My granpa was the Duvalier regime's lawyer at the UN. Like many Haitians, we were Duvalierists as a matter of survival. Under a dictatorship it is either you are with it or against it. Being against could mean death! Yes Haiti needs a strong man or woman but you may not get DEMOCRACY in return. Which one would you choose?

@mearder The people of Haiti have always loved Baby Doc, even when he was exiled out of the country in 1986. The one they hated was his wife and her family for their creed, corruption and mismanagement of donated funds to Haiti's poor.

Baby Doc knew about their dealings, but was unwilling to prevent it, she dominated him in every aspects. Sadly, since his departure Haiti as in indeed gotten worse, not better.

Yes, you do have stability under any dictatorships because people are oppressed. It is a matter of life & death. For the Bennett Family, their wealth came from their family business. The Black men are the ones who always go for the white women or the light skinned women because most believe that they are the most beautiful women.

@md991free That is not true, Michelle Bennett came to the picture at the end of the regime. Duvalier was never a true politician, he was only 19 when he was made President for life. Michelle did the one thing best like many wives of a powerful leader was SHE LOOKED DAMN GOOD & SHE SHOWED HIS WEALTH. Yes she was an ambitious woman afterall it wasn't her that Duvalier wanted it was her younger sister. Regarless of all that the regime had 35 years to change the country & they did nothing

Better, like in any true democracy, whatever the Head of State buys with the people's moneis belong to the people which means they both have to return all of the cars, jewelries etc....back to the Haitian State! I find it strange people claim to love Duvalier. try to ask Duvalier whether he loves you back better Haiti after all he had the opportunity for 15years to make Haiti the true pearl of the Caribbean!

My mother is a light skinned Haitian & so are many other members of my family past & present. I was just pointing out the facts that while most dark skinned politicians in Haiti would manipulitate the truth about the light skinned bourgoisie, they always end up marrying these same light skinned elites they claim are the problems & supposedly loath so much in Haiti.

@jermens1 Yes it's true but only if you knew Haiti before the Duvaliers when Haiti was the PEARL OF THE CARIBBEAN. The Cathedral, The National Palace, the Palace of Justice, BiCentennaire, Place Petion, Peligre, Jacmel, Jeremie, Les Cayes, Cap-Haitien etc.The country was moving right after we had done finishing paying France in the 40's. Even under Magloire Haiti was moving then came Duvalier who loathed the elite & started killing & closing our ports. Haiti has not since recovered!

@jermens1 Prior to the Duvaliers Haiti was not receiving subsidies from the US or any other countries for that matter. All we had & built were done with our monies. Ever since Duvaliers, being an elite or a bourgois in Haiti is a DIRTY WORD! Poor people DON"T BUILD COUNTRIES. There are many great things that are being built now in Haiti & they are not done by poor people, the Oasis Hotel & many more. The black politicians all they do is stealing millions & run into exile. @satyricon55 Obviously you really don't understand what I wrote. I don't feel bad about Duvalier returning. In comparaison to Aristide & Preval, I prefer Duvalier a million times. Unlike his father Papa Doc, Baby Doc did not hate the bourgoisie, instead we were right by his side not to say that the country was moving cause it wasn't moving at least like many of us realize today, Haiti was cleaned & secured 1 US dollar was 5 gourdes & we were not run by NGOs. So Vive Duvalier!
