  • I love the ghosted snare in this song, when you listen to the album version it almost feels like your imagining it!

  • amazing job love your tone

  • Dude. Fuck.

  • What kind of sticks does he use??

  • @PercussivePiracy He used to use Mike Mangini's signature stick; although a year or two ago he started using Vic Firth MS4 magnums. I'd recommend trying something like Thomas Lang's sticks (or a similarly heavy model) before you try the magnums though, the heavy sticks are a killer on your grip muscles before you get used to them. Hope this helps.

  • @TehJaytius The magnums are those giant walnut ones for marching snare I thought. Those are too heavy for me haha. I just started using Dave Weckl original signature sticks since they just came out with the wood tipped ones and they seem to be perfect for about anything I've found out, from playing jazz ballads to metalcore type styles. The DW evolutions are good for lighter playing too.

  • Cool sounding toms :)

  • such a tiny bass drum

  • beastly

  • u just like alex rudinger

  • @1515dexter Alex is just like Travis, he took lessons under Travis, so their styles may be a lil similar =)

  • @romeo13x thats cool man

  • Is there a dead mouse on your bass?

  • @rightwraith It's a spider :D

  • Your set up is quite interesting lol :) probs for being unique. Your drumming is on so on point so no need to complain about it !!

  • You're too fuckin' sick at drums man.

  • Man- I know nothing about politics- specially band politics. You're an extremely talented drummer, whatever you end up doing I'll be interested to see what is going on. Peace! A random fan.

  • moot with long hair. CANT BE UNSEEN

  • @Thisacchasnewsongs >Sees comparison between Orbin and Moot

    >Spaghetti falls out of pocket

    >mfw I'm dead

  • I spot a lefty in disguise!

  • Not necessarily, i play in a similar way and im right handed. Some of us want to keep our limbs as even in ability as possible.

  • LOL @ every other drummer who has attempted this song on YouTube

  • I respect Matt Halpern for his incredibly unique style, but to me, it is much more entertaining to watch some1 fucking destroy while keeping it together seeming calm and collected. Props bro!

  • What snare is that? Cause that is THE best sound ever.

    Even if its mic'd

  • hey mate fuckin nice ! love the ghost notes in your cover ahahahaha! it sounds amazing what mics did u use? and also the china cymbal stand, what make is it? xDDD thanksss

  • I think ghost notes sound sexy as fuck, so I don't know why everyone is bitching.

  • Getting a nice sound from that set-up.

  • nice dude.. nice

  • diddle at 2:33 looks fun :)

  • This is orgasmic!

  • personal set up preference maybe but i dont see the point of having it like this cos it makes certain methods ans styles impossible and i dont see what you get back in return

  • @BRAINDEAD776 Just watch his setup explanation video. I'd rather see an innovative setup like Travis' than have to look at another setup where the 12" tom is the same height as the snare drum, totally flat; with the cymbals higher than the drummer's head and the ride used as a crash.

  • @BRAINDEAD776 Yes, certain methods and styles become extremely difficult, BUT, with the style that Travis uses, which is less common, this setup makes it easier. He's just doin' something different and playing differently, and this setup works for it.

  • Pointless set up No.1, but whatever floats you're boat I guess.

  • @psychodrumplayer14 if you can't understand the difference in feel and rhythm this setup brings, you're probably not expanding your mind very well.

  • @SmokeyNevada I can understand that, like I said, whatever floats you're boat. I just think it's ridiculous even though he is an amazing drummer.

  • I wish my ghost notes were that powerful.

  • Glad I'm not the only person that uses the left foot mainly in some parts of songs. D;

  • THALLvis Orbin!

  • Love your EPIC face at 0:12 jaja LOL :'D

  • Cobus said he wants u on his show at DC...he said u were crazy awesome so i looked u up....he wasnt lying

  • You have an extraordinary set up, but I like it! It's different and not always the same. Keep drumming!

  • wow

  • when I click on the link for the transcription, all I get is a very small image of it.

what should I do? Could I be pregnant?

  • You just got pushed by Cobus on DC Live :)

  • Does any one know what hes riding on from 0:39 - 0:55? It looks like a hi-hat top or splash with a china underneath of it. What is it?

  • i have to say that your snare sounds incredible. what kind is it?

  • @OdysseyDawnMusic think it's a brass 14 x 6.5, maybe pearl reference - the lugs don't look right to be a dw

  • @OdysseyDawnMusic Its a Truth Custom brass snare im fairly sure, he wasnt endorsed by Pearl and pretty sure Pearl didnt have a metal reference snare at this point

  • Look at his composure throughout. Just flawless technique

  • What pedals does he use?

