This reminds me a lot of the Lion King. Main Character is born into a life of glory and prestige, and then tragedy strikes and he becomes overwhelmed with guilt and disappears for a while, and hangs out with lowlives (I love Timon and Pumbaa don't get me wrong), then his old girlfriend tries to bring him back unsuccessfully, then a mysterious stranger convinces him to come back and try to redeem himself.

Smith's character is a version of Lord Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu the sustainer. One of his names is "Bhagavan", and the Joy of Devaki.
