  • To finish - at the end of the aria, the crowd went wild with a standing ovation. As my voice teacher said, the key isn't volume, but tone - one that through correct technique vibrates sympathetically within the listener and the hall, that doesn't need to be forced by being loud. Hong taught me something that night that I'll never forget. When it's done right, no one has to tell you. You just know. I'm pretty sure we all learned that lesson that night.

  • Back in the nineties I saw Hong in Turandot at the Met, with Pavarotti. Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma received a somewhat obligatory cheer, seeing as it was started by a claque just in time to keep him from having to sing the high note (which never came), but Hong brought the house down with Ascolte. There were literally gasps throughout the house as the audience strained to hold back applause until the last note. Though not loud, every crevice and surface reverberated with her beautiful voice.

  • gorgeous!!!!!

  • Superb. Beyond superb.

  • She makes me want to be straight.

  • Stunning.

  • wow!

  • Oh, how wonderfull she performs the song. Her voice is sweet like honey.

  • the best version on youtube I've heard !

  • i love how she sang this :) grade 6 ABRSM singing exams here i come!!!

  • maravilhoso!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Interprétation très touchante !

  • @castodivo: That proofs what I often tell people when talking about nationalities: who cares about the color and the size of a passport? They depend on laws regarding your parents' nationality or your place of birth or, eventually, your own choice. This lady is South Korean, but her art knows no geographic borders. Foreign languages can be learnt, pronunciation and expressiveness come with the genes. I am infatuated with her acting, can't help it! Greetings.-

  • @dinulipati LIeder singing and interpretation just doesn't get much closer to perfection than this. She should really be a teacher at a college and pass on his exquisite talent.

  • @castodivo this kind of mastery cannot be taught.

  • It took a South Korean to teach us how to sing German music correctly.

  • excelente......caracter...fuerza...suavidad..dedicacion e interpretacion......pasion.....y solo le acompaña el piano.....exquisita.........preciosa vozzzzzzzzzzzz

  • This is a Birthday song?

  • Beautiful, excellent performance...

  • This is marvellous!!! Very beautifull performance! So delicate and expressive. I love this version! Wunderbar!! Meravigliosa! Una voz preciosa!!!! Thank you for posting this video!

  • It is hard to appreciate her performance, but her version looks like very delicate, unique and beautiful. Thank you for posting.

  • Romantic period by Schubert

  • Very expressive..... i love it. Because this video i try to play with my daughter

  • I'm singing this for a NYSSMA solo this year. This really helps me prepare. She did an awesome job. Loved it. :)

  • its in D minor which is the original key.

  • What is the key?

  • I really wish they played it a bit slower :x

  • @AngelR828 this is actually already fairly slow with what's recommended by most editors, it would drag too much if it was any slower than it was played in this performance

  • @mozartboy24

The only annotation by Schubert was: "Moderato". I like the Tempo in this execution. Actually I found it to be an accurate execution. I like the staccatto in the acompagnamenti and the expressive in the voice as well. Its a clean execution in my opinion

  • @ihma81 Yeah I wasn't saying it was a bad interpretation of the tempo marking...I was commenting on the fact that if played slower, the song might have dragged slightly. I don't think you understood my comment.

  • @mozartboy24

Oh!... I got it now.... :)

  • ¡Increíble!

  • i will sing this in my exams this spring! very delicate song and very emotional...! i'm having a hard time though, cause my voice is a lot more dynamic than the song's, so i'll have to work more on my "delicate" tone.... hope it works.... :-)

  • me too! ^^ good luck XD

  • I have to sing this on saturday :]

    so beautiful.i love singing it.

  • ugh gorgeous.... favorited.

  • Hermosa voz..

  • Ela canta divinamente, tem uma pronúncia maravilhosa!

  • She sounds lovely but she looks like she's trying to hang onto her dress somtetimes. I don't blame her-- it looks a tad too low cut, as though it might just slide off her chest at any moment.

  • Whatever it is, her version is very unique andbeautiful. Thank you for posting.

  • i find more feeling on this song sung by a mezzo.. the drama that adds a lower tone its just perfect for this song...

I liked this version, a bit too fast but sung perfectly :)

  • Wonderful!

  • She demonstrated facility with the language. An outstanding interpretation of Standchen. Her enjoyment of what she is singing made her beauty shine all the more.

  • it is such an amazing experience to listen to it... one of the times i am sorry i didn't put more efford in studing German

  • I think this version of Schubert's Serenade should be played a little slower. They should give us more time to enjoy this beautiful piece!!!! XD

    ..............................................................

Creo que esta versión de la Serenata de Schubert debería ser un poco más lenta. Deberían darnos más tiempo para disfrutar de esta hermosa pieza!!!!! XD

  • precisely wat i think. There isnt enough time to fully absorb each chord. Zzzz my ameb recording i bought for this song seriously sounds 10x better than that guy playing the piano...

