They are amazing. Some of the worlds best classical mussicians has tested the beolab 5, listening to every kind of music, and they prefer this speaker for playing so richly detailed and well balanced. In my opinion, no one beats a classical musician in listening, but i guess it depends on the ear to hear. Some HIFI nerds just have different goals...

@paranormaalutrecht I am a B&O fan, had all their products except for 9's and 5's and I agree, they are overrated. They just have the art factor which I am happy to make allowances in lesser performance for. As for B&O power ratings, they are a load of bullshit. I have a B&O lab 2 sub which is meant to be 700 watts, and it only puts out the same bass as a B&W 100watt sub, less if anything. I don't know how they measure their power outputs but it is different from every other manufacturer!

@sexyrexysexy I got the Beolab 2, and it sounds like it was twice its size. That is compered to several of my friends setup, ( Harman kardon - Bower & wilkins - Bose ) And they agree. In fact the B&w pv1 sub, has ICE power amp, from Bang & Olufsen. Why would a truly professinal HiFi company like Bower & wilkins use B&o amp, if its all about design/art? Take a look at b&o car stereo aswell.

I had a 9500 & 9300 and the power ratings was 80watts/8ohms per channel. that is also absolute bullshit. It's more like 30 watts. Run the same speakers with a good traditional amp that is 80 watts and there is NO comparison. but the sex appeal just ain't there!! That is what B&O is all about!! Art, design & functionality.....

The way B&O measures their power rating is bullshit. I added a beolab 2 (850 watts/ICE power) to beolab 8000 MkII and it would be lucky to have 80 watts of real power. I had a 100 watt sub by B & W and it ate it for breakfast & dinner!!

@ykliu1995 If you got a pair of Wilson Sashas powered by an Anthem P2 amp + Anthem pre-amp, plus 2 JL Audio f113 Fathom subs (which each have 2500 watts RMS; the same wattage each 'Lab 5 has) would pwn the 'Lab 5s. But, that setup would cost about 2x more. So you're right; the Beolab 5s are not the best speakers. Heck, that same system I mentioned before, but with Paradigm Ref. Sig. S8 speakers instead of the Sashas, would cost about the same as the 'Lab 5s, and could possibly outperform them.

The Penta's are really insane as well. Trying to repair them always drove me nuts!

I own a pair of Redlines as well as a few other things but I must say... you need to be there to experience them.

It would be beyond senseless to use BeoLabs for a techno party. The amps would overheat immediately and their response below about 75Hz would be laughable. Not to mention that a $1000 pair of professional speakers would blow them out of the water. Get something with a legitimate SPL.

Second the 2500 watts thing is a trick just like they do with car speakers. How many ohms are they? The watts is meaningless without this.

Think about it if they really used that much power you could not use a wall outlet.

Not knocking the speakers, I think they might help redirect the audio world a little closer to what matters: the sound. I really like the calibration mike and the frequency separation circuits.

They are indeed good speakers. But, I've heard them twice, and two other speakers I've heard, Paradigm's Reference Signature S6s powered by an Anthem PVA7 amp, and Wilson Audio WATT/Puppies, impressed me much more. But, I'd like to hear them again. The nearest dealer to where I live just re-opened, so I'll have a much better chance to.

I have the Bowers and Wilkins 800D, same price roughly. Anyway, I have listened to the 'B&O Beolab 5' in the London B&O store and I was quite upset how they sounded for the price. The problems I found were they are too controlled, there is not enough excitement, What HiFi says the same thing. They do look good though, but to be honest, I still think the 800D's are far better, they are more accurate. I would give the Beolab 5 a 4/5. Anyway, it's only my opinion, trust your own ears.

Can I suggest, if you haven't already to get those Pentas in for a service because I am sure the foam surrounds will probably be deteriorating but also the capacitors in the crossover / amp will be aging now and they will sound like different speakers after these have been replaced!

I am currently as I speak doing the same to some S-120's which are also fine examples from Denmark :)
