Watch Tommy Kono's instructional video if you're really interested in doing the clean and jerk properly.Everyone please like this so that it remains at the top for people interested in doing this lift well. Tommy Kono is a two-time gold medalist in weightlifting and an Olympic weightlifting coach for the US and former coach for other countries as well. If you're going to listen to someone, why not hear it from one of the best?
@skibumwin Figure out how to strengthen the so that you don't get hurt. Resistance bands are good for strengthening the muscles around joints. That's what I was given to strengthen an ankle after an injury.
his form is decent for somebody who doesn't do solely Olifting iow not a specialist. most coaches in Olifting realize you do NOT pull the bar up with your traps. you use the traps to assist pulling you under the bar. watch slo-mo of elite lifters and you see that. and it's technically NOT a jump. jump is from the front of the feet. the hip extension in the clean and the snatch are both from more of the mid foot. many elite lifters don't even rise on the toes at all. good vid though
The weight's too light for travis to even need to bend his knees... It's a power clean anyway, and truthfully unless you're getting into olympic lifting itself you might not really need to learn how to full clean vs power clean anyway, since both are great for developing power.
this video should be renamed as a power clean, but even so, it's not a particularly good example of one. i know that he is a strong man competitor, but weightlifting is a whole other ball game, especially in terms having really good technique from the beginning.
to everyone bashing travis pleez remember tht his technique might not be good it is certainly far better than all the other idiots who run around youtube at least he has some idea about wht he's tlking about
With all the random, horrible shit that fitness and exercise "experts" put on youtube, it's always refreshing to find somebody who knows what they're talking about and can thoroughly explain it without becoming dull or repetitive. Excellent lift for explosive speed, strength, and power in the entire body, for anyone in any sport. Keep on keepin' on, my man.
wtf thats now how u clean at all.. maybe for 100 lbs.. or if your very strong, 200-300, but for high weights, lifters need to throw the bar and get under it as fast as possible, this results in you being under the bar in a squat position
let's call it a constructive feedback - "triple extension" refers to: extending your hips, extending your KNEES and then ankles and not "traps" as mentioned in the video.
"you pull up the bar with the arms as hard as you can"
LoL who is this guy? Fucking bodybuilder trying to teach others how to do an Olympic exersice. Stupidest thing I have ever seen... Go watch someone like Evgeny Chigishev!
@weeky22 no, not at all, this guys has no idea how to lift, if you want to see a good C&J search advocarechampions, some of the best lifters in the country, and thier some of my personal friends as well.
@weeky22 Wrong right from the setup, OL is a sport so why view it as an exercise? So many variables involved in executing these movements. Anybody who posts over youtube almost certainly does not have an OL certificate to teach others.
ye ur probably right, this is only travis ortmine all amercian strongman champion and professional lifter, what would he possible know.....not like he does this for a living and makes millions....oh wait.....
That 'dumbass' is one of the strongest men in North America. I'd say he's done pretty well for himself. Maybe in his training he can get by with less refined technique due to his raw strength. Also, he's not an O-lifting coach, he's a pro strongman. His training isn't geared towards two lifts, he has to train for a variety of different events that test the body in many more ways. His clean technique is actually not that bad considering it's just a part of his training and not the whole.
If anyone is trying to learn how to do the clean and jerk, look up Olympic coach, Tommy Kono. Don't watch this to learn. You'll only injure yourself, and make a habit of bad technique.
ok hey guys im 15 in 9th grade planning on going on the weightlifting team and we are about to do jerks i mean i go the clean down i can clean between 115-135 about but what im asking is how much do u thnk i can jerk cuz we are doing in about week and im just trying to think lol
You people are hilarious...watch the video, dont watch the video. It doesnt really matter. If you know how to do it correctly why dont you post a video on it instead of being a "arm chair quarterback".
As for me...I take his advice...Professional strongman, world competitor....oh and correctly named the "King of stones" for a reason, because he is one of the strongest men in the world. I would say he knows what he is talking about.
@TxFireRescue81 Arguments from authority are bad; good strongmen don't necessarily make good instructors. Also, there's nothing wrong with being an "arm chair quarterback". If the video is bad, which it is, then people can tell from the comments that they should look elsewhere instead of just taking it as gospel.
@NTStrength maybe, but that doesn't make him an expert in the clean and jerk. What he instructs in this vid is not the technique I've been taught by a fully qualified strength coach who specialises in Olympic lift techniques.
@MrRonnierambo Crossfit is a fad for fanboys who will never ever lift the biggest weights in the world. Sorry, but who cares if he cannot "crossfit". Get over your elitist selves.
