By the way, does anyone else think Nassim really meant "type I" rather than "type II" errors when discussing medicine? I thought that type I meant finding a problem when none exists and type II meant missing a problem that's really there, and he seems to be talking about the former.
As someone who just completed an internship in internal medicine, I find the conversation at 03:48 disturbingly accurate. American hospitals are under great pressure to "get 'em out quicker and sicker" in the name of cost-cutting. At the same time, nobody seems to have a problem with all of the admissions and re-admissions attributable to errors made by hurried, overextended doctors (I should add "undertrained"; genuine teaching hurts productivity and exposes an instiution to liability).
What's this place (^^;)? An ingenius place for those great minds to huddle together and discuss the most profound of topics in life, chance, randomness, illusion of control....I'll check out their book anyway.
