I think what happened to him is ridiculous. As for the rest of the arguments, a real change requires a change in drug culture, not law. Have a look at the Dutch system. All the Dutch kids know the score and most will try weed at least once. Eventually common sense kicks in and anyone that kept on smoking will either move on or find a happy equilibrium with their life. Whatever the cause, not everyone can be a high flyer, who would dance in our strip clubs?
Even smoking just once a week will kill the drive and ambition in most people because weed has a cumulative effect on the system and stays there longer than other substances.
As far as addiction: Just as there are millions of humans like me that can drink with no problem or concern of ever being an alcoholic, I know there are millions where just a tiny bit of alcohol is poison in their bodies. The same problem exists for some with pot but in a much more subtle way.

The people who have no motivation had no motivation to begin with. Instead of blaming it on themselves its easier for them to blame it on Marijuana. As a former pot smoker and Libertarian; for every "highly successful" individual that smokes pot, there will always be a hundred that can hardly get out of the bed in their parents basement in the morning. Life throws enough obstacles in our way as it is to be ingesting something that makes passive. Objective scientific studies will tell you that weed makes a person apathetic. Makes a depressed person more depressed, and messes with our rem sleep cycles.
If you do anything in moderation (except for the hard drugs) you will be fine, as is the case with marijuana. Using it once a week or something like that won't harm you at all. As long as you are responsible and don't let it take over your life and make it become your goal, you'll be fine. Also, many people who say it is addictive use it as an excuse to smoke more, because weed has pretty much no addictive property. I even heard in a study that THC kills tumors and actually helps fight cancer.

Nothing is excessive, since excessive is subjective. This guy was sentenced under the laws of his state, it was up to him to educate himself about the laws and know the dangers.
Of course it is, to a degree, at the Judge's discretion the guy should have known he was risking jail time if he got caught.

Nothing is excessive, since excessive is subjective. This guy was sentenced under the laws of his state, it was up to him to educate himself about the laws and know the dangers.
Of course it is, to a degree, at the Judge's discretion the guy should have known he was risking jail time if he got caught.

i got arrested at a white stripes concert for tokin some dank and they tried to get me with distribution because it was in two bags but do you expect me to mix my nug? fuck no! the cops ended up not bringing the weed or bubbler to my third fucking court date for the same offense so i walked. i lucked the hell out. i really feel bad for this kid that horrible. he must want to die. but the prosecutor and the undercover cop dont care, bullshit

LMAO Twenty dollars for a joint? Than again, prices very. When I lived in Cleveland, it was $5 for "a blunts worth", and about $90-$125 for an ounce of half-decent weed. Now here in Erie, it's $150-$200, AND THAT'S IN THE GHETTO HERE! I'll bet in the suburbs it's 400 fuckin bucks or some rediculous shit. In Cleveland, even the suburban rich kids wouldn't pay that much! In Miami, on the other hand, I've heard of people getting it $20 an ounce, here that would get you an eigth.

i got arrested this last December in a "drug free zone". I got a $750 fine, a $5000 bond, 18 months of probation, and spent a night in jail for about 1.6 grams of some very nice weed. I didnt know i was in a drug free zone. Fuck marijuana laws...
