The Sl55 is more fun when you are driving the speed limit. SL55 has more body roll in corners and feels less safe at twice the speed limit. Sl55 is a luxury car that is fast. M5 is the ultimate getaway car if your girlfriends ex is chasing you.

BMW IS the benchmark, how about you do some research. When companies test cars, first thing they test it against is a BMW, NOT Audi, NOT Mercedes. The first company to bring out the term "sports sedan": NOT Audi, NOT Mercedes, but BMW.
BMW = sport-biased, lacking in luxury department. I don't think Mercedes/Audi even intended to be "sport sedans" at first, which is why BMW is the benchmark there. Mercedes/Audi focus more on comfort and luxury while BMW more on it's engine and sportiness. Sit in a BMW and you'll see how dull the interior is. There's your answer as to why it's the benchmark.
Well, that's a matter of opinion. I find the BMW interiors to be quite lacking, it's borderline luxury. If I'm going to be spending that much on a car, I wanted to look good on the interior too. People who buy BMW are either badge snobs or buy it for the engine itself.

Who cares, thers is not much in the drag stakes, but the SL murders the grandpa 4 door in looks and can cruise with the top down - the SL driver gets to utilise all the positves of the Merc, whereas all the M5 owner can tell his single mates is - I beat a SL in a drag - great stuff, but the SL guy is dating your girlfriend and your mum cos they aint ridin in no saloon.

Stock for stock an M5 is still quicker than an SL55 though.
The SL has alot of torque so it's quick off the line, but it is heavy and doesn't make very good use of its power at high speeds.
It's a Rodeo cruiser, not a race car.
The M5 has much better gearing for acceleration than an SL55, and its top end power is unmatched by any other car I've ever driven.
I've raced many both on a strip and the highway; the M5 always pulls harder.

The results would be almost exactly the same.
S65 would beat the M5 up to around 160, then M5 would pull.
But the SL65 is lightest so it would be quicker than the CL65.
And the S65 is way heavy it'd be the slowest by far.

BMW = sport-biased, lacking in luxury department. I don't think Mercedes/Audi even intended to be "sport sedans" at first, which is why BMW is the benchmark there. Mercedes/Audi focus more on comfort and luxury while BMW more on it's engine and sportiness. Sit in a BMW and you'll see how dull the interior is. There's your answer as to why it's the benchmark.
