To clarify for all - Sammy Hagar wrote it. It was on a live album in 1978. Then he released a studio version of it, which reached #36 in the UK in 1980 but didn't really do anything elsewhere. Then Rick did his and had a massive hit. The end.
Ohh yeah--Rick rocks, got the song of of working class dog, had a les paul gold top and a 1972 super lead Marshall, with a 4-12 loaded with greenbacks, 1981, Loaded was the band--man chicks love marshalls and sweat, we played this song loud and proud--now at 52 i have an Orange AD-15 and a 2-12 bottom, scaled down a bit, but my 91 paul standard still does the job, but man i love the 4 -12's, Sammy likes Ricks version better than his, they both rock to the 9's--great stuff!
Yes, this song was written by Sammy, and he recorded it early on but it never really appeared on anything but a live album, until he finally released the old recording in recent years. Sammy's version rocks a little more, but mainly the same.
Ooops, slight error in what I said. It did appear on Sammy's 1978 "All Night Long" live album, and then he did put the studio version on his 1982 "Rematch" album (kind of a best of set). Then it is on the newer Essential Red collection CD.

I really wish he would sing the original lyric ("all the rest is just bullshit, honey"), but what can you do? Cool song that he made popular.

Did Sammy Hagar write this song for Rick? I think I remember Rick mentioning that. It definitely has a Sammy kinda sound to it. It rocks.
