To finish - at the end of the aria, the crowd went wild with a standing ovation. As my voice teacher said, the key isn't volume, but tone - one that through correct technique vibrates sympathetically within the listener and the hall, that doesn't need to be forced by being loud. Hong taught me something that night that I'll never forget. When it's done right, no one has to tell you. You just know. I'm pretty sure we all learned that lesson that night.
Back in the nineties I saw Hong in Turandot at the Met, with Pavarotti. Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma received a somewhat obligatory cheer, seeing as it was started by a claque just in time to keep him from having to sing the high note (which never came), but Hong brought the house down with Ascolte. There were literally gasps throughout the house as the audience strained to hold back applause until the last note. Though not loud, every crevice and surface reverberated with her beautiful voice.
@castodivo: That proofs what I often tell people when talking about nationalities: who cares about the color and the size of a passport? They depend on laws regarding your parents' nationality or your place of birth or, eventually, your own choice. This lady is South Korean, but her art knows no geographic borders. Foreign languages can be learnt, pronunciation and expressiveness come with the genes. I am infatuated with her acting, can't help it! Greetings.-

@dinulipati LIeder singing and interpretation just doesn't get much closer to perfection than this. She should really be a teacher at a college and pass on his exquisite talent.
excelente......caracter...fuerza...suavidad..dedicacion e interpretacion......pasion.....y solo le acompaña el piano.....exquisita.........preciosa vozzzzzzzzzzzz
This is marvellous!!! Very beautifull performance! So delicate and expressive. I love this version! Wunderbar!! Meravigliosa! Una voz preciosa!!!! Thank you for posting this video!
@AngelR828 this is actually already fairly slow with what's recommended by most editors, it would drag too much if it was any slower than it was played in this performance
The only annotation by Schubert was: "Moderato". I like the Tempo in this execution. Actually I found it to be an accurate execution. I like the staccatto in the acompagnamenti and the expressive in the voice as well. Its a clean execution in my opinion
@ihma81 Yeah I wasn't saying it was a bad interpretation of the tempo marking...I was commenting on the fact that if played slower, the song might have dragged slightly. I don't think you understood my comment.
i will sing this in my exams this spring! very delicate song and very emotional...! i'm having a hard time though, cause my voice is a lot more dynamic than the song's, so i'll have to work more on my "delicate" tone.... hope it works.... :-)
She sounds lovely but she looks like she's trying to hang onto her dress somtetimes. I don't blame her-- it looks a tad too low cut, as though it might just slide off her chest at any moment.
She demonstrated facility with the language. An outstanding interpretation of Standchen. Her enjoyment of what she is singing made her beauty shine all the more.
Creo que esta versión de la Serenata de Schubert debería ser un poco más lenta. Deberían darnos más tiempo para disfrutar de esta hermosa pieza!!!!! XD
precisely wat i think. There isnt enough time to fully absorb each chord. Zzzz my ameb recording i bought for this song seriously sounds 10x better than that guy playing the piano...
Wonderful rendition of this classic lied. She has the proper "insight" while singing, but still managing to make it sound as beautiful and evocative as possible. Beautiful shaping of the words, as well. Her timbre, of the most velvety lyric quality, also helps a lot. She looks very pretty, what's not a requirement but is certainly a good advantage. :-)
beglücke , to make happy. "Komm, beglücke mich" is literally "come make me happy" i think. Thats what my singing teacher said it was and she's Austrian so i trust her XD
i'm learning this piece, and i sing along with the recordings, and i find it very difficult to pick up some of the notes she sings, like at "Flusternd schlanke Wipfel rauschen"

Stringquartetfan-Really it should be sung by a man- mot many women serenade their sweethearts. But it's a nice version, though if you want simple (which I do) there's nothing better than Joseph Schmidt.

Question.
I hear her sing the word besschmerz as "beschmerz" as opposed to "bes-schmerz"
The entire word takes up two notes, so it is possible to sing it, 'bes- schmerz'
An I hearing her right?
Is she right?
lizziethecreepy 3 years ago
If we are in the same place, the text is actually "Liebesschmerz,", and since the "bes" part is only on an eighth note, there isn't enough time to make the distinction between "s" and "sch." It works because it is a compound word and a short note value. If the note values were different, then she might reconsider, but even then I doubt it. She is right to keep the legato. It makes me happy to see that there are still people out there who can form educated opinions about music :-).
tritone212 3 years ago
It is a short note value, but the music is so slow I think you'd be able to take liberty with it.
To choose phrase quality over language could be an injustice for german lieder, don't you think?
Yeah; one just has to be educated in this kind of stuff.
