  • Watch Tommy Kono's instructional video if you're really interested in doing the clean and jerk properly.Everyone please like this so that it remains at the top for people interested in doing this lift well. Tommy Kono is a two-time gold medalist in weightlifting and an Olympic weightlifting coach for the US and former coach for other countries as well. If you're going to listen to someone, why not hear it from one of the best?

  • I got two jerk methods as well. Left hand and right hand.

  • what if i have weak knee's?

  • @skibumwin Figure out how to strengthen the so that you don't get hurt. Resistance bands are good for strengthening the muscles around joints. That's what I was given to strengthen an ankle after an injury.

  • his knees are way over his feet, and he's on his toes. terrible form.

  • his form is decent for somebody who doesn't do solely Olifting iow not a specialist. most coaches in Olifting realize you do NOT pull the bar up with your traps. you use the traps to assist pulling you under the bar. watch slo-mo of elite lifters and you see that. and it's technically NOT a jump. jump is from the front of the feet. the hip extension in the clean and the snatch are both from more of the mid foot. many elite lifters don't even rise on the toes at all. good vid though

  • The weight's too light for travis to even need to bend his knees... It's a power clean anyway, and truthfully unless you're getting into olympic lifting itself you might not really need to learn how to full clean vs power clean anyway, since both are great for developing power.

  • this video should be renamed as a power clean, but even so, it's not a particularly good example of one. i know that he is a strong man competitor, but weightlifting is a whole other ball game, especially in terms having really good technique from the beginning.

  • 3:16 and fart !!!!

  • My two jerk methods are left and right handed

  • I have more than two jerk methods, but eh, to each his own.

  • Travis are you a weightlifter?

  • to everyone bashing travis pleez remember tht his technique might not be good it is certainly far better than all the other idiots who run around youtube at least he has some idea about wht he's tlking about

  • this niggas weak!

  • travis ortmayer is a Worlds Strongest Man competitor...im pretty sure he knows what he's doing

  • You're doing reverse curls, not cleans.

  • TwinMuscleWorkout sent me here.

  • by far best step by step to the lift to jerk. thank you

  • Comment removed

  • I got news for you, real lifters wouldn't watch a 5 minute video on how to do one of the most complex lifts you will ever learn.

  • dont listen to this guy lol, watch any professional olympic lifter ...this is not how they do it

  • should never lift weight behind ur back

  • @leo69er

HAHAHAHA...just goes to show how much you know about lifting

  • @leo69er It is actually done quite commonly, my weightlifting coach has us to reverse push presses every now and then

  • ummmmm back straight???? i think not

  • Very good video bro and very good explanation!

  • lol travis ortmayer?!!

  • With all the random, horrible shit that fitness and exercise "experts" put on youtube, it's always refreshing to find somebody who knows what they're talking about and can thoroughly explain it without becoming dull or repetitive. Excellent lift for explosive speed, strength, and power in the entire body, for anyone in any sport. Keep on keepin' on, my man.

  • on the clean do you pull with arms or use momentum?

  • should be renamed to "american high school football "olympic" weightlifting clean and jerk"

  • great vid man

  • damn it, I already know how to do powercleans, I want to know how to do full oly cleans!!!!

  • wtf thats now how u clean at all.. maybe for 100 lbs.. or if your very strong, 200-300, but for high weights, lifters need to throw the bar and get under it as fast as possible, this results in you being under the bar in a squat position

  • you shouldve done it with a heavier weight because your form is off since its so light for you

  • I jerk first and have your mom clean up after

  • im sorry but the amount of dislikes is currently 69. teehee

  • Great explanation. I only wish the split jerk part was more detailed, as this is the hardest motion for me.

  • his head looks so small... his arms are bigger than it

  • @punkrocker828 that's not a bad thing right?

  • @suparpowers i know its actualy pretty sick

  • holy forearms

  • Great vid

  • 4:41

  • great vid!

  • i could beat this guy up with my mind !

  • a tip: when you clean, dip your body inder the bar. makes it so much easier.

DO NOT JUMP. becuase the weight will just plummit on your body and you'll collapse.

  • a tip: when you clean, dip your body inder the bar. makes it so much easier.

  • Imagine if at 4:40 he said Superstar!

  • bs vid

  • THIS DUDE IS FUCKING HUGE!!

  • should you use a belt?

  • thanks i forgot how to clean after i jerk

  • all im gonna say is James Ball rates this guy and that means he must be god!

