When he first started in theater, not at college, he did mime. He was taught by Marcel Marceau. He did mime for a long time before he got into acting with ASL and his "Visual Vernacular"

I agree he's a great performer! Amen. I don't know if he's mime. I know he sometimes had makeup on his face like mime. Maybe it represented something? Mime doesn't use language, but gesture. ASL is a language. He is also actor, great story teller and poet. I enjoyed watching him on PBS when I was kid.
