FYI!!!! You never "Dye" your hair! You "color" your hair! It is like nails on a chalk board to a hair stylist to hear the word "Dye". Your hair isn't Dying or being killed, its being "colored"! Nor are you "Plucking" your eyebrows, you are "tweezing" your eyebrows. But please people.......STOP saying "DYE"!!
i'm not sure if someone commented/you found out, but the numbers on developers are the strength. 30 is typically only used if you're using a high lift color or bleach. 40 is (in most places) the strongest, and usually used for bleaching dark colors to blond. there is no reason to use 30 if you're going over your usual color / not going any lighter. 20 or 10 will give you the same results without drying your hair and knocking the keratin out of it.

No offence but animals paid a heavy price for these dye colours in Loreal's or many other laboratories - because "we're worth it?" definitely not a the cost of innocents lives. These stuff is toxic and bad - there's some other natural based hair dye that do not dry up or damage hairs - that do not test on animals. Herbaltint & Logona are some great brands with many colour to choose from

black is permanent and will not fade. and if you condition or wash your hair make sure it is color safe. and if your not sure on a hair cut or color go to a store and try on wigs. that's what I do!
the volume difference (20 or 30) is how much you want the color to lift to deposit the color you want (if that makes any sense?), so 30 is going to lift more than 20 and is actually worse for your hair, so condition, condition, condition!
My natural hair color is black :) I think you should aim for the MR8 shade rather than MR4 because your hair might be SUPER red since it's naturally lighter than mine.

Your technically supposed to change your brows to go with your hair color... not perfectly matching but ya know.. adjust. BUT me personally.. I've only used one shade on my brows.. since I started wearing makeup. It's the perfect shade for me because no matter if I have black, light brown, or red hair it works :P To sum up again, I didn't change it, but usually people do. LOL

I've never bleached my whole head, I just dyed over it LOL no tricks.. I know it seems impossible but I used to dye my hair brown all the time as well. I just leave the dye in longer than usually recommended by the packaging. That's possible the only thing I've ever done different than just dying.
@FLiH69 If you get the dye from Sally Beauty, get a lighter color than you want and 30 volume developer instead of 20. 30 volume will lighten your hair more.

I have an old small section of my hair that was bleach last august to be dyed purple and since it was bleached and processed it doesn't hold color as well as non bleached hair so it fades to a dark blonde (regardless of if I dye my hair dark brown or red) so I have to dye over that as well... and with reds it doesn't hurt to touch up everything so you continuously have the "red glow".

If your hair came out okay than that's fine! It just might cause the dye to fade off faster or appear less.. colorful but if you like your hair then your fine! No worries!

Btw your hair is gorjus, i think you suit a really short bob, like if you cut the other side the same length as your short side
I don't use a lot of product on a daily basis. Just your average shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant, and the occasional deep hair mask. I like using a deep conditioner (either the aussie 3 min treatment or hair nutrition 3 min treatment) about three days before I dye my hair, just to help keep it moisturized and not damaged. I don't have any dryness or any excessive damage. Just the occasional split end every once and a while, but that's from heat.. not the dye.
Loreal hair color are very good. I use to buy these for my younger sister when she dyed it red. I like the chocolate cherry color from loreal feria. Thanks Sam for sharing.
You definitely have to aim higher than what you actually want due to us Asians having dark hair.. But I wouldn't recommend blonde personally since one time when I was younger I wanted medium to light brown and used blonde (thanks to my sister) and I have orange and blonde hair. Not attractive

Omg girl. Your over processing your hair! Color should only be on for 45 min max! Plus put the color on your roots with the 30 vol. and get a 10 vol. developer for your ends. Put it on your ends the last 10 min. 30 vol mean 3 levels of lift and 20 vol means 2 levels of lift. 10 vol deposits the color. Hope this helps.
Hmmm I get the description of the vol's but the dye only says 20 or 30? I learned this technique from a fellow blogger so it probably isn't the... "right" way to do it but it works! Bleaching is the use of bleach to strip your natural hair color down... to basically white... so other colors stick. Very damaging for the most part. Dying is the process of using hair dye.
The 20 vol. dev. lifts the color 1 -2 shades.. the 30 vol. dev lifts the color 2- 3 shades..the higher developer you use the higher the shades it will lift ..like if you are bleaching your hair you would use the 30 or 40 dev. to lift and so say you are blonde and you want to go dark brown... you do not want to use a 30 or 40 developer b/c it wont come out dark brown you would want to use a 10 developer bc 10 only deposits color into ur hair. or maybe even use a 20 vol. developer
you'd actually get best results if you don't plastic wrap your head when coloring. the chemicals need oxygen to oxidize and process at its best. a better option is to use a plastic cap or bag