  • Wonderful rendition of this classic lied. She has the proper "insight" while singing, but still managing to make it sound as beautiful and evocative as possible. Beautiful shaping of the words, as well. Her timbre, of the most velvety lyric quality, also helps a lot. She looks very pretty, what's not a requirement but is certainly a good advantage. :-)

  • que hermosa voz tiene esta cantante

  • what does Beglukke mean?

  • beglücke , to make happy. "Komm, beglücke mich" is literally "come make me happy" i think. Thats what my singing teacher said it was and she's Austrian so i trust her XD

  • thank you! I am also singing this song as part of my voice studies.

  • I'm doing this song in my singing lesson and i love it. It's absolutely beautiful. Goddamn, i wish i could sing like that though!

  • she has such a pretty face,like a doll!

  • nah i think it reaaally works its wonderful her interpretation. very true to the music

  • so wonderful and touching

  • very moving!!

  • The woman expressed the song VERY VERY well. ZZZzz but the pianist simply plays the notes! no expression

  • I thought he did extremely well. The appreciation chip in your soul might / must have been temporarily anesthetised.

I wish I could play like that - perhaps you can!

  • I was entranced and captivated by the whole wonderful performance and never noticed the 'hand thing'

  • wow, the way you expressed the song was incredible. This is an amazing piece.

  • i'm learning this piece, and i sing along with the recordings, and i find it very difficult to pick up some of the notes she sings, like at "Flusternd schlanke Wipfel rauschen"

i think it's because of her vibrato, i dunno

  • The notes above those words are La Do# Fa Mi Re La Fa Re. :D I study this piece, too.

  • Please!!! It's not difficult! you're just a bad musician! the vibrato....... ridiculous

  • Comment removed

  • absolutily beautiful love it!!!!

  • yes, very beautiful!

  • beautiful

  • I'm going to play this song with one of my music mates. I hope we sound so wonderful ^^

  • do you have the music to this music piece? violin or piano? can you give me the musice sheets, please?

  • I can make them photos and send it to you, 'cause my teacher gave it to me, I haven't the sheet inside my computer. Would you like to have the photos?

  • çok güzel tebrik ederim paylaşım için teşekkür ederim

  • how is her German? Im learning german these days..

  • Her German is not bad overall. I really enjoy this recording.

  • too bad youtube doesn't have a 'repeat' function (or do they??), for i have been hitting 'replay' for three days now, whilst studying for a beastly exam... and this video lifted me from the depths of hell.. many thanks :)

  • listening to youtube and studying is a god-send.

  • lightandcrispy:

Youtube is a Godsend for amateur singers, musicians& dancers-the brave souls who post their performances get feedback, and those watching learn. I stopped studying ballet. classical piano, hula, etc. years ago and I'm not a choirgirl anymore. But i still play the piano & love music. A suggestion to anyone taking voice lessons or learning a foreign language: listen to operas while reading the libretto.I learned 5 foreign languages & music helped immensely.

  • so tender and lovely.

  • i love this song but, yea, she makes it sound to operatic. i like the pure and simple sound better.

  • Stringquartetfan-Really it should be sung by a man- mot many women serenade their sweethearts. But it's a nice version, though if you want simple (which I do) there's nothing better than Joseph Schmidt.

  • GOOD

  • This interpretation is very operatic and not like a lieder.

  • NONSENSE!

    Wonderful pianissimo!

Ich wundere mich immer wieder, welcher Müll hier einerseits bejubelt wird, andererseits die Philister noch etwas anzumerken haben, wenn man etwas durchaus als gut anerkennen kann.

  • She is as beautiful as her voice. Just lovely.

  • Very, Very beautiful! I'm impressed greatly!

  • Stunning lady!

  • Buena interpretacion

    sentimiento, la esta disfrutando

  • Question.

I hear her sing the word besschmerz as "beschmerz" as opposed to "bes-schmerz"

The entire word takes up two notes, so it is possible to sing it, 'bes- schmerz'

    An I hearing her right?

    Is she right?

  • If we are in the same place, the text is actually "Liebesschmerz,", and since the "bes" part is only on an eighth note, there isn't enough time to make the distinction between "s" and "sch." It works because it is a compound word and a short note value. If the note values were different, then she might reconsider, but even then I doubt it. She is right to keep the legato. It makes me happy to see that there are still people out there who can form educated opinions about music :-).

  • It is a short note value, but the music is so slow I think you'd be able to take liberty with it.

To choose phrase quality over language could be an injustice for german lieder, don't you think?

Yeah; one just has to be educated in this kind of stuff.

  • doe's she in anyway sang the song serenade in korean language for the drama summer scent

  • volando voy...

  • Fantastic interpretation. Such a pure sound on the higher tesitura. Lovely... a real pleasure to listen to.

