Let me get this straight this is a American plane company right. Not a Asian one. Right. It's purpose is to service American's right. Is it not common knowledge that American's are big people on average then why don't they make plane seating to reflect that reality (no matter what you position on being overweight or not). I'm pretty sure the plane companies know that a very large portion of the travelers on their flights will be big people since they are servicing American's on a American plane.
@shojingod I love how they utilized the by-product of them being cheap on seating sizes to alienate all passengers but in the process forking the blame on the heavy set while all the time knowing that 68% of American's are overweight and obese. Let''s not make a product that services our majority of our customers in the area we service. southwest & klm tried to do that with my sister several times when she flies international. They tried to tell her she needed to buy two tickets. She didnt and got in a heated argument with the pilot & flightattendant. They were rude.

Unless someone is fat due to a genetic defect (a very small percentage of the fat/obese population), they can easily obtain an acceptable figure with a halfway-descent amount of effort. So if they make, let's say, 5 rows of 2 larger seats instead of 5 rows of 3 normal seats, they might end up losing money because they cannot have as many people on board. Fly Delta. Seriously. They'll give someone an extender & make sure you're comfortable. I'm heavier & they've done it every single time I needed it. Each plane is different. Some, the belts won't reach, some do, but when I'm on those dinky planes, I make SURE I have a window seat & scrunch as close to it as I can. It always helps. Nothing is ever wrong w/a random act of consideration like that. It's nobody else's fault I'm heavier, they're MY genes, & I never, ever wanna overflow on anyone else.
I'm not the kind of guy to ever been mean to anyone. But I've flown 6 times in my life. All but one of those I had a passenger next to me who was so heavy that they came into my seat. How is that my problem? I should be uncomfortable because someone else is overweight?
@kenyoung1981 I've flown on plenty of flights with tall skinny people beside me that were came over into my seating area also, taking up the majority of the feet room with their long legs and pushing into my side of the arm rest with their lanky elbows, so it's not just fat people that can cause this issue
Well, yes that is definitely possible. But the difference is tall people can't get any shorter. Granted, there are people in this country who can't lose weight due to medical issues, and they have my sympathies. But the amount of people to have medical issues is way more than the actual number.

I weigh 435 lbs and I love to watch Kevin Smith's movies. But I disagree with himon this. Airlines airlines and other things like theaters shoulden't have to make allowances just because we are fat. Personally I don't don't fly and I go to theaters that have small seats because I know I can't fit comfortably. It never seems to occ ur to be people that there solution isn't bigger seats but smaller asses. Just lose the weight and the problem doesn't occur.

Although I'm able to fit in the seat, I have 0 leg room and if the plane were to make a jolt, my kneecaps would shatter. I have to try and get a very front row seat months ahead of my flight or else Im stuck in pure hell. The airlines make the seats as small as possible to fit more people. Smaller seats = more seats. more seats= more people. more people = more money. Pretty simple really....

im 6'3" and even if i was skin and bones and weighed 200 pounds my hips would be squeezed by both arm rests and thats not even factoring in shoulder width which can be much wider. sorry but the simple facts are airline seats are a bit on the small side and definately dont take body size into thought and im not talking about just being fat. if youre big boned and i mean big boned not fat southwest seats will be a tight fit. watch cbs airline seats to small video
@gillotte This is the thing I've been saying. I have almost NO fat on me, have a 34" waist, but because I am unusually broad shouldered, I still encroach into the next seat from the chest up. The seats border on being too small for NORMAL sized people.

@ConnDevi88 He wasn't denied, he had purchased tickets with his wife and Jason Mewes for a Virgin flight and had planned to use a concierge service to try and prevent people from taking pictures and whatnot of him by getting to be last on the plane. The Virgin flight had closed their doors as they were approaching their gate and refused to reopen them, despite Mewes literally yelling "DON'T CLOSE THE DOOR" and running, and their use of the concierge service.

HIs issue was always that the guidelines posted on the website weren't followed. He didn't get a straight answer from any of the officials. He fit every one of their guidelines (seatbelt without extender, armrests down) and was still ejected for something he was never given a rational reason for. It's not about being outside their guidelines, it's about hidden bullshit rules. Southwest never copped to that.

@LordSither1 when I went to the Harry Potter theme park (which was a huge disappointment) we had to wait in line for 90 freaking minutes(too damn long for a short ride),and there was this one guy in line with us,and he was overweight. he waited in line for 90 minutes and when he finally got in his seat,and just as it was about to go,they stopped it and told him he was too big for the seat and had to get off,even though it looked like he fit in the seat fine.

Fly Delta. Seriously. They'll give someone an extender & make sure you're comfortable. I'm heavier & they've done it every single time I needed it. Each plane is different. Some, the belts won't reach, some do, but when I'm on those dinky planes, I make SURE I have a window seat & scrunch as close to it as I can. It always helps. Nothing is ever wrong w/a random act of consideration like that. It's nobody else's fault I'm heavier, they're MY genes, & I never, ever wanna overflow on anyone else.

I weigh 435 lbs and I love to watch Kevin Smith's movies. But I disagree with himon this. Airlines airlines and other things like theaters shoulden't have to make allowances just because we are fat. Personally I don't don't fly and I go to theaters that have small seats because I know I can't fit comfortably. It never seems to occ ur to be people that there solution isn't bigger seats but smaller asses. Just lose the weight and the problem doesn't occur.

The Virgin flight had closed their doors as they were approaching their gate and refused to reopen them, despite Mewes literally yelling "DON'T CLOSE THE DOOR" and running, and their use of the concierge service.

HIs issue was always that the guidelines posted on the website weren't followed. He didn't get a straight answer from any of the officials. He fit every one of their guidelines (seatbelt without extender, armrests down) and was still ejected for something he was never given a rational reason for. I think its fair enough that obese people should pay for two seats if they don't fit the seat. (They should also show some self control and not overeat).

@LordSither1 when I went to the Harry Potter theme park (which was a huge disappointment) we had to wait in line for 90 freaking minutes(too damn long for a short ride),and there was this one guy in line with us,and he was overweight. he waited in line for 90 minutes and when he finally got in his seat,and just as it was about to go,they stopped it and told him he was too big for the seat and had to get off,even though it looked like he fit in the seat fine.

@sshatchell You obviously have not had to sit on a 9 hour plane flight with a quarter of your already tiny space, consumed by the flesh of some ham beast. If your ass takes up a %110 of a seat, you need to buy two seats, or invest in road trips.

@sshatchell, I suggest you look up Body Mass Index. Yes, Kevin Smith is obese. If that ogre Kevin Smith doesn't look huge to you, then you had better get your eyes checked. Maybe you live around many fat people, so your idea of what's normal is all messed up. I am not going to accomodate to suit irresponsible, lazy people who don't know how to eat properly or exercise.
