I'm in Manila now and have been searching and have not seen one yet or they are well hidden. Every 2 stroke I look at has the big smoke cloud behind it. They are all 4 strokes or regular 2 strokes. Is there only a certain area these modified 2 strokes linger?
rbkhyvc , unfortunately Envirofit has retrofitted very few of the two-stroke tricycles. The organization has become very active in producing cheap, efficient stoves for India and other countries where many people cook indoors with unvented wood stoves. I don't know if the project in The Philippines has been abandoned entirely, but it's possible. Why don't you ask some of the taxi drivers if they could point out one of the converted taxis. Please let me know what they say about Envirofit.
@rbkhyvc , Envirofit worked in Vigan, Ilocos Sur and Puerta Princesa, Palawan. I think they may have abandoned the project before getting to Manila, and now Envirofit seems to be concentrating solely on the stove project. Indoor pollution from crude wood stoves in blamed on millions of Illnesses and deaths in under-developed areas of the World, and Envirofit's highly efficient but cheap stoves drastically cut pollution while reducing the amount of wood needed for cooking. genetuck
Please, make a set for the old Simson 2 T-Engines. There are many diffrent bikes at the streets and most of them using the same type of engine. So i think its worth the effort.
This is terrific! i'm just wondering that since the engines weren't designed for oil injection if they experience any piston seizure? also, perhaps a better way would be to license the BRP e-tec design, thereby eliminating the need for an air compressor.
The oil is not injected. It is sprayed into air which is inducted into the lower end of the motor. That's like a conventional 2-stroke except that the air does not go through a carb and the oil is not diluted by gasoline. E-tec technology requires extremely high-pressure fuel pumps. The Orbital system injects the gasoline with compressed air, breaking up the fuel into 8-micron droplets, smaller than E-tec. The fuel burns more efficiently, and lubrication of the motor actually is improved.
Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. Are there any plans to adapt this to any other 2 strokes, such as the 1970's big twin and triple 2 strokes? You have a paying customer here if you do ;-)
I think the cost is now up to $300 or $350 US. A new four stroke engine costs much more than that. The advantage is that the Taxi owner can keep his old engine but it's now getting better fuel mileage than a four stroke, with more power. Also, if he got a new four stroke it is likely his old two stroke would probably be put to some use, continuing the pollution.
No, Envirofit is not making it available in America. Of course there are very few bikes in the US that could use it. The kits are designed for the Yamaha RS100, Kawasaki HD III, and Suzuki 125 X4, all of which were discontinued in the US in the early 80's because of enviromental rules.
joaorp the crankshaft is lubricated because the oil comes through the air intake and due to the fact that oil is heavier than air only a very very small percentage of the oil enters the combustion chamber.
The Envirofit kit includes an oil pump to supply oil to the crankcase. So the crankshaft gets oil, and it's not diluted by gasoline as it is in the original engine. Also, please understand that it is not pollution from the oil that is the problem with two-strokes. It is the unburned gasoline that escapes out the exhaust pipe into the air we breathe that is the problem.
Envirofit has apparently scored not only a huge technological breakthrough, but a practical, inexpensive cure to a problem that threatens millions of lives.
Deanna, INDOOR pollution also causes hundreds of thousands of premature deaths each year, mainly from stoves burning wood or dung. At Envirofit's website you can read about their inexpensive solution to that problem.
I'm surprised to hear that the U.S. receives air pollution from Asia. How discouraging to learn there are a million plus ill-equipped motorcycle taxis that need conversion in order to clean up Asia's bad air & to lessen the effect in other parts of the world. Hopefully, Envirofit will receive the necessary funds to speed up their good efforts. Thanks for your informative video.
