The Linguistic Turn in philosophy was the wrong turn, Philosophy has gotten lost in semantics. Forget about truth and freedom, we need a political philosophy that can actually free the individual in a concrete and pragmatic way.
Do you suppose Davidson could beat the snot out of Rorty in a fair fight? Rorty talks tough, but I'm not sure he's got the guns to back it up. He's got almost 20 yrs on Davidson, but looks kinda soft, like he's spent too much time reading Proust, while Davidson looks lithe and wiry for his age, like someone who's traded piano sonatas for a surf board. I have a feeling Davidson did better with the ladies, too. I mean, Rorty's a great read and chicks don't really get off on anomolous monism
@avos1968 wtf are you talking about? you don´t even consider it possible "the ladys" might be philosophers too, not just chicks of philosophers who have to get off on their thesis?!
'sigh'...Part of me is always saying 'look at him...over there, couched between his two henchmen Relativism and Scepticism...but what if he's right? Oh god what if Rorty's right?' Then the other part of me, the part I like, says 'Back ye vage and undermining monstrosities of concepts; yield to the power of Reason and Logic: Martial the troops and alert colonels Russell, Frege, Tarski and The Earlier Wittgenstein. Send for the Vienna Circle (but don't wake Godel!) and have Carnap on standby!'
@richardtheteague how can u have such an inciteful and intelligent comment...n i accidentally click on ur name n it takes me to ur page, where my ears get assaulted by teddy bears? WTF DUDE LMAO!
dot8daisy: Instead of "idiot" you should have called them doody-head. Doody-head is a most excellent thing to call people when they are wrong. I often call people doody-head because I find a lot of people often say things I think are wrong. Your contribution to reasoned discussion of ideas about which reasonable people can and often do disagree should not limit itself to such terms as "fool" and "idiot" but expanded not only to doody-head, but ka-ka face, and "your mother wears combat boots."
No apology necessary. I get up on my soap box from time to time when I read people calling one another names. On a page where great philosophers are having a serious discussion it just feels out of place. I apologize both for my over the top sarcasm and for doing it publicly when I could easily have sent a personal comment instead.
Two of the most important philosophers on the 2O th century. The discussions are interesting and really relevant in their tradition. The arguments are, in each case, very clear.
How weird to find these two on U-tube. I am a fan of Rorty, but its good to seem him a little more sheepish in the flesh than he is in his books. A little less swagger there. Well done Davidson for a a steady nerve and intellect.
i saw this discussion on google video... with this kind of insight, coherence, subtlety and clarity , philosophy gets such an esthetic upgrade that it becomes pure art.
Yeah, I found it on google. I checked to see if someone had posted it on youtube, and no one had. I figure since I have so much Rorty already, people can get their fix in one spot.
And I agree, there is something of an aesthetic quality to hearing two very intelligent and profound thinkers discuss topics like this.
he grew so very old :(
