It's a mixture of regular old sugar and KNO3 Potassium Nitrate (commonly known as saltpeter). It needs to be heated or cooked, but if it burns it could ignite and burn down your house, so I always do it outside. They are very dangerous as the mixture will ignite with the smallest spark.

Nope, regular granulated sugar works just fine, and thats what all the instructions i've read say to use.

Don't try it although unless you know what you are doing. If you get the mixtures wrong it will make a pipe bomb, which could easily kill you.
