You have to be a captain previously before you can join the royal guard or an exceptionally powerful person who exceeds that of a captain.
The royal guard is mostly unknown as some are older than general yammato him self. But you just simply be stronger than any captain can be to be choosen for the royal guard. And isshin's power is far far greater than even the vizard's were. Or any current captain
if you look closely ichigo's original formed zanpakutou is actually just a bigger version of isshin's, the hilt color and the string at the and are the same, as well as the hand gaurd
If he was once a captain he was the 10th devision captain because the one before hitsugaya died - so he faked his own death to live a better live in the living world and to be save that nobody finds him he lost his powers so nobody can detect spiritual energy from him and that he can leave that shinigami stuff behind him....

read the manga, bleach is awesome, basically Ichigo is so strong because his old man was zero squad, if you think about it how else could his power have grown rapidly, his pops technically mastered his zanpakuto, Ichigo didn't, and it would seem they are strongest other than powered up aizen, genryusai, and gin, the way i see it when ichigo learns all the zanpakutou moves his father already knows he'll kill aizen and gin, in the manga he was scared sigh, his pops has way more experience than him

@Slixer That would explain some background of Bleach, why he never caught on quick enough for his wife's death. Maybe he did, but Hollows were probably feasting on the city back then with the possible fact that he wouldnt recognize both his son's and wife's little to none reiatsu. Of course, I think Isshin's explanation of the zanpaktou size is directly proportional to the amount of reiatsu he had to gain back and the amount of time it'd take to gain his strength back.
You know it bothers me that Grand Fisher Arrancar form was completely different at the end of the BLEACH manga volume 3, but in this episode and volume 21 his arrancar form is completely different. If none of you know what I mean read BLEACH volume 3 and get to the ending. Grand Fisher turns into a arrancar
@fuhrerkingbradley Well we havent seen ALL of his abilities, but in the manga (spoilers) he was able to (I am being DEAD serious) sent Aizen flying several miles across Karakura town WITH HIS FINGER! That alone probably makes him one of the physically strongest characters in the series. Plus his zanpaktou, Engetsu, can use the Getsuga Tensho!
so what happens when a shinigami kills a arrancar/espada (same thing) do they do what all hollow do when they are killed, be purified and sent to the soul society or do they just simply die, on top of that if a arrancar kills a normal Hollow with his/her Zanpakutou what happens.

The royal guard is mostly unknown as some are older than general yammato him self. But you just simply be stronger than any captain can be to be choosen for the royal guard. And isshin's power is far far greater than even the vizard's were. Or any current captain

if you look closely ichigo's original formed zanpakutou is actually just a bigger version of isshin's, the hilt color and the string at the and are the same, as well as the hand gaurd

If he was once a captain he was the 10th devision captain because the one before hitsugaya died - so he faked his own death to live a better live in the living world and to be save that nobody finds him he lost his powers so nobody can detect spiritual energy from him and that he can leave that shinigami stuff behind him....

read the manga, bleach is awesome, basically Ichigo is so strong because his old man was zero squad, if you think about it how else could his power have grown rapidly, his pops technically mastered his zanpakuto, Ichigo didn't, and it would seem they are strongest other than powered up aizen, genryusai, and gin, the way i see it when ichigo learns all the zanpakutou moves his father already knows he'll kill aizen and gin, in the manga he was scared sigh, his pops has way more experience than him

@TheSonnetPrince there is no zero squad, Yamamoto Genryuusai is the strongest and leader of the 13 squads + the leader of the strongest squad obviously, which is squad 1.. as for isshin's history its hard to say, there's alot of speculation going on tho.. like a member of the royal guard.. former captain, Yamamoto son/grandson++.. but im pritty sure the series will let us know eventualy, we'll just have to wait and see xD

@TheSonnetPrince as for ichigo's powers, since isshin was married to a normal person.. his own powers was hidden inside him, but combined with rukia's they awakened eventualy, and thats why he's "overflowing" with power xD so its a combination of 2 spirutal presence that make's him so strong, but strongest? might be, we havnt seen Ukitake Jyuushiro's bankai yet, or Yamamoto Genryuusai's either yet, even Zaraki Kenpachi might learn some move's eventualy xD but who know's tho, so hard to tell

@BloodyWings4 as far as i know there is no zero squad, and the most likely situation for isshin is that he started in squad 4(hence the clinic/hospital he owns) then after reaching the rank of vice captain filled the then vacant squad 10 captain seat

His smile is very creepy, and great though, and also [HUGE EPIC SPOILER, DONT READ IF YOU ARE GOING TO FLAME ME] he was playing with ichigo, using his bankai. Ichigo was just overpowered by him.

@TheSonnetPrince it´s never said h´ was zero squad the only member of squad zero we know for sure is the captain of division twelve before Urahara. I guess more he was leader of devision ten before Toshirou, because toshiro is a shinigami for about 40years, means if he´s even captain for 10 years it would be impressive. Cause we know all captains of 100 years before storyline except division ten and eleven but we know that Zaraki got cpt there. so he probably was 10th squads Captain

@Slixer As no-one in the Gotei 13 had heard of the name "Kurosaki" when Ichigo invaded Soul Society, Isshin only left Soul Society 20 years ago, and Shinji did not recognize Isshin's spiritual energy, Isshin must have been part of something outside of the Gotei 13, leaving the zero squad, Royal Guard, as the only option.

@turtleshocker42 It was said He Lost his powers roughly 20 years prior to the story, that doesn't mean he couldn't have left Soul Society much sooner, Also Yamamoto would have known about him regardless since Squad Zero is made of Captains considered strong enough, while he could have merely changed his name it hasn't been confirmed, and we all know they like to give us the middle finger when it comes to the expected.

@Slixer That would explain some background of Bleach, why he never caught on quick enough for his wife's death. Maybe he did, but Hollows were probably feasting on the city back then with the possible fact that he wouldnt recognize both his son's and wife's little to none reiatsu. Of course, I think Isshin's explanation of the zanpaktou size is directly proportional to the amount of reiatsu he had to gain back and the amount of time it'd take to gain his strength back.

You know it bothers me that Grand Fisher Arrancar form was completely different at the end of the BLEACH manga volume 3, but in this episode and volume 21 his arrancar form is completely different. @fuhrerkingbradley Well we havent seen ALL of his abilities, but in the manga (spoilers) he was able to (I am being DEAD serious) sent Aizen flying several miles across Karakura town WITH HIS FINGER! That alone probably makes him one of the physically strongest characters in the series. Plus his zanpaktou, Engetsu, can use the Getsuga Tensho!

so what happens when a shinigami kills a arrancar/espada (same thing) do they do what all hollow do when they are killed, be purified and sent to the soul society or do they just simply die, on top of that if a arrancar kills a normal Hollow with his/her Zanpakutou what happens.