  • Yo that James guy squated 4 times his body weight at my gym the other day! Insane!!! Think he's on some kind of world tour?

  • @MrSamgrant5 He's a pro Strongman

  • let's call it a constructive feedback - "triple extension" refers to: extending your hips, extending your KNEES and then ankles and not "traps" as mentioned in the video.

    regards,

  • I always jerk first and clean up after.

  • @Rochardzorz It's almost 2 in the morning and you made me lol all loud.

  • @Rochardzorz

    Lmao.

  • @Rochardzorz I jerk on your mom and if she tries to clean it up I backhand her.

  • @AssxDestroyer i lol'd

  • @Rochardzorz my man

  • you can tell he hasn't lifted much olympic because his shoes are brand new

  • @gabarnes5 ORRR...he could have just bought new shoes, Sherlock

  • chicken legs

  • Shocking technique. Don't pay attention to this video

  • "you pull up the bar with the arms as hard as you can"

LoL who is this guy? Fucking bodybuilder trying to teach others how to do an Olympic exersice. Stupidest thing I have ever seen... Go watch someone like Evgeny Chigishev!

  • @TrymmAndrej bodybuilder? Hes a Strongman and only competes in Strongman competitions

  • Jump literally through the roof? I tried this and now my landlord is making me pay for the damages.

  • @JohnsonBully fun

  • the clean is terrible and really wrong and ur jerk too

  • No.

  • ctrl + F4 to skip commercials

  • @asss2grass alt + f4

  • Sorry man, but this is not clean e jerk, this is clean e press or power clean e push press.. the jerk is different

  • ok is his form right or wrong?? im confused everyones saying different shit is this how you do the clean and jerk correctly?

  • @weeky22 no, not at all, this guys has no idea how to lift, if you want to see a good C&J search advocarechampions, some of the best lifters in the country, and thier some of my personal friends as well.

  • @weeky22 he actually did a power clean and not a full clean lol

  • @weeky22 Wrong right from the setup, OL is a sport so why view it as an exercise? So many variables involved in executing these movements. Anybody who posts over youtube almost certainly does not have an OL certificate to teach others.

  • @JasonBodybuilding

ye ur probably right, this is only travis ortmine all amercian strongman champion and professional lifter, what would he possible know.....not like he does this for a living and makes millions....oh wait.....

  • stop calves

  • travis ortmayer is a strongman not an oly lifter, if your looking to clean and jerk dont take this video ver-batem

    good try tho trav

if you want to see great oly lifting look up pyrros dimas or rezazadeh

  • NEVER trust anyone showing you Olympic Lifts when their arms are bigger than their legs. This guy is clueless!

  • Badass. NOW WATCH SOME OF MY STUFF please.

  • very informative and effective video. i applaud you ;)

  • That 'dumbass' is one of the strongest men in North America. I'd say he's done pretty well for himself. Maybe in his training he can get by with less refined technique due to his raw strength. Also, he's not an O-lifting coach, he's a pro strongman. His training isn't geared towards two lifts, he has to train for a variety of different events that test the body in many more ways. His clean technique is actually not that bad considering it's just a part of his training and not the whole.

  • i like to get way lower on the second knee beng to catch the bar with my legs

  • yo no offense dude, but you're clean's wrong

  • @Skotarczyk cuz its to light of a weight for him

  • Excellent tips. I learned several things that i've been doing wrong. Thanks.

  • That's power clean and jerk

  • There's actually a third jerk method...;)

  • If anyone is trying to learn how to do the clean and jerk, look up Olympic coach, Tommy Kono. Don't watch this to learn. You'll only injure yourself, and make a habit of bad technique.

  • pretty good tho he never jump like they do in olympics. good teaching!

  • @FRIDAY13TAURUS Please explain how I am not following my own advice.

  • Great lifting video, one of the best lift explanations I've seen on youtube

  • screwed if u had no thumb hah

  • ok hey guys im 15 in 9th grade planning on going on the weightlifting team and we are about to do jerks i mean i go the clean down i can clean between 115-135 about but what im asking is how much do u thnk i can jerk cuz we are doing in about week and im just trying to think lol

  • dose he fart at 4:40

    if he dose...hahahahahaha

  • @mikoman1989

    lolllllllllllllll!!!

  • You people are hilarious...watch the video, dont watch the video. It doesnt really matter. If you know how to do it correctly why dont you post a video on it instead of being a "arm chair quarterback".

