I can hardlly wait, I'm buying one on Sat and it's in great shape.I already reload for a marlin lever 45-70 som making the switch to BP wont be a problem. Looks like alot of fun. Thanks for sharing.
these are all handloads, i bought the brass from buffalo arms, bought the mould from lyman, and the reloading dies from rcbs. no off the shelf 45-70 is safe for the old trapdoors, even the ones that say they are i have found the pressures and velocities far in excess of what the gun can safely handle.
@Bruceman10 I was led to believe that the Remington .45-70 Gov't loads were safe, as they were specifically loaded for the old trapdoors. Am I mistaken, and in danger of blowing it and/or myself up?
@reno145 i wouldnt shoot any off the shelf remington in it regardless or what they say. Remington loads a copper jacketed bullet and it will just accelerate the wear on the bore. these older gun are made out of softer metal that modern guns. as a rule, if a gun wasnt designed to shoot smokeless, i dont shoot smokeless out of it. I have tried many times, and i always get better results with real black powder.
@captainbadd it never jams, the problem was in the early use of the 1873 when they cartridges were made of copper and would expand and get stuck in the breech. with the use of brass the problem was resolved. i have fired at least 800 rounds, if not closer to 1,000 with no problems at all.
I have shot smokeless in mine and it is alright. There are only certain powders that you want to use though or it will blow up but 3031 can be used and there are a few others. If you are interested let me know and I will send you the type of powder max powder charges that you can use
Ya that book will tell you how to get the most out of your rifle. Lee sells a mold that closely replicates the original 405 grain hollow base bullet for the 73 rifle. The hollow base will expand when fired and seal the bore and engage the rifling. The alloy must consist of 20 parts PURE lead and one part tin. I have an 84 rifle and the sights on it are calibrated for the 500 grain bullet. The book also will tell you to drill out the primer flash hole with a # 41 drill bit and use mag primers
75 grains man that must have some stiff recoil!! I shoot 70 in mine and I thought that was enough. What kind of bullet are you using? Have you read the 45/70 Springfield book by Spence and Pat wolf? If not it is a MUST read
im using a compressed load of 75 gr Goex FFg i had tried some of the off the shelf remington loads but i found that the black powder seems to be more accurate.
@nickatina40 You can load smokeless powder for this rifle, check speer reloading book. It has load especially for trapdoor . Pressure is the same as black powder without the mess. I use it for my 1873 trapdoor and it works fine. Lee now has a hollow base 405 grain mold that makes this rifle accurate one again.
whats the make of this one?

i havent read that book, ill have to buy it. the 75 gr is decent, as for a bullet its a 500 gr mould i got from Lee, it seems to work pretty well.

@Bruceman10 can you get the proper ammo for these in canada?

Nice rifle it looks like you are shooting black powder. What kind of load are you running through it?
ian45662 2 years ago
@ian45662 you wouldnt want to shoot anything but black powder in that gun. its so old that anything else might destroy it.
