Brilliant concept!!!! I love the panning of the desktop wallpaper as the screen switched from desktop to desktop the most. You really get a feeling of a virtual world. The images moving in a 3D circle away from the screen was great too. This is really revolutionary in GUIs.
Awesome! I actually thought of this idea long time ago but I couldn't code it at the time lol. You simply used the idea that I had and made it even better! I only got to the point where the Desktop will no longer be a 2D plane. Everything would be hovering in a 3D space. Excellent job! (That is...if you are the developer.)
He's not. Sun is the developer (I believe) and you can add the repo for this on your Ubuntu system. I think you can also download the source and compile if you're not on Ubuntu.

I've run looking glass, compiz fusion, and a half-dozen other window managers (or WM-like UIs) on dozens of PCs using many dozens of different OSes, some linux, some windows, some more exotic. I can definitively say that I've never taken 1/2 a day to get files and 1/2 a day to install.

Heya portalcake625: This is the same as I mentioned already by installing it right within Windows, so not exactly sure what you are meaning by your reply.
that was too....COOL omg that was awsome i am definetly getting ubuntu , so can i have that glass affect on ubuntu? thanks for the idea of partitioning the harddrive kojow7 , i wnt have a problem since i have a 110 gb hardrive :P.
The graphical interface in ubantu is fucking awsome, i like vista, i wish someone made a mod for it to look like this. But the lack of drivers for ubantu is stopping me from installing it :/
What lack of drivers are you talking about? There are many ways to use Ubuntu without getting rid of Windows. You can install it as a second partition, so you can boot into Windows or Linux, you can install it right in Windows and run it from within Windows, or you can run it off of a live CD without installing it.
This is called dual-booting. Best Option: Create 2 partitions, then install windows, then linux. Alternate Option: If Windows is already filling entire drive, the installer can shrink the partition to a smaller size, then you can install Ubuntu to the remaining disk. If you choose the second option, it is good to first back up any important files in case a problem happens. It usually won't, but it's best to be safe. Before installing try the live disc to see if it works -though it will be slower
I have yet to find anything in my laptop that does not have a driver for ubuntu. I've got fingerprint, webcam, touchscreen, multitouch touchpad, wireless, video card drivers without a problem. Just grab the windows one and use Wine.
I'm sorry. i was just expressing my opinion on this piece of software. I seriously apologize. I just find ubuntu kinda corny and just for visuals. Now, if you can find me some good midi composition software with vst support..I would consider using it. I am sorry for calling software gay.
If you have 8.04 or newer simply click right button of your mouse the desktop, click Desktop Effects, chooose what you want. You can get more stuff: open terminal, write sudo apt-get install
compizconfig-settings-manager press enter, enter your password and wait
Wow... yeah I have two machines... one with Vista and one with Ubuntu... the Toshiba (Ubuntu) boots up faster (by several seconds) and uses less CPU resources that my Sony (Vista). The Funny part? My Toshiba is from 2005 and my Sony is brand new!!! The Toshiba has only 512 Mb RAM while the Sony has 2 Gb!!!
MS code is bloated, and too expensive. Windows... every version I've ever used has been hot garbage compared to Linux.
Man, I really hope LG3D takes off! It'd be very neat to see these implemented as Java containers in KDE4, and then built as the OpenSolaris desktop. The underlying technology would be amazing.
UBUNTU YOUR ASS, you piece of shit mother fucker from hell. Linux won't save you OLD UGLY DIRTY FAGS that make $1 per hour, and cannot afford actual computers of "todays world" HAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAH I laugh at you all day long and night.
WTF do you mean on that? IBM is on linux too, and they MAKE computers of "today's world", dear Vista faggot.
BTW I TRIED vista and it SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKS AS HEEEEEELLLL! SLOWEST OS avaliable! (maybe win 7 will be slower?) Even notepad can get slower under vista.
I found that Vista is A LOT slower too. At first it was faster, but week after week it kept getting slower. Today I finally bought my Mac and I'm Windows-free running Ubuntu and Mac OS X.
Well I heard OSX gets better after every upgrade, but what about compatibility? I hate the idea of "upgrading" to vista some day, but I can't leave XP because virtually everything runs on it. I know about wine and stuff, but I'm a complete newbie to linux, still learning the very basics.
It's a shame, but I can't get Windows-free yet :(
Hi im trying to start off a linux youtube community and i need all of you to help please check out my channel every subscription counts to me please share ideas cool sofware etc thanks ENJOY and no linux uses a swap drive kinda as ram you can run it on 256mb ram
looking glass goes a lot further than that though, it's an immersive environment, it's like a macrocosm, he could have anything anywhere on a rotational scalable globe in flawless 3d environment. He moves a little bit but not much if you look closely at how the background sometimes gets closer.
Compiz Fusion is getting a plugin like this. Right now you have to get it from git and compile it but it does the same thing. I think the plugin is called freewins or something like that.
I like ubuntu. I currently have UBUNTU studio loaded. It comes bundled with a lot of useful applications like a photo editor that competes well with photo shop. I use xp for gaming and amature home studio recording. Other than that I would completely leave windows. Who needs to buy office when you have open office? Microsoft better watch out.
hi everyone im trying to figure out what linux os i need im so sick of vista and wanta switch over but i dont know the difference between beryl compiz or anything will someone please help out im also running on 512 mb ram so any suggestions of any linux os that are pretty slim will help out thanks
I would recommend Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Ubuntu comes with Gnome Window manager which has the running applications at the bottom and the "start menu" at the to while Kubuntu has the KDE window manager which has a more windows like feel to it with both the open applications and the start menu at the bottom.
thanks ya i ended up figuring it all out like 3 days ago i got ubuntu 8.04 with compiz fusion learning the terminal and installed a dock and a couple other cool programs hahaha i love it screw windows i am duel booting though lol oh and i got my emerald themes to stay ima pretty fast learner but thanks alot for help we need more people like you
I was just like you 2 months ago but then I tried Knoppix, then Debian. Then about 2 weeks ago I tried ubuntu 8.04 with compiz and WOW! if you like eye candy its got it. I thought i could never fully replace windows, but now
now you too can be like Tom Cruise. These damned trickles purported to be genuine advances shit me