  • You should definitely do a video of yourself playing "Drown Within" by Ulcerate, such a behemoth of a track and extremely technical in all aspects.

  • Hes honestly the best drummer I have ever heard/seen

  • Respect

  • This is incredible man! These drum parts are a work of art :) that's the only way I can describe them!

  • this was your first video i ever saw, and aside from your work with pete peterson(because it's pete peterson stuff, it's crazy) this is my favorite still!

  • the way it should be played...

  • Ghost notes are accents, but accents are not ghost notes. Get it right everybody.

  • Your set up is fuckin incredible

  • HEY Travis! Are those ghost notes in the intro section simply singles and how the hell did you get them to be that fast? :D

  • more drumers need to be this good cant find one worth a shit around here

  • Orbin Wan Kenobi

  • I love how the guy that everybody is attacking credited Orbin with exceptional technique and control, but because he voiced an opinion he got trashed. Sad

  • @TheBeastcleave agreed my dude plus orbin is dope but too technical and no groove and sorry to say but extremely closed minded in that sense and i work at a studio everyone knows matt is king his mixture of tec and groove is king

  • @recklessreason I don't understand why it has to come down to that though. Why can't they both just be exceptional drummers in their own respect without need for comparison? Having experienced the exact same thing with the overly competitive music scene in my area, when people bring "who's better" into play it makes everything not fun...

  • @TheBeastcleave ...Maybe it's not like that for these guys, but it's still a shame that people spend more time arguing over "who's better" instead of watching the insane things they're both doing behind a kit.

  • @recklessreason I implore you to watch Travis' Nick Johnston session videos, and then reconsider the opinion that he has no groove, the man grooves his ass off for the whole record.

  • too bad travis orbin aint still in periphery

  • one of the greatest drum parts.....ever. matt halpern should have just stuck to this version.

  • wow. This is what i look up to. TALENT my friend. precise. SICK

  • Fuck i wrote indian. FUCK. WELL YOU GET THE IDEA

  • @indianwhiplashjones i found you lukey... I found you...

  • That drumset confuses me :|

  • Great fuckin video man. Ur such a good drummer. Nailed it

  • Amazing!!!

  • "Just play."

  • I kinda feel bad for anyone who does a drum-cover-vid of this song -- the comparisons they'll get (to some degree). It's just that no one will ever be able to top such a perfect, nuanced version as this - it's totally ridiculous. ...Unless Mangini gives it a try! heheh ;-) It's all evidence of one who simply puts in more work than anyone else -- combined with good taste & a true love of music.

  • @Peartyboy The reason this is perfect is because it's played by the guy who wrote the parts!

  • Recently I have found many mind blowing drummers and I noticed something.. Every one of them uses Vic Firth MS4 sticks :D For example Anup Sastry, Alex Rüdinger and Travis right here! Are those some magical sticks or what the hell is going on? Haha! I know that these guys are great players cuz they practice A LOT but I just thought that it's funny when they all use the exact same stick model. OH and they all use Pearl Demon Drive pedals also! :D:D

  • These are called innovative ideas/applications for a reason.

  • i love your great foot techniques(: with like not always using right foot for all single bass hits.

  • i love your great foot techniques(:

  • Amazing sounding china!! :)

  • I'd like to point out that compared to his rim shots his ghost notes are very, very ghosty!!

  • You really are a phenomenal drummer.

  • does anyone know what china cymbal that is?

  • No one has a right to say that he is playing the ghost notes too loud its his drum part, he wrote it he is playing it the way he chose. for people saying they are too loud, yes i love playing my set without hearing parts of what im playing. ! they sound cool, 2 they are also for timing. and also dynamic levels are proportional to eachother itsnot like there isnt a difference in his playing levels its a loud song so even the quiet notes can be a little louder.

  • @Indianawhiplashjones Or maybe they are not ghost notes at all. :)

  • @Indianawhiplashjones You, sir, are entirely right!

And i also prefer the Ghost notes not so "ghosty", i like to hear them :p

  • @Indianawhiplashjones Well said!

  • @Indianawhiplashjones its very possible that they are louder in the mix for intention of hearing the part its self over the actual track too. people should be bitching anyways.

  • @Indianawhiplashjones i can't believe trolls comment about his ghosts being " too loud" that's fucking ridiculous. at least you can hear them now and TRY and understand them, i dont understand that one handed roll bullshit thing in the first of icarus lives....adda boy travis

  • @boobmonter64 I love how when someone voices an opinion you don't like, they automatically become a "troll." However, that said, I think his ghost notes are fine. His style is a little too technical and precise for my taste, but he's pretty beastly.

