For all those commenting that Dennis is showing off. Why the hell is it, when a drummer has the ability to sretch the norm he's considered a showoff? Screw you! Why the hell should he not explore what's possible rhythmically? If Virgil Donati had this same mindset and never thought beyond that, we would never have witnessed the incredible things he's done on the kit. As a drummer it's extremely interesting how he play's around with this ackward track. Limited thinking= limited drumming.

I tried being like Dennis Chambers a few times. I blindfolded myself and then started drumming and you REALLY feel the rhythm that way.... However, I dont see how is chops are still that good with his eyes closed. This guy is truely a living legend

There are two different Dennis Chambers to me: one that is full of groove and pocket playing, then the other that over-rides a song with pointless fills and solos. This video is a perfect example; he lays down a nice groove then completely ruins it with over embellishment in this fills.

I remember being totally blown away by this when it came out. Doesn't feel like it was that long ago, but I guess it was! This guy totally changed the way I play.... in that I stole a bunch of his licks (not the hard ones, of course - just the ones that are physically possible for a human to play).

Chamber's knows he can play a groove. You have to look outside of what is the definition of soloing from the western perspective, his influences are vast and include easter music which is polyrhythmic as well as even afro/cuban which is the same. To play outside of what is predicitible helps to create new styles, and influences other musicians as well as inspires creativity.

Oh for sure man I agree with you. I admire him for being able to play so accurately 'off-time' with those poly rhythm solos...I'm just a big fan of a solid groove I guess. I like solos to fit in nicely with everyone else (unless you are the only one playing)..Chambers is still the man of course :D. Personally I would just like to see these more talented drummers put on a display with some more basic patterns, keeping the drums at the root of everything, but still in their style

it's not that he is trying to "show off" or make a solo out of a groove, he's simply using linear techniques in order to the listener interested, would you rather listen to some rock drummer crack the snare on 2 and 4 the whole song? no way. chambers is unique because he finds ways to make the listener completely lose where the beat is, yet somehow ends up back on 1 after a four bar phrase. he's truly gifted

It's not about playing everything in the old predictable 4/4. As a drummer that's usually the first aspect to be mastered. The excitement in drumming is being able to go outside the bar line, to create the illusion of bending time etc. Drummers are not held to some limited rhythmic box.