As for me...I take his advice...Professional strongman, world competitor....oh and correctly named the "King of stones" for a reason, because he is one of the strongest men in the world. I would say he knows what he is talking about.

  • @TxFireRescue81 Arguments from authority are bad; good strongmen don't necessarily make good instructors. Also, there's nothing wrong with being an "arm chair quarterback". If the video is bad, which it is, then people can tell from the comments that they should look elsewhere instead of just taking it as gospel.

  • Look i dont have a clue about any of this stuff but i want to start learning so whats the best place to start, learning hang cleans?

  • It seems like a favourite pass-time of Oly lifting snobs to go around and talk shit about people's technique.

  • I like how his legs look like toothpicks.

  • Why is a steongman and powerlifter teaching oly lifting? does he make videos about fixing boeing 747 engines aswell?

  • LIKE if you think hes on R0ID$

    :D

  • im a powerlifter and i got in a habit of starting on my toes

my coach kinda got mad at me.......

@zdo5p he's strong i admit but he doesnt know what he's doing......

  • You aren't supposed to be on your toes to start : FEET FLAT.... iDiOt

  • can't teach it if you don't know it...

  • shite

  • Lol he goes on about triple extension when I see him hardly doing any.

  • lol @ all u idiots. this guy is one of the strongest men in the world

  • @NTStrength maybe, but that doesn't make him an expert in the clean and jerk. What he instructs in this vid is not the technique I've been taught by a fully qualified strength coach who specialises in Olympic lift techniques.

  • @NTStrength troll

  • @NTStrength Strong he may be but his clean technique sucks!

  • Thick fuck!!!!

  • wait a minute i actually watched a bit more is he sweating are you fucken seriouse he could never crossfit

  • @MrRonnierambo Crossfit is a fad for fanboys who will never ever lift the biggest weights in the world. Sorry, but who cares if he cannot "crossfit". Get over your elitist selves.

  • @spudnutsncoffee Their not suppose to, its clearly a higher rep workout which includes an interval of other shit. Good point though but I would count them out on the good fitness level. That stuff is hard if its constant.

  • so if you eat heaps get fat all you have to do is bench press to hide your gut as your pecs will grow and push your shirt out i mean fuck this guy why is there a fat guy with chicken legs teaching fitness

  • @Blundering08 when you do a front squat you work your core more because thats whats keeping your back straight. i prefer the front squat more to back squat because it will improve you balance, altho it is still good to back squat to. you use your hips more in front squatting. but the best lifts for athletes are clean jerk and the snatch because they are explosive

  • dude hahaaaha lok at his legs to the rest of him hahaha

  • Curious what's bad if you dont stick your elbows out on the clean? cause for me when i do the clean i always get my pinky misplaced from under the bar at the shoulder height which causes me to have to give a lil nudge when i standup straight so i can place my pinky underneath the bar so i can do a jerk!

  • get this juice head outa here... cant even rack his elbows correctly

  • "literally through the ceiling"

  • people are dumb, none of you are or have ever been in the olympics... none of you have ever been taught by any olympic coach. so none of you can say this guy's teaching is horrible. one person wrote that you don't use your arms in the clean.... well according to zhang guozheng, an olympic lifting gold medalist you train to use every available muscle in your body. it doesn't make sense to not use your arms.

  • @xelfer9 you're wrong son, I've been taught by an Olympic lifting specialist and his technique is significantly different. Given this guy's size I'd be very interested to see his biggest clean and jerk. At heavy weights, technique becomes ever more important and I suspect he would fail pretty early on as the weight increased.

  • @gregevans If only technique, power and strength were the factor it would be alot better.. Something that not all countries do.

  • @xelfer9 arms are used but any good lifter would know not to describe it as "pulling with your arms" because that delays you from getting your elbows is front of your shoulders. That will cause the bar to crash on your shoulders much harder in the catch, but that is considering if you catch it right which he doesn't.

  • allenati di più,da ciò che vedo non hai una buona tecnica

  • Adidas needs to re-release those Ironwork IIs. Everybody seems to love them and they are sold out everywhere. :(

  • u suck, learn the technique before teaching, stop tell people to kill themselves.

  • @roybaerPL well what is he doing wrong

  • @saintjohnmuscle

    1. he kills his knees

    2. "pull up with your arms as hard as you can" is total fail! you have to use the whole body. and from this follows

    3. by not telling the people to tense their whole body, his body catches all that kinetic energy with the bones and stuff instead of muscles. this dude is gonna break his back or something one day.