  • @Indianawhiplashjones Not to mention that the drums are considerably boosted in this mix. If they were even in the mix like a normal drum part they would be much harder to hear.

  • this looks too easy for him..

  • I want a close up of that ROLL!!!! I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about.

  • Someone please tell me how he gets his right footed hi-hat set up so comfortably?!

I'm attempting to mimic his style and i can barely gain control of the hihat because of my low tom. Drums and cymbals in identical positioning.

    PLEASE HELP ME!

  • @MrJAMORT he has a video explaining his kit and i think he mentions that

  • @MrJAMORT is your hi hat stand legless? it looks like his is, thats why he can fit it between the bass drum and floor tom. that's my guess atleast

  • His set up is so original. I love it.

  • Periphery should have a single with this drum version, this is ridiculously amazing.

  • @ibafish

I find something funny about this statement because the way he ghost notes in this I feel like gives it so much more groove, feel, and finesse, and one of the primary things people say is that well Matt has more groove and Travis is more technical (which I find bogus anyway but my opinion).

    Orbinator crushes all!

  • what's the time signiature at 2:54?

  • @topcat3355 4/4. Beats are displaced, which gives it an odd time feel.

  • You're amazing :)!

  • @ibafish well tbh i should probably have deleted that comment it was pity stupid. i mean travis being one of my favorite drummers ever i had to respond but idk i take it back haha. but i have found that matts kit set up realy works for me but with out the china on the side as well.

  • Shit is so awesome. Man so who are you playing with now?

  • If I had to give my opinion it would be this: The loudness of his ghost notes greatly accentuates the loudness of his rim shots (ie. the difference between his ghosts and rim shots is well within what would make a regular drummer). T. Orbin's greatness falls within what I deam awesomeness.

  • just curious. you seem to be ambidextrous when you play. are you? cause i see that you have a right foot bass drum but you play so proficiently with your left foot, which by the way is amazing!!! something i aspire to accomplish in my own drumming. thanks

  • @ibafish This video aside, watch Travis' other vids, and you will see he is a master of Dynamics, softer ghost notes and all. He knows what he's doing.

  • is he lefty?

  • @SUBLIMEDUDESTP open handed playing, so essentially he can play lefty as well.

  • Jesus mother of god. I don't want to play drums anymore.

  • @ibafish And you're certainly entitled to it. No offense taken at all, you conveyed your opinion tastefully and tactfully - thank you.

  • cracked china?

  • @ibafish He's a true expert of what he's doing... Soft Ghost Notes; leave them out to the funky and softer stuff... Hard ghost notes to Periphery

  • also travis have you ever done drumline or anything like that?

  • just to tell all the faggots that are saying travis orbin is better then matt hellpern and vice versa neither is better then the other they are both talented the both have there playing styles unique to them so if you say one is better then the other then your just igorant and dont understand drumming let alone music very well

  • saw of legends... the whole time i was like... damn that guy plays and looks just like travis orbin... found out when i got home it was him

  • @ibafish matt playes so much louder that travis. apparently his heads need to be changer like every 4 songs in the studio cos they are completely pitted and sound like shit. travis is far more subtle

  • @jamy313 You don't truly know how loud someone plays until you stand next to them in a room or -- at the very least -- see them perform live. If that's something that impresses you, well I've dented a fresh snare head in under ten minutes and I also change the batter every 3 - 5 tunes; not that it's a contest, or anything.

  • @shaftninja when you put it like that, you sure make it sound like a contest... no hate intended, love your style of playing, you're just coming off as a bit affronted.

  • @adioskaterdude999 I think he was trying to make the point that playing loudly and powerful shouldn't be something that should "impress" someone or label someone as a "better" drummer. I took his remark as being semi sarcastic... not that he's trying to compete in who can play louder or dent more snare heads, he's obviously a much more developed drummer than that. But if someone is criticizing his playing w/o knowing FULL WELL WHY he plays a certain way, he has a right to defend/explain himself.

  • The best part about all of your videos... you provide the drum transcription. THANK YOU!

  • Awesome drum track.

  • @ibafish Loud, heavy music calls for loud, heavy playing. Why perform something if it won't be heard?

  • @shaftninja I wish I had a recording of you playing this instead of the cd version. You are a MONSTER!

  • @shaftninja best comeback ever.

  • @shaftninja Couldn't agree more.

  • @shaftninja Yeah, travis is right. FUCK MATT HALPERN

  • @0waggoner you're trolling, right? Please tell me that extravagantly ignorant comment was a troll.