@spudnutsncoffee Their not suppose to, its clearly a higher rep workout which includes an interval of other shit. Good point though but I would count them out on the good fitness level. That stuff is hard if its constant.
so if you eat heaps get fat all you have to do is bench press to hide your gut as your pecs will grow and push your shirt out i mean fuck this guy why is there a fat guy with chicken legs teaching fitness
@Blundering08 when you do a front squat you work your core more because thats whats keeping your back straight. i prefer the front squat more to back squat because it will improve you balance, altho it is still good to back squat to. you use your hips more in front squatting. but the best lifts for athletes are clean jerk and the snatch because they are explosive
Curious what's bad if you dont stick your elbows out on the clean? cause for me when i do the clean i always get my pinky misplaced from under the bar at the shoulder height which causes me to have to give a lil nudge when i standup straight so i can place my pinky underneath the bar so i can do a jerk!
people are dumb, none of you are or have ever been in the olympics... none of you have ever been taught by any olympic coach. so none of you can say this guy's teaching is horrible. one person wrote that you don't use your arms in the clean.... well according to zhang guozheng, an olympic lifting gold medalist you train to use every available muscle in your body. it doesn't make sense to not use your arms.
@xelfer9 you're wrong son, I've been taught by an Olympic lifting specialist and his technique is significantly different. Given this guy's size I'd be very interested to see his biggest clean and jerk. At heavy weights, technique becomes ever more important and I suspect he would fail pretty early on as the weight increased.
@xelfer9 arms are used but any good lifter would know not to describe it as "pulling with your arms" because that delays you from getting your elbows is front of your shoulders. That will cause the bar to crash on your shoulders much harder in the catch, but that is considering if you catch it right which he doesn't.
2. "pull up with your arms as hard as you can" is total fail! you have to use the whole body. and from this follows
3. by not telling the people to tense their whole body, his body catches all that kinetic energy with the bones and stuff instead of muscles. this dude is gonna break his back or something one day.
this is hilariously bad technique. this guy might be getting away with this form because he's obviously big and probably pretty strong. it doesn't change the fact that he sucks at these lifts.
1.) at NO point during a clean do you "pull the weight up" with the muscles in your arms. your arms are there to hold the weight.
2.) this is a power clean and jerk. you will almost NEVER see anyone power clean in competition. if you can power clean some amount of weight, you can squat clean more.
Agreed, this man has no idea how to properly perform the lift and shoulkd not be instructing. Everyone knows triple extension refers to the sequential extension of the hips, kness and ankles. You do not look up at any stage as this leads to extension of the lumbar. So many things wrong with this.
first of all, when you come out of the jerk you bring your front foot back first then bring your back one. if you bring your back on first the bar will go backwards. second of all, you don't pull with your arms you pull with your legs. & third of all you need to teach with more weight so that you can do it correctly & not tell people the wrong thing just because it too light.
i don't want to sound like a douche, but your bending to much at the knees, it should be almost all hips. your form is off and form is strict in oly lifting.
Tough crowd... if it is so bad, don't watch it & then take the time to rip on it. Olympic lifts are complicated movements that take time to perfect. If you are seriously considering getting into it Youtube shouldn't be your only source of information--its just a place to start.
@351cleveland I don't know what you are trying to say. I am questioning those who took the time to watch the entire video and then took time to detail what he is doing wrong. If the video in question isn't worth your time, as many viewers have espoused, you should figure that out in the first few seconds and leave the page to find one that is worth your time.
@ejd5050 I couldn't disagree more with your sentiments. For an information video like this comments can be very helpful. If the information is wrong, then I hold nothing against some one who corrects it. A lot of what he is saying is incorrect, so if some one comes here to learn the clean they won't be doing it correctly. As one of those people who is trying to improve my olympic lifts I have found many of comments helpful. Debate is healthy
@emorrison1989 You are, right debate is healthy, yet a fear you missed my point. My overarching contention was aimed at stopping useless comments (e.g. "this is terrible") or those who comment maliciously. You'll notice my second comment ultimately condones the other users that have "corrected" his form ("If the video in question isn't worth your time, as many viewers have espoused...").
@MidnightMassMurderer you want a slow and controlled first pull to make sure the weight doesnt get out in front of you. u want the bar moving when you come to the second pull but speed at that point is irrelevant. think about your deadlift, were r u stronger? the top of the lift or the bottom? the bottom you just need some momentum then explode. give it a try some time champ.
This guy doesn't have a fucking clue. He should go back to doing his bench presses and dead lifts. He has no credentials to be coaching technique on Olympic Weightlifting.

