In the 1900's there was a popular song 'The Golden Dustman' - someone who made an existence picking over a mountain of refuse. I dare say there were quite a few in Victorian Britain who lived like this!
My old man's a dustman, He wears a dustman's hat. He bought 5000 tickets to see a football match, Fatty passed to skinny, And skinny passed it back, Where was the goalie when the ball was in the net? Half way down the football pitch with trousers round his neck! Singing umpa loompa stick it up your jumper! Rule Britannia, marmalade and jam! We through sausages at my old man! HEY!
Kids in the 1950s used to sing a version that went: My old man's a dustmam He wears a dustman's hat He killed five thousand Germans Well what do you think of that? One lay here, one lay there, One lay round the corner. One poor soul with a bullet up his hole Crying out for water. Water, water, water come at last, I don't want your water so stick it up your a***.
Even those in the 70's, I remember this version while I wa at school. then there were the songs abou three german officers crossed the line and came across a chieftan tank etc...
I bought this 45rpm record when I was 13 years old. I met Mr. Donnegan in 1973 or so where he was manager of floor shows at Butzbach Germany's NCO Club. I told him I bought his record and we had quite a conversation. I still have the record and the memory. The flip side was 'The Golden Vanity'. Today a dustman is called (USA) because of political correctness a 'sanitary technician' and a weather reporter a 'meteorologist'. Isn't that something how history can be forgotten.

I really don't know who first performed this song, but I think that it was around for years before Lonnie Donnegon recorded that album.