  • @shaftninja They're called "ghost" notes for a reason

  • @profezmo I was conveying my opinion/approach in a non-ignorant manner, unlike yourself. Music is obviously considered an art form, thus everything is open to individualized interpretation. If we all played the same and subscribed to the same school of thought then that would be quite boring, no?

  • @profezmo Based on your attitude I doubt you really give a damn, but I began playing my ghosts louder in heavy music upon digesting Sikth's 'Death Of A Dead Day' and Meshuggah's 'Nothing' (not the re-release) records, which featured ghosts that were quite high in the mix.

  • @profezmo His point is still valid. Obviously they're called "ghost" notes for a reason, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be heard at all.

  • @shaftninja I completely agree with Travis here. Ghost notes should be heard clearly too, but still be recognized as ghost notes. But then again, that's just my opinion, peace n' stuff...

  • @shaftninja the whole reason this song is so groovy is because of all the...I guess you could call them grace notes on the drums. Your reasoning is why I think whoever their old drummer was, was much better with the band than matt. This song is supposed to be beautiful, not obnoxious(although, I do like some obnoxious music sometimes).

  • @decimater75 Their old drummer was Travis himself! This was made shortly after he left the band.

  • @Mp5Drummer i know...i couldn't remember the dudes name-.- and now i realized this is him lol.

  • @ibafish Matt and Travis are both terrific, but Travis has such an insane amount of ambidexterity and his ability to lead with his slave foot, then switch to his right foot effortlessly is insane. Not to mention his ability to keep his rhythm using his left hand, also effortlessly. I find Travis more exciting to watch, in terms of technicality.

  • HOLY AWESOME SNARE SOUND JESUS BATMAN

  • That 8th toe high hat with his right foot while he does the bass with his left. Fuckin Nuts.

  • @JosefPlaysDrums Exactly what i was just thinking lol.

  • that rat gives im an awsome POWER to play drums

  • @paxon2411 It's a spider actually :D

  • i want that bass drum

  • snare skills!

  • The Orbinator strikes again.

  • matt halpern, cameron losch, sam applebaum, and you, sir, are the reason i try at all

  • Thats a weird setup. Great cover though

  • @NICKHAM16 Not a cover, this video's from when he was in the band, he composed a lot of their drum parts :)

  • @Mp5Drummer He is still covering the song though

  • @NICKHAM16 But it's more of a playalong, which is why he wrote "Playalong" in the title and not "cover".

  • @NICKHAM16 Aren't you aware that Travis wrote the drum parts for this song? Therefore I don't think this can be called a "cover".

  • he makes it sound so fucking easy

  • 0:22

  • @zilgrerem i type fast so its normal that sometime i fuck up

  • Halpern is better, that is all.

  • @TeamTwinsanity Ur wrong, that is all.

  • @romeo13x And how do you explain that? Travis is like Bender(robot) playing drums, he plays it perfectly but

he doesn't have any groove or feeling in it, Halpern has both of them.

  • @TeamTwinsanity I feel Travis has plenty of groove and feeling in his playing. Just cuz he isn't sometimes all over the place like Matt sometimes looks, and is a lil more refined and polished in his style, doesn't mean he doesn't have any. Although Matt's playing sounds nice, he can sometimes looks a llil too all over the place and sloppy, that's how i feel. If you go on Matt's vids, you'll see plenty of people say they feel Travis is better as well. It's all about the end result.

  • @TeamTwinsanity You don't judge Michelangelo on how he looked when he painted, you look at his paintings. I feel music is auditory first, and i feel that's how a musician should be judged.. by what they play, not what they look like while doing it. As you shouldn't judge an artist by what they look like when painting, but by what they put down on the canvas.. and I feel Travis paints a much prettier, detailed picture.

  • @romeo13x I don't look the drummer, how he plays, I can HEAR the feelings in Halpern's drumming. Music is for listening, and paintings are for watching.

  • @TeamTwinsanity And i can HEAR and FEEL it in Travis'. I'm not bagging on Matt, i think he's a great drummer as well, when you get to the level of these guys, it's hard to say who's better, it just becomes more of a matter of preference... And come on dude, u know what i meant, it's all art =)

  • @romeo13x Well, let's say that we got different taste of musicians, and as I said before, Travis plays flawlessly, but I like musicians who live for and in music, maybe just Halpern's style suits me more so we'r cool. :)

  • @TeamTwinsanity yeah man.. and let me just say that believe me when i say Travis lives for and in music... He's not like a youtube cover drummer.. he actually was in Periphery and does session work for all these other bands and videos, and is on tour at the moment i believe with Of Legends... He definitely lives for and in music =)

  • absolutely perfect technique! amazing