Steaks will require bleach, no avoiding it... =/ It's the only way they will contrast against your hair. Dying the whole head doesn't always require bleach though.

i didn't understand why it matters which one you put in the bottle first, the hair dye or the creme. can't you just put the dye in and then put in the creme until it reaches 4 oz? the creme will sink into the dye, but the volume of the whole solution still increases. just wondering; i know nothing about dying hair :)
Because the cream needs to be measured out to 2 fl oz (since the bottle is 4 fl oz) if you pour the dye first you will actually end up with too much creme developer because it will since in to the dye (being more dense).
20 lifts hair 2 shades and 30 lifts it up to 3. normally when depositing color you would use a 10..im suprised it says use 20 or 30..i believe i used 30 when i did my hair to get a vibrant red. lol

Does anyone else have issues with color fading using the L'oreal dyes from Sally's?
I love their colors, I just have to touch up more often.
I use their Mega Bowns line (in the color Chocolate) and it fades quite a bit.

Loreal hair color are very good. I use to buy these for my younger sister when she dyed it red. I like the chocolate cherry color from loreal feria. Thanks Sam for sharing.

i used to the perfect 10 clairol hair dye in light golden brown, and i had asian black hair before, now its like borwn at liek some spots.
what color would you recommend to get my hair to a dark brown color?
some places recommended dark blonde.

You definitely have to aim higher than what you actually want due to us Asians having dark hair.. But I wouldn't recommend blonde personally since one time when I was younger I wanted medium to light brown and used blonde (thanks to my sister) and I have orange and blonde hair. Not attractive

Omg girl. Your over processing your hair! Color should only be on for 45 min max! Plus put the color on your roots with the 30 vol. and get a 10 vol. developer for your ends. Put it on your ends the last 10 min. 30 vol mean 3 levels of lift and 20 vol means 2 levels of lift. 10 vol deposits the color. Hope this helps.

Hmmm I get the description of the vol's but the dye only says 20 or 30? I learned this technique from a fellow blogger so it probably isn't the... "right" way to do it but it works! I know all the box dyes say 45 mins or 25 but 1 hour works for me personally lol thanks for the input though. I appreciate the info.

I'm in 9th grade now, and i've been dying my hair since 5th grade..In the last two years, i've been dying it medium brown, but every time i dy it, it gets kind of red, wich isn't something i like..Do you know a way i could prevent that? :) But the red looks good on you! <3

Bleaching is the use of bleach to strip your natural hair color down... to basically white... so other colors stick. Very damaging for the most part. Dying is the process of using hair dye.

The 20 vol. dev. lifts the color 1 -2 shades.. the 30 vol. dev lifts the color 2- 3 shades..the higher developer you use the higher the shades it will lift ..like if you are bleaching your hair you would use the 30 or 40 dev. to lift and so say you are blonde and you want to go dark brown... you do not want to use a 30 or 40 developer b/c it wont come out dark brown you would want to use a 10 developer bc 10 only deposits color into ur hair. or maybe even use a 20 vol. developer

you'd actually get best results if you don't plastic wrap your head when coloring. the chemicals need oxygen to oxidize and process at its best. a better option is to use a plastic cap or bag

I dyed my hair pretty much the same color a few weeks ago but only my blonde roots picked up the color. And the rest of my hair is black now. :/ but this color really does suit you. :D

Steaks will require bleach, no avoiding it... =/ It's the only way they will contrast against your hair. Dying the whole head doesn't always require bleach though.

i didn't understand why it matters which one you put in the bottle first, the hair dye or the creme. can't you just put the dye in and then put in the creme until it reaches 4 oz? the creme will sink into the dye, but the volume of the whole solution still increases. just wondering; i know nothing about dying hair :)

Because the cream needs to be measured out to 2 fl oz (since the bottle is 4 fl oz) if you pour the dye first you will actually end up with too much creme developer because it will since in to the dye (being more dense).

20 lifts hair 2 shades and 30 lifts it up to 3. normally when depositing color you would use a 10..im suprised it says use 20 or 30..i believe i used 30 when i did my hair to get a vibrant red. lol
