I love it! She said what she felt . She came up dirt poor in New Orleans, knew racism first hand and never forgot it. I read she had callouses on her hands from the domestic work she did in her early days. When Dr King came to Chicago alot of black ministers and politicians didnt want him there making trouble. She stood firm and supported him. She did not march cuz she couldnt or wouldnt be spat on and beat it wasn't in her character.. I dont think she got over King's death. Love the clip!
Was this after she got back from Munich following her collapse? She seems to have sleepy eyes, so I'm guessing this was shortly before her death the following year. Either way though, she's speaking the truth. Whether she was singing, or talking like she is here, she let the truth come out. My favorite Gospel Singer of ALL time, and truly the best.
Mahalia never got over Martin Luther Kings death, thats why she made that comment in the end, (don't shoot me in the head, i'll tell it to your face) referring to the way Martin died for what he beleived in and spoke about. He was one of her best friends and she felt like he was here to save the black race, and when he died she felt like no one else picked up the mantle as strongly as he carried it.
@jadon360 I thought she intended to say "don't shoot me in the back of my head, i'll tell it your face", meaning don't be a coward and talk behind my back cuz I will say it in front of you. None the less I agree with your comment.
Miss Jackson worked so very hard all her life (read her biographies), and this must be why she believed in a strong work ethic. I have heard her say before that "we must get up and help ourselves and walk to the mountain." The mystic force within (the Divine) motivated her because she really did believe in it.

Very interesting to note that she died the very next year. I remember watching the event of her collapsing while playing the piano.

Jesse Jackson has added former Chicago Democrat
Congressman Mel to Rainbow/PUSH Coalition's payroll.
Reynolds was among the 176 criminals excused
in President Clinton's last-minute forgiveness spree.
Reynolds received a commutation of his six-and-a-half-year
federal sentence for 15 convictions of wire fraud, bank fraud,
and lies to the Federal Election Commission. He is more notorious, however, for concurrently serving
five years for sleeping with an underage campaign volunteer.
