  • He used various 4 letter words...basically signified the sentiment that if you could spell a 4 letter word, you were good enough to be shipped off to vietnam

  • what's that spell ? i can't hear

  • This is the Original Version - When I was with E-Co 75th Rangers in Tan An in 1969 We all played it ... Kept up morale the Dinks thought we were all nuts... Go Go Go Country Joe...

  • This the Original version, Before Woodstock.

  • To ban this song....Is the very bastardizeation of freedom....and the repression of exactly what we`re fighting for. We even fight for the right that Jane Fonda exercised in Hanoi. The right to speak out, even against American policy. We don`t go to prison for dissagreeing. Dialogue open, real freedom prevails. History holds real focus.

  • No-One loved this song more than the Vietnam Vets in the hospitals after their ordeal with Americas attempt to police and stabilize a Commie presence. A sense of humor and a fix on irony. What have we learned from history, & the past..? Where do we go from here? What about the notion of non interference..? Please keep this dialogue clean and positive. Speak from experience!

  • @docambra I remember a bunch of us singing it on the school bus on the way home from school, possibly every day, for a while. As I wasn't into psych & anti-war stuff back then, I'd never heard the song before. I think it was shortly after that that I heard the Woodstock soundtrack for the first time. Probably `71 or `72. Sadly, at the time, I was more into bubblegum: "Chewy, Chewy", "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy", etc.. Now, I wish I could go back and scoop up as many psych records as I can find!!

  • This is the studio/album version. Wether or not you agree with the message of the song, it's a great song with powerful lyrics ;)

  • This was the original broadcasted and recorded version. Censors wouldn't let the other one broadcast, even over AFRN. The other version was made popular due to Woodstock.

Our old camp commander banned the song period. When he left, the new one allowed it to be played.

  • @sm9847 This version was done first, Joe only changed Fish to Fuck for the Woodstock show.

  • Replace "Vietnam" with "Iraq and Iran" and "red/commie" with "Muslim" and you have our current wars.

  • @WoodRatGirl I didn't say that I am referring to what many of the war supporters believe.

  • @imanerd36

Well maybe you should of worded it better.

  • The album is called "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die". It featured "The Bomb Song" and "The Acid Commercial". I think it's out of print.

  • I remember back in 1972 Listening to KDAY 106 AM and hearing this song.

    Then in 1978 Disco Came

    Very Sad.

  • Yeah, but we killed disco, didn't we?

  • @slimfchance1 Did we? It's now called, Trance, or Acid, or Electronica. Same mind nuimbing stupid beat, just faster and louder and no real music involved.

  • I like how this stupid song is still boiling blood on both sides this far down the time line.

  • This is the studio version.

  • did you know the first time it starts counting to 3,

it says WAKA in between? :)

  • @airsoft808 That's the background singer(s), they're using an old style of singing from the `20's that was done by people like, Rudy Vallee, then remade popular again in the `70's by The New Vaudeville Band. They're saying, "Doo waka doo waka doo waka doo". Later in the choruses, you can hear them singing, "Psychedelic, psychedelic", instead.

  • GIMME AN F!

    GIMME A U!

    GIMME A C!

    GIMME A K!

    WHATS THAT SPELL?

-FUCK!!! (he did this when he played a show in redwood city).

  • and woodstock

  • he did that for wood stock dumbass.

  • @hardrockerofsoccer THAT'S funny!! I didn't know he played country music!! Everything I ever heard him do was rock, psych or blues!!

  • lolcaramelz views are his own, but I find them absolutely disgusting to the foundations of our entire country. People like you should be ashamed, sir, you undermine freedom of rights, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness when you speak like that.

  • Pursuit of happiness and freedom rights... Such things are not possible on a large scale in a 100 % capitalistic economy.

Some might be able to work their way from the bottom to the top of society, but that are the lucky few.

Without equality, there is no freedom for the non-that-wealthy part of society.

  • oh no, fascism?!?!?! we cant have that! we HEVE to have a democracy! this here's amurica.

  • @cbyrne66

    Lulz

Democracy is certaintly effective at keeping the general uneducated population sedated. Is it an efficient form of government? No.

Are Republics effective forms of government? No. Even with one party attaining a supermajority in Congress and having the Presidency nothing could be passed.

Look how much grater Rome was as an Empire rather than a check and balance Republic.

  • @tjkjr1992

There is no such thing as true freedom int his country, only license.

Unless you call the freedom to exploit an economic system until it crashes freedom, or the freedom to abort a pregancy, or the pursuit of happiness(wealth). I'm not a left winger at all, quite the opposite, but there is no such thing as a truly free society. Even if we are free from government interference that gives us the liberty to oppress others.

  • "Only immature kids, who have no better comebacks say "no u". "

    no u

  • Well aren't you the cream of the crop.

  • "that last comment is from a real asshole--now that we are in another viet nam--started by lies and our sons and daughters come home in a box...

HAHA no. Youy fight for the wealthy corporations profits and for political gain of politicians. But what the hell do I care, if your dead your dead. Whether it be for "freedom" or for Corporate Masters I could care less.

  • They should have dropped a bomb on Woodstock and ended half the problems we have today, caused by that fucknut generation.

  • Blame capitalism!

  • yes, this is off their second album, 'I Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die' this segues into 'Who Am I' which then goes into 'Eastern Jam' - their finest piece of music, I reckon.

  • Yeah, This is the best person. I always laugh when I hear whoever it is that says "give me an 'h'" it sounds like hes about to kill someone, lol.

  • This is the best version, what a great song!

  • yeah, I think it is the one that was on e the "commercial" second album!....very safe...very clean....life was good then...I think???

  • i believe this is the edited version

  • Thanks for posting this. Some people call this the cleaned-up version of what they did at Woodstock, but this came first. Also, Country Joe did this solo at WS.

  • Actually, it is a "cleaned-up" version, i'm pretty sure - considering that they wewre releasing on Vanguard, which was owned by Lawrence Welk, i doubt they could have gotten away with the real version.

The Rag was originally released on an EP some time earlier, BTW.

  • This is the original studio version of "The Fish Cheer/I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" by Country Joe And The Fish. It's from the LP "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die" which, I believe, is their second album. This is my personal favorite of theirs, song and version.

  • Thanks :)

  • @Jeppedenanden Yes, it's the original version. Why you follow it with 4:00 of dead air, I don't know.
