I drove past on the motorway that night and it looked like the whole shopping centre was burning. This story still brings a lump to my throat and a tear in my eye.
As a kiwi I know a bit more about this story then the video actually lets on. Royd the firefighter was making conversation with her when she told him she liked horses (this was not captured on video) then that is when he told her he would take her horse riding. Some of the footage on this was taken from a Kiwi show that was on at the same time as Rescue 911 called heroes that had more detail in it then this. Still a bloody courageous act one im sure many would not repeat.
Granted, but maybe giving her something to look forward to was the best way to help her keep calm so she didn't inadvertently get herself and possibly her benefactors killed. All I know for sure is I love their accents. I wonder what she's up to lately?
That's what the fire fighter in this instance would have been doing, not only to help her remain calmer and more focused, but also as a genuinely human act of compassion.
When the girl was under the tanker and the guy said he'd take her horse riding, that'll would hardly be the main thing on her mind- even someone like myself who is horse mad would be more worried about the flames!!
Being able to give a victim something to focus on, no matter how trivial, can often help them to stay calmer. We carry soft toys on our fire appliances for children involved in serious road accident etc.
to help keep them "occupied" whilst cutting their family members out of their vehicle.
hey Guys & Gals, this Episode almost Creeped me out! My Dad was a Firefighter!!! this Shows, No Matter Where in the World, firefighters are There when Danger Appears!!! Let's Hope Someone makes Sure that Tanker Trucks are Carefully Checked out so We Never see a call like that,AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
@fightboss u can inspect tankers all you want, but accidents will continue to happen. Many times it is not the tank driver's fault. There was an incident about 3 years ago near my home area, that involved a tanker. Irony is that the accident was caused by an incredibly rich doctor. Even to this day his wife continues to pester the oil company and tank truck driver. She continues to blame the tanker for an accident her husband caused.
Parking a car in the middle of the road is sooooo womenish. Yes ladies this is how you cause an accident. She did not mean to but she did it anyway. And then you have to risk your life to save her, damn.
a501322914- if u did notice, it wasn't because she was parked in the middle of the road that caused the crash, the white car that tried to pull out in front of the tanker caused him to swere and hit brakes. pay attention before u open ur mouth
Some of the firemen lost their jobs? They never said anything about a bunch of firemen losing their jobs after this happened! If that's true, then that's messed up!
I can remember they renamed the show Rescue 111 in New Zealand after everyone kept calling 911 in an emergency. This particular segment also screened on the locally made show Heroes which was similar to Rescue 911.
I remember this from when I wa a kid. Note the commentary that Royd "took off" and "we had to move guys into positions where they were exposed to danger [to cover Royd]". Many firefighters got badly burnt covering this guys bum. I used to think of this guy as a hero, I even wrote to him when I was about 8. This guy cost many firefighters thier jobs, now I think he's a quick thinking glory hog. I've lost all admiration for him.
Bravonov: Quick thinking glory hog? He risked his own life, knowing that the truck might suddenly explode into more fierce fire, and his buddies did their jobs covering "his bum" in a successful attempt to save a young girls life! If they hadn't done that, both him and the girl would have died. Quick thinking glory hog? I think not. In the end, they are all heroes. Royd put his life out the most, not those who was covering him. A small sacrifice to lose your job after something like that.
I wonder if that had happened today if with the technology advances we have now if they could have saved her leg. It's amazing what a few years of research can do. That being said, that girl had luck on her side.
I think the girl and firemans were scared but that one dude that saved her wansnt scared probally for her though i feal sorry for her that she lost her leg but its better than looseing your life i think so.
all the fire men that were there all got bernt roid didint graim haycoc is my frend and all the fire min gont angyat roy becos he got all the fame and ather fire min riskt there lives to

Hahahaha! Man, I remember creeping out of my bedroom when I was supposed to be asleep, watching Unsolved Mysteries over my parents shoulders without them knowing, then being too scared to get to sleep! Served me right!
BWAHA! but I agree with Jump2 on the gangster issue. They are just fulla hot air that rapidly fizzles out near a bigger heat source, if you know what I mean.
I agree. I would gladly sacrifice a leg so that I could continue living, especially as she was so young. She has her whole life in front of her, so much to look forward to.
Your Sunday Nights? Rescue 911 came on on Tuesday Nights, and Unsolved Mysteries came on on Wednesday Nights, and then on Friday nights starting in 1994. Or, are you referring to reruns?
Same here, I grew up on this and Unsolved Mysteries. Now being a firefighter, once in a while (now I am inactive due to chronic illness, I'm only 23, which sucks more). But responding to some calls and being on some scene's reminded me of some of the rescue 911 episodes and brought back those eerie memmories, especially night time scene's.
you are right!! thank you!! I am sorry for being such a fuzzy young man.. Good answer since noone knows that she will get the useful artificial legs in the future.. or not... but best wishes for her..
I read about this young lady and the man who resuced her a while back. She lost her legs but got artificial ones, and the man who rescued her allowed the girl to ride his horses as therapy.
I wouldn't say losing a limb is worse than death, especially not with prosthetics nowadays. I think becoming paralyzed from the neck down would be worse than death, though.
Wow I remember when that happened!! Its funny though when you watch something like this that has NZ people in it but is an international programme, you can really hear an accent. Yet watching our tv. Theres nothing!!
i still can't believe what royd did; running into that huge gasoline fire!

Thank you for this. He's a hero......regardless of the petty politics that some people in New Zealand have on the matter.
