Technically he doesn't have a great voice, but I think it suits his songs really well. IMO they wouldn't work so well with James singing them, Nicky has a raw emotion in his voice that James seems to lack.

Brought his album and was blown away. Sure he doesnt sound "polished" the way most modern day musicians sound but nevertheless, it is still so pure and real that I cant help but love it.

Bobby untitled is one of my favourites. Makes me cry everytime...it just touches a sensitive string, I suppose.

I would just like to clear this up about Nicky's voice. He is not a distinguished singer, and James is certainly better, I admit that. But there is definately something there. With a few lessons he would be so much better (even though he is brilliant now). As I have said before, he is never completely out of tune. Sometimes by a microtone (usually flat) or so, and to an untrained ear you can hear. At least he recognises his vocal limits and has release his own album, and I admire him for that.

easily his most listenable song...along with dying breeds which is a manics b-side, i think it shows that his vocal range, as narrow as it is (James's is bigger than the grand canyon! lol) he can pull it off on occasion like this shows...if it was football we're talking about then its a bit like trying to put Petr Cech or Brad Friedel up front and expecting them to score 2 goals every game!

I love Nicky. The only thing I would say is having seen the clip where he sings it live, he seems ill at ease and needs to bring the same flamboyance to his singing as he does to his bass playing. Rather than hiding behind his mic. Good song but he does need to work on projecting his voice over the music when he does it live.

Ok, so his voice may not be the best in the world, he's sometimes a little bit flat or sharp, but he's never completly off the mark. At least he's on key. The Wire is a genius. He's amazing with words. I mean, just listen to "If You Tolerate This..." or "Design For Life". So he's not as great a guitar player as James, but so what? He did all the guitar (except the solo on "Kimono Rock") on the album and it's phenominal. Not many musicians at the moment can write like the Wire.

Also, there's hardly any bass singers around. (Nicky usually sings in bass range) They're nearly always tenors or trebles, the odd baritone. So it's good to hear a bass release a record.

It's hard being a lower singer. I myself am a female alto and I've turned up to many auditions only to be turned down because they're looking for sopranos. It's good for a band when you can sing all the lower stuff, I just think lower singers aren't given the same opputunites as higher. Long live The Wire!

Nicky's voice takes some getting used to, but I love it. It's so sincere and isn't painful to listen to.

And Julian Casablancas can sing. His voice is croaky but the notes are right. Nicky's often way off the mark.

Hasn't proven much of an impediment to them. Talented people will write great songs.

What's with all the bitching about his voice? There are loads of vocalists in pop/rock music that can't 'sing' in the conventional sense (including many greats - John Lydon, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Mark E Smith, could go on forever)It's expression that's important.