@wachuneed there isnt a native version of photoshop for ubuntu that i know of, BUT
There are two ways to get photoshop running in ubuntu.
1. WINE
2. Emulate Windows
WINE should do the trick just fine. To get wine, in ubuntu: Go to the ubuntu software center. Search for WINE. Install.
Photoshop is a .exe so just find where photoshop is, right click, open with WINE.

Heya portalcake625: This is the same as I mentioned already by installing it right within Windows, so not exactly sure what you are meaning by your reply.

The graphical interface in ubantu is fucking awsome, i like vista, i wish someone made a mod for it to look like this. But the lack of drivers for ubantu is stopping me from installing it :/
PADDYL2006 3 years ago
What lack of drivers are you talking about? There are many ways to use Ubuntu without getting rid of Windows. You can install it as a second partition, so you can boot into Windows or Linux, you can install it right in Windows and run it from within Windows, or you can run it off of a live CD without installing it.
Kojow7 3 years ago
how do you do you where you can boot one or the other?
MeZmErIzEtheMiNd 3 years ago

Captnuendo 3 years ago
Don't apologize you pussy. (not that i agree with Ubuntu being gay). That rhymed, kinda.

Baraquiel62 3 years ago
If you have 8.04 or newer simply click right button of your mouse the desktop, click Desktop Effects, chooose what you want. You can get more stuff: open terminal, write sudo apt-get install
compizconfig-settings-manager press enter, enter your password and wait
Joonatanp99 3 years ago 3

hmmmm, ill have to look into this. its free right?? cuz it looks cool as hell.
GibsonSGKing 3 years ago
yeah, 100% free. same with the programs, that are actually in many cases better than windows.
terogweth 3 years ago
cool, im gonna dual boot with this and vista soon. is there anyway to get them to both run off of the same desktop and program folders????
GibsonSGKing 3 years ago
Wow... yeah I have two machines... one with Vista and one with Ubuntu... the Toshiba (Ubuntu) boots up faster (by several seconds) and uses less CPU resources that my Sony (Vista). The Funny part? My Toshiba is from 2005 and my Sony is brand new!!! The Toshiba has only 512 Mb RAM while the Sony has 2 Gb!!!
MS code is bloated, and too expensive. Windows... every version I've ever used has been hot garbage compared to Linux.

hmmm, where have i seen u before lolz
GibsonSGKing 3 years ago
Man, I really hope LG3D takes off! It'd be very neat to see these implemented as Java containers in KDE4, and then built as the OpenSolaris desktop. The underlying technology would be amazing.

Hasta la Vista, M$.
aiklarung 3 years ago
I found that Vista is A LOT slower too. At first it was faster, but week after week it kept getting slower. Today I finally bought my Mac and I'm Windows-free running Ubuntu and Mac OS X.
gangstermailuser 3 years ago
Well I heard OSX gets better after every upgrade, but what about compatibility? I hate the idea of "upgrading" to vista some day, but I can't leave XP because virtually everything runs on it. I know about wine and stuff, but I'm a complete newbie to linux, still learning the very basics.
It's a shame, but I can't get Windows-free yet :(
aiklarung 3 years ago
give it time... i only use windows to lodge my tax returns now after a short time using linux

looking glass goes a lot further than that though, it's an immersive environment, it's like a macrocosm, he could have anything anywhere on a rotational scalable globe in flawless 3d environment. He moves a little bit but not much if you look closely at how the background sometimes gets closer.

Its not Windows you BAD KID! It's Ubuntu, which is much better that Windows Especially Vista
iTangle 3 years ago 3
Compiz Fusion is getting a plugin like this. Right now you have to get it from git and compile it but it does the same thing. I think the plugin is called freewins or something like that.
SoftwareExplorer 3 years ago
I like ubuntu. I currently have UBUNTU studio loaded. It comes bundled with a lot of useful applications like a photo editor that competes well with photo shop. I use xp for gaming and amature home studio recording. Other than that I would completely leave windows. Who needs to buy office when you have open office? Microsoft better watch out.

hi everyone im trying to figure out what linux os i need im so sick of vista and wanta switch over but i dont know the difference between beryl compiz or anything will someone please help out im also running on 512 mb ram so any suggestions of any linux os that are pretty slim will help out thanks
sold13r45 3 years ago
I would recommend Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Ubuntu comes with Gnome Window manager which has the running applications at the bottom and the "start menu" at the to while Kubuntu has the KDE window manager which has a more windows like feel to it with both the open applications and the start menu at the bottom.
kubuntu: kubuntu [dot] org
ubuntu: ubuntu [dot] com

I was just like you 2 months ago but then I tried Knoppix, then Debian. Then about 2 weeks ago I tried ubuntu 8.04 with compiz and WOW! if you like eye candy its got it. I thought i could never fully replace windows, but now
