, or anything else important. I think this story is very misguided and glorifies the wrong things.

The coolest part of this story is the fact that the crowd stood and cheered for him before he even had his hands on the ball. As soon as he got in the game, they went nuts. That, alone, is telling about what kind of support this kid has had and how much he deserved that kind of attention.

The real hero of this video is the coach that gave a young man the opportunity to display his greatness! We need many more like him in our schools. He encouraged the young man at each step of the way and did not remove him from the game--even after he missed twice! First, the school embraced him as a student, and as a vital, non-playing part of the team. Second, he was given the chance to play, all he ever wanted. Third, the other team showed great decency by not playing hardball. Fourth, the entire crowd - on both sides - was on his side. Fifth, its a positive moment for us all.

Also he's not really that disabled, he has poor social skills and a slight speech impediment, these issues shouldn't really have any effect on someone who is shooting a basketball unguarded after spending hours practicing, it would be more impressive if the kid learned how to read music or learned some manners or learned how to bake, or something more productive in life than shooting baskets undefended, think about it.
