I think you're missing the point of the term "individual". By saying that one is an individual, it is not an attempt to say that you are different or unique...but rather to say that one's choices are their own and not driven by the collective will of one's social group.
To be an individual boils down to a person choosing how unique or conformist suits them. You can have all these things in common, or you can choose to be unique and different than your peers.
We're basically thinking the same way. I don't think I missed the point, so much as did not explain it correctly. My definition of individuality borders closely on yours.
What I was saying is that most people see the definition of an individual as one who must remove themselves from something to be considered individualistic. 'Individual', I see it, is to basically hold your ground on the different aspects that make you who you are, whilst still being part of a community.
Yes, ok, I see now what you mean. To add my own view - most people do not know how to be individuals, or choose at least at some level choose to conform no matter how much they say they are different. There is such a presence of "social averaging" where the most common traits are duplicated by members of society and individual thought is drowned out by the perpetual hum of the collective will.
Anyone on the outside is made to feel small and weak.
One more detail that make us like a leaf of paper: we don't have only some things like all the others, we have MOST of the things like all the others, with only a few differences, a microscopic .
The most important things is how you use that things you have (be the ones everyone has or the ones only you have), and what you give to others around you.
Reminds me of a letter that was posted to a magazine by a 9 year old: "Hi, I'm Suzy, and everybody always tells me that I should be myself. I don't know what that is, could anyone explain to me how to be yourself? Please reply :)"
My sister just got accepted to "writing for performance" bachelor partially because you mentioned that letter as inspiration, rather than just naming established writers.
Kids ask lots of questions, sometimes we don't realize how great those questions are.

i love the fact that young people all act and dress the same as each other to be different.
All that happens is you get a whole bunch of people looking and acting the same saying are individuals.

Technically, everyone is an individual, making nobody an individual.
We're all a group of loose leaf paper, yet we're all marked with different colors in different designs.
