Ribot is amazing such a pity that tesio never got to see what he had worked his whole life for to breed a superhorse not just a horse that won all the big races but a horse that destroyed his opposition with ease. he said ribot was a very intelligent horse he knew when he had to prove himself and when he could take it easy he would play up at italian racecourses but tesio said he changed when he went to longchamp and ascot he was very focused and relaxed. 1 of the best horses ever no question.
@TheDarleyarabian Here in Italy there are three/four books (one in particoular "Ribot, cavallo del secolo" by Renzo Castelli) were there are a lots of Ribot (very good quality)
If you want many informations, send me a private message, and I will explan you better ^^
Then, I can link you some images I founded (good pictures)
And you can ask everything about him, his owner (Federico Tesio) and his friend too (Magistris), and his parents (Romanella and Tenerani [from Tofanella])
whoever would win between the greats would be to do with the fact horses are flesh and blood the same horse probably wouldnt win every race run at different courses its nothing to do with man made contaptions
The going at Ascot that day was very heavy, so the press were predicting that the Italian wonder horse, who had never previously run in such conditions, would meet his Waterloo. How wrong they were!
I'm not sure what you mean. "Fixing" has always gone on in racing but no one could have arranged for the bad weather that caused the going at Ascot that day to be so heavy. I'm sure that Ribot's starting price couldn't possibly have gone out as far as 10/1, in England at least. The fact is that the field included some good horses - like High Veldt, Toadrai and Roistar - and a lot of people thought that a horse and jockey from Italy wouldn't be able to handle having to race through a sea of mud.
I mean his first race out of Italy. Even if he was still unbeated (in Italy!), there was a lot of scepticism around his ability, and he had to race with horses older than him. But Ribot was a crack.... The second best crack in history.
But, I repeat, the principal doubt concerning how Ribot would fare at Ascot related to the going. Because he had only previously raced on firm going in Italy, the media in England doubted that he could adapt to such muddy and heavy conditions. I wouldn't rate Ribot second to any horse, be it Sea Bird or Secretariat.
Ribot was the best racehorse of that century. He is second only to ECLIPSE, b.1762, d.1789, the father of 80% of all thoroughbreds in the world. Eclipse was a fantastic horse, 18/18 wins: "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere"... About the heavy conditions of the field, and so on, you're surely right.
Joe was unlucky never to have been aboard a Derby winner. In 1956 he was very much overshadowed by his brother, Manny, who was later tragically killed when kicked by a horse he was attempting to mount prior to a race. Years later, Willy Carson was very lucky to survive a similar incident.

very impressive horse but its pointless comparing different generations so just enjoy the memories of all the great horses over the years :}

@littlebay75 Not pointless, that's what stopwatches are for.

No wonder Willie carson on Sat compared the horses Ribot and Montjeu to Harbinger. My favourite jockey ever.

Ribot was probably the best ever over 12F.

Think about this: who bet Ribot's win, won ten times! Ribot was given 10/1 !!!!!
