great stuff. i played this record to death when it came out. the csn&y gang often played martin acoustics--D41s & D45s. they hung together w/ members of the airplane on mt. olampali in marin county (about 2 miles from where im writing) and recorded both crosby's solo debut and kantner's "blows against the empire" (another great record also featuring garcia et al.) around the same time.
This sounds like it was recorded live with no overdubs. The acoustic guitars are gorgeous. I assume they're playing Martins. If any knows what models, I would appreciate a reply.
OMG I never heard this before and I am in love with the music of David Crosby, Jefferson Airplane, etc. "If I Could Only Remember My Name" is one of my most treasured albums. Where and how did you find this?
with paul kantner on banjo and grace slick on piano. paul k presented a finished version of this song on the PERRO album. paul k also took the structure of this song and rewrote it as "Million" on Sunfighter
I think people get confused about the PERRO (Planet Earth Rock And Roll Orchesrta) sessions, which are (offically) unreleased, and happened in 1970/71 during sessions for Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" album. They included members of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash among others.
The Paul Kanter PERRO album came much later, 1984, and included Ronnie Montrose, Jack Cassidy, Grace Slick and Ansley Dunbar among others.
Search "David Crosby PERRO Sessions" (Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra) and "David and The Dorks" in google IMAGES to find a blogspot to download these rare unreleased recordings from.
And yes, David Crosby did put out a incredible studio album with Jerry Garcia (with The Grateful Dead, Graham Nash, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane and others) in 1971, called "If I Could Only Remember My Name." It's a gem!
..........goosebumps............