  • What a world of difference from that of Sumi Jo. Yuck~

A true keeper of the Bel Canto tradition. South Koreans and the Art Song enthusiasits everywhere for that matter- have a lot to be proud of in Hei-Kyung Hong.

  • one word.....AWESOME lol

  • WOW!!! she is really good, what an incredible voice!!!! This will help so much with my lessons, learning this song is tricky, thank you for posting it!!!!

  • I see un hear thousand times this lady singen these song and I can only say perfection and perseverance. All is perfect. I adore her.

  • Fabulous voice........so expressive. Excellent performance!

  • really nice!! wow..

  • BEAUTIFUL STREAM TOUCHING

  • Way to rock my socks

  • Very good madamme!

  • Beautiful voice and in perfect German!

  • very very nice......!!

  • Bravo! very nice, beautiful voice. I love it.

  • Precioso

  • preciosa voz y magnifica interpretacion.me gusta

  • Beautiful - if a little "operatic" for the Lied style - but what wonderful voice - and lovely looks!

    Lorna

  • komlett Korrekt tempo & Ton. Bravo auch das Vilja Lied ist nach Noten und tempo besser als "sumi " Manche Töne von sumi sind ein wenig höhe aber sons -ten gesamst Arien sind die "Hei Weltspitze !!!!!!!!!!"

  • Who is better, Hei-Kyung Hong or Sumi Jo????

  • SUMI JO! For me she's the best opera singer of all time. But Hei-Kyung Hong is amazing too.

  • @AurolaGerero Hei-Kyung is the best Korean soprano on record. If Sumi Jo is not even as good as Hei-Kyung Hong, how could Sumi be the best opera singer of all time??? I have never heard of one "best opera singer of all time" although perhaps Caruso, Gigli or Bjoerling may be considered "best operatic tenor of the 20th century" or "best tenor on record" but this is still debatable.

  • Hei- Kyung

  • different voices, different beauty

    childish question, wise response

  • remember Sumi Jo is a female Pavarotti

  • Really good diction.

    Brilliant color.

    Bravo.

  • ooo amazing

  • Hei-Kyung Hong is one of the most under-appreciated treasures in the opera world. Man. She is such a great actress, too!

  • Actually this is a serenade. Serenades are sung by men. However it has been sometime that everyone sings everything and why not.If sung well, like it is here beauuuutifully done I say, it is quite acceptable.

  • I deeply dispare for the human race sometimes.

How can anyone be led by what is supposed to be (ment) meant. This female voice has produced an exquisite rendition and the musical world is greatly enhanced because of it. Surely one makes one own mind up in matters of high art. Please do not be led by restrictive opinion. Release yourselves and enjoy high art to the full.

  • It seems that although this rendition absolutely universally appreciated it is quaint to find one opinion with an anesthetized musical mind.

  • It doesn't matter, woman or man..it is full of beauty. How it should be is not important, it is the artists that makes this wonderfull music a listener happy

  • The song is Beautifull and so is Hei-Kyung Hong absolutely top notch in all aspects. Thanks to Shubert, thanks to Hei-Kyung Hong and thanks to divabmc that bothered share this fantastic and beautifull music!

  • Wow!

HenryOdd says it all. Excellent/Brilliant piano playing also!

    Harry Schneider

  • Thumbs up for everyone. Magnifique!

  • i fell in love with this song after watching summer scent...

  • @DistantEmo I fell in love with Hei-Kyung Hong and her voice after watching her on TV years ago. I hope to have the opportunity of meeting her in person someday. She is so beautiful - in appearance, personality and voice - I adore her!

  • I cant stop watching this video

  • A simply glorious voice by this young oriental (Chinese?) soprano. It shows how universal the call of music is to the human heart. I wish our politicians could think in the same way. Someday, they will.

  • I totally Agree!

  • However, I was mistaken about her country of origin. She is Korean, not Chinese, and she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera ca. 1985. And her German seems quite good - at least the pronunciation.

  • Wow! SHE IS AWESOME

  • She is awesome!!!

  • OMG she does have a GLORIOUS voice!!! LOVE HER!!!!!

  • beautiful divine

  • If you love this rendition, also listen to Hans Hotter's recording. His interpretation is an almost frighteningly frank avowal of love.

  • She has a beautiful voice, but I could not enjoy the stacatto piano.

  • the problem lies on the piano and not on the painist I believe ,because recital hall pianos are not used much and so they always stay immature .

  • glorious voice!... she sings this song beautifully

  • i love this song, but im used to a guy singing it

  • wow just beutiful!!!

  • Stunning as always!

  • Great!

  • She is pretty good!

  • I want you my love, you are wonderful, exquisite interpretation

  • Beautiful! Perfect! Love it!

  • Wonderful!!

  • Beautiful. This is a really good interpretation of this lied. Her german is good. I liked this.
