Civ IV with mods and modmods was awesome, and Civ V will even beat that greatness in a few months when major mods have been released.

IMO, the newer Civ games pale in comparison to the older ones. Civ 1-3, spin-offs included, were excellent trade/exploration/governing/di­plomacy games, with a great amount of attention paid to graphics and soundtracks.

The newer games might as well be multiplayer-only, since that's the only way you're going to have any fun with the dumbed-down games...

To everyone saying "Oh, the scale is horrible". You are all idiots. This isn't an RTS. Scale doesn't mean anything. It's all representation. It's like a table-top game. You don't play Axis and Allies and say "This is completely unrealistic! This plastic soldier is larger than this plastic tank!" You don't play Risk and say "This is completely unrealistic! This game must not have been tested at all when released. I've played extensively all Civ games (and the original Colonization). I played this game several times. Even at easiest, when the Independence war came, the Army I was facing could teabag the whole world, it was absolutely impossible. Plus, was playing the French, had treaties with all Indian nations (in the original colonization, Indians helped you). Here, they never left their tents.

Clearly, no testing.

I'm talking original Colonization. In the original one (God, if 94 your year of birth, I was playing this game when you were one year old), when Revolution came, the Indians could help you and they supplied very good and very useful auxiliary troops. That's why playing the French was cool. In this "new" one, even though I had military alliances with all the Indian Nations, they just watched me get smashed by the Motherland without lifting a finger.

I played the original Colonization on DOS. That was some awesome shit right there :P This is cool aswell, but I personally like the original version better. But people that havent layed it on DOS, give this a try. Its worth it ;)

That's how Civ units are. That represents a number of soldiers in one unit. It would be very dificult to make game that can show entire world with 1:1 ratio. Think about the hardware req.

Also, resources are too enlarged so that you can spot them. If you like building civilizations trough history I recommend Civilization series. Civilization IV: with Beyond The Sword expansion. They're also fun playing online versus your buddies and a couple of AI-s.

I would say buy it if there are not any other games that interest you as much at the time. Civ 4 Has more pure content and ways to win than this. Alhtough it does make since because the you win in civ 4 colinization is great because it is realistic with the king getting a cut of your money to then lead to independence in the new world.

As for Civ IV : Colonization specifically, I really like how Founding Fathers of different categories can be recruited with different points (trade, exploration etc. and always some political points). Nothing aginst the liberty bells, just the new system is cool in it's own right.

Ya know, a similar system should be incorportaed into Civ V, if it'll be made - instead of liberty bells you have culture points and instead of the FFs, cultural wonders. Whatcha think?

I enjoy the game to some extent. IMHO, the game's mechanics are "broken". Instead of letting you do whatever you want á la Civ (and basically any other strategy game), you are punished whenever you try to do something that you're not "supposed" to do (trade too much, train too many soldiers etc).

Trading in this game is a lot of fun initially, but the punishments quickly take away the fun. They could've spent their time making the AI more clever and making the game more interesting overall.

I have no idea what is so fun about Colonization. The only reason I made it so far into the game as I did is becuse it was similar to Civilization.

I would choose Civilization over Colonization anytime, it really is a superior game in my opinion.

I don't think however that the total war series is superior to the civilization series and vice versa. I play them according to my mood as stated before. Rome is really awsome.

When I play Civ, I concentrate on quelming riots, growing an industrial base and keeping a technological edge over my neighbours.

When I play Col, I gather up colonists, convert natives and most importantly trade trade trade! ;D