  • @rehel34 if it wasn't for this video. i would never have find your favorite videos reference as for doing this type of workout.

  • F5 to skip commercials

  • good basic instructions!

  • @monkeyseevideos you guys should be liable if anyone injures themselves after watching this crap instruction.

  • the clean and jerk lol. normally its jerk then clean ;p

  • this man is a strongman he has no right teaching tech for olympic weightlifting

  • @dawg076 yeah, he's not teaching completely horrible technique... but the man doesn't have NEARLY the mobility to even do the movements correctly

  • @PSUinDC he shouldnt be teaching it bottom line

  • this is hilariously bad technique. this guy might be getting away with this form because he's obviously big and probably pretty strong. it doesn't change the fact that he sucks at these lifts.

1.) at NO point during a clean do you "pull the weight up" with the muscles in your arms. your arms are there to hold the weight.

2.) this is a power clean and jerk. you will almost NEVER see anyone power clean in competition. if you can power clean some amount of weight, you can squat clean more.

  • good basics, but no olympic lift brothaaa

in olympic style you front squat it up.

If you did just 250 pds with your technique, you would fall forward.

  • Agreed, this man has no idea how to properly perform the lift and shoulkd not be instructing. Everyone knows triple extension refers to the sequential extension of the hips, kness and ankles. You do not look up at any stage as this leads to extension of the lumbar. So many things wrong with this.

  • & you dip under to catch the clean. not pull it. you'll strain yourself.

  • first of all, when you come out of the jerk you bring your front foot back first then bring your back one. if you bring your back on first the bar will go backwards. second of all, you don't pull with your arms you pull with your legs. & third of all you need to teach with more weight so that you can do it correctly & not tell people the wrong thing just because it too light.

  • Looks more like a power clean and push press.

  • hey muscle head you suck at teaching

  • i don't want to sound like a douche, but your bending to much at the knees, it should be almost all hips. your form is off and form is strict in oly lifting.

  • His biceps are too big for this... he cant get under the bar proplerly....

  • Search on youtube : Clean and Jerk, this guy does show the proper way, not even 10%

  • "you pull up with the arms" hahah NO! you DO NOT pull the bar with your arms, you pull it with your shoulders, this guy sucks

  • Tough crowd... if it is so bad, don't watch it & then take the time to rip on it. Olympic lifts are complicated movements that take time to perfect. If you are seriously considering getting into it Youtube shouldn't be your only source of information--its just a place to start.

  • @ejd5050 how would i know its bad if i didnt watch it?

  • @351cleveland I don't know what you are trying to say. I am questioning those who took the time to watch the entire video and then took time to detail what he is doing wrong. If the video in question isn't worth your time, as many viewers have espoused, you should figure that out in the first few seconds and leave the page to find one that is worth your time.

  • @ejd5050 I couldn't disagree more with your sentiments. For an information video like this comments can be very helpful. If the information is wrong, then I hold nothing against some one who corrects it. A lot of what he is saying is incorrect, so if some one comes here to learn the clean they won't be doing it correctly. As one of those people who is trying to improve my olympic lifts I have found many of comments helpful. Debate is healthy

  • @emorrison1989 You are, right debate is healthy, yet a fear you missed my point. My overarching contention was aimed at stopping useless comments (e.g. "this is terrible") or those who comment maliciously. You'll notice my second comment ultimately condones the other users that have "corrected" his form ("If the video in question isn't worth your time, as many viewers have espoused...").

  • @ejd5050 Oh yeah? Who are you to tell me what to do or what not to do. You're not God!

  • @obesejim Is there a god?

  • @MidnightMassMurderer you want a slow and controlled first pull to make sure the weight doesnt get out in front of you. u want the bar moving when you come to the second pull but speed at that point is irrelevant. think about your deadlift, were r u stronger? the top of the lift or the bottom? the bottom you just need some momentum then explode. give it a try some time champ.

  • why u guys hatin, hes bigger then any of u guys, and prob more explosive

  • Hard...

  • that form is embarrassing!

  • You can tell he really squats because at 3:11 his knees crack.

  • This guy doesn't have a fucking clue. He should go back to doing his bench presses and dead lifts. He has no credentials to be coaching technique on Olympic Weightlifting.

  • Back straight? Wow.

  • that wasnt even a power clean, not to mention clean with dip. where is the dip?