this is hilariously bad technique. this guy might be getting away with this form because he's obviously big and probably pretty strong. it doesn't change the fact that he sucks at these lifts.
1.) at NO point during a clean do you "pull the weight up" with the muscles in your arms. your arms are there to hold the weight.
2.) this is a power clean and jerk. you will almost NEVER see anyone power clean in competition. if you can power clean some amount of weight, you can squat clean more.

good basics, but no olympic lift brothaaa
in olympic style you front squat it up.
If you did just 250 pds with your technique, you would fall forward.
HITTHEM31 1 year ago
Agreed, this man has no idea how to properly perform the lift and shoulkd not be instructing. Everyone knows triple extension refers to the sequential extension of the hips, kness and ankles. You do not look up at any stage as this leads to extension of the lumbar. So many things wrong with this.
dehgcye 1 year ago
& you dip under to catch the clean. not pull it. you'll strain yourself.
portugesbaby 1 year ago
first of all, when you come out of the jerk you bring your front foot back first then bring your back one. if you bring your back on first the bar will go backwards. second of all, you don't pull with your arms you pull with your legs. & third of all you need to teach with more weight so that you can do it correctly & not tell people the wrong thing just because it too light.

Looks more like a power clean and push press.

hey muscle head you suck at teaching

i don't want to sound like a douche, but your bending to much at the knees, it should be almost all hips. your form is off and form is strict in oly lifting.

His biceps are too big for this... he cant get under the bar proplerly....

Search on youtube : Clean and Jerk, this guy does show the proper way, not even 10%
masterffp77 1 year ago
"you pull up with the arms" hahah NO! you DO NOT pull the bar with your arms, you pull it with your shoulders, this guy sucks

Tough crowd... if it is so bad, don't watch it & then take the time to rip on it. Olympic lifts are complicated movements that take time to perfect. If you are seriously considering getting into it Youtube shouldn't be your only source of information--its just a place to start.

@ejd5050 how would i know its bad if i didnt watch it?
351cleveland 1 year ago
@351cleveland I don't know what you are trying to say. I am questioning those who took the time to watch the entire video and then took time to detail what he is doing wrong. If the video in question isn't worth your time, as many viewers have espoused, you should figure that out in the first few seconds and leave the page to find one that is worth your time.
ejd5050 1 year ago 14
@ejd5050 I couldn't disagree more with your sentiments. For an information video like this comments can be very helpful. If the information is wrong, then I hold nothing against some one who corrects it. A lot of what he is saying is incorrect, so if some one comes here to learn the clean they won't be doing it correctly. As one of those people who is trying to improve my olympic lifts I have found many of comments helpful. Debate is healthy
emorrison1989 1 year ago
@emorrison1989 You are, right debate is healthy, yet a fear you missed my point. My overarching contention was aimed at stopping useless comments (e.g. "this is terrible") or those who comment maliciously. You'll notice my second comment ultimately condones the other users that have "corrected" his form ("If the video in question isn't worth your time, as many viewers have espoused...").

@ejd5050 Oh yeah? Who are you to tell me what to do or what not to do. You're not God!

@MidnightMassMurderer you want a slow and controlled first pull to make sure the weight doesnt get out in front of you. u want the bar moving when you come to the second pull but speed at that point is irrelevant. think about your deadlift, were r u stronger? the top of the lift or the bottom? the bottom you just need some momentum then explode. give it a try some time champ.

why u guys hatin, hes bigger then any of u guys, and prob more explosive

You can tell he really squats because at 3:11 his knees crack.

This guy doesn't have a fucking clue. He should go back to doing his bench presses and dead lifts. He has no credentials to be coaching technique on Olympic Weightlifting.
