  • Is that...a didjeridoo? O_O

  • Rockabilly, at it's best!

  • Best Band song of all time?

  • i was thirteen when this song came out couldn't get enough of it......

  • ..........It's only the BADDEST jam ever........

  • this is fownkey!

  • If you listen only to the sound of Garth's synthesizer in 0:35 it seems of fair ... impressive...

  • @alexvizca5 It's an Lowrey Organ, not a Synthesizer. Garth didn't start experimenting with Synths until their later albums. Not trying to be a dick, I just happen to know a fair bit about the band

  • @jackbwise Stagefright, Cahoots, Northern Lights... ye, I know, but in that time, I didn't know this... thanks friend! :)

  • It's funny when some of the comments say "play that funky music". The Band is basically playing cowboy music with a funk influence. Odd but who cares, this song is groovy.

  • i don't like how if you search the band, you get the bend perry -_-

  • YOU DON'T LIKE IT? GET THE FUCK OUT!

  • 1969, what a fabulous time for music. Unfortunately those days are gone and music like this will never be recorded again.

  • @spideraxis

it is, we just don't know about it because it's not mainstream.

  • @spideraxis u got that ight

  • david all coe has a better take on the song

  • @shiftedx2 hahahahahahahahaha, no.

  • @shiftedx2 I disagree, not that his "take" is bad, but I've never heard his "take" on the radio, so I'm accustomed to this version, and I like it better.

  • I'm from Lake Charles Louisiana!!!!

  • @TwoIdiotsAndAPropGuy ......Hello from South Alabama brother. I worked on offshore drilling rigs with a lot of Lake Charles dudes. You an LSU fan? I wish I could find me a "Bessie" but i'm afraid there a'int any left.

  • PFFFFT

  • CTFxC

  • Rockin' song- gotta learn it

  • LOL - it doesn't matter what video it is - people always bitch about something. And I'm pretty sure floron's post was a variation of a joke from Family Guy.

  • Comment removed

  • i love the goofy piano :)

  • @butterfly000music lol me too, and i did some research, it's called a clavinet. it's the same thing used in Led Zeppelin's "Custard Pie" and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition"

  • This is music as it should be!!!!

  • haha livin in cali i blast The Band and everyone trips out like wtf is that? only older white people know and they always look at me like what? is that beaner listening to The Band, oh shit he knows the lyrics too. i love it. garth hudson mad genius on the organ.....

Maybe I was overwhelmed by being a mother, all I know is I love it !

  • My favorite band of all time...grew up watching the last waltz with my parents and sister....

  • never get tired of this one almost sounds like crickets in the background so real unlike today's music as u can get

  • I have loved this song for so many years! Thanks for sharing!

  • This is just great. I hadn't heard of these guys til my mate showed me The Last Waltz a couple months ago - I was blown away! Just brilliant music, that's it.

  • Cool!!

  • these guys are so underrated

  • @fuckingbloodeagle

How are they underrated? They're in the Rock Hall of Fame, two of their albums are on the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list from Rolling Stone Magazine, and they're also ranked as one of the best bands on the corresponding Rolling Stone list.

  • @californiarage i'm aware of that. but if you asked people to name some of the best rock bands ever, how many people do you know that would say "The Band"? not many i would think.. thats how it's been in my experience anyways..

  • @fuckingbloodeagle

Actually, what's interesting is that if you ask musicians, most of them will recognize "The Band" as one of the greats. Not so much with the normal, music listening crowd.

  • @californiarage well of course musicians will, i was talking more about the normal music listening crowd

  • @fuckingbloodeagle Thank god for that... nothing destroys something good faster than the masses finding it.

  • play that funky music!!!!

  • Why is it that all someone wants to do is compliment a great band and they get called Slanderous Names....... Boy this country is really getting mean and nasty. God Bless Us All, we cannot stand together as a country if we are all fighting and calling each other names! What a bunch of little babies we have become. Lord have Mercy on this USA!!!!

  • ...and they're Mormons.

  • "If Abe Lincoln ever wanted a band to play at the White House he would pick the Band"---Best one line description of a band ever. Fits.

  • Saw this band in Manchester, New Hampshire in the late 1970's. There were only about 35 people in the audience and they Rocked it just like there were 200,000! I felt like I had my own personal concert! Was "supposed" to go with husband at the time, he changed his mind..... BYE BYE !!!!! I had a great time!

  • @rmisso123

    slut.

  • @krookdad ---- You are one IMMATURE ASS. You do not know the 1970's. You do not know Me nor do you know my Ex Husband, RIP...... Lest not judge lest you be judged, so.... All I have to say to you is MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND TEACH YOU TO WALK IN OTHERS SHOES.

  • @rmisso123

Well I'm glad that you had a "Great time" at a party that your husband "decided to change his mind" about going to. From what you have told me, I'd rather die than hang out with you at a good concert also. Get your bull mess out of here you whore.

  • 9 people don't like doughnuts dipped in their tea.

  • This shit makes my big toe jump up in my boot!!

  • "This song was funk before funk even existed."

What a ridiculous thing to say.

  • Hard to say, but the greatest bunch of music-makers. Just heard Levon Helm tonite on Midnight Ramble. He's a true legend in his time, and on and on.

  • The Band is great. My personal favorite is The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. This song is good though. Happy Birthday Garth Hudson! Kudos to Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, and Rick Danko as well!

  • this is one of the best Canadian bands ever, one of the guys is from Windsor Ont where im from

  • JB sent me here BOY!!!

  • Ah one of the good ones that made my Falstaff smooth as I turned up the bottles with a smile.

  • saw a cover band do this this evening at the bar and it was """"magical""""

  • @perkis5000 a friend of our family is in a cover band, they played this song. sounded great! I remember hearing this song years ago when I was a kid but never knew what the hell it was about!

  • Now that is catchy!

  • @jmfootball93 So original to comment on the number of dislikes. I have never seen anyone do that. So refreshing. Thanks for making a comment about the number of dislikes. Again, I have never seen anyone do that for a song on youtube. Genius. And not annoying or irritating at all.

  • @floron1963 So original to see someone reply negatively about the comment about the number of dislikes that a video has. I have never seen anyone do that. So refreshing. Thanks for making a comment about the comment about the number of dislikes. Again, I have never seen anyone do that for a song on youtube. Genius, and not annoying or irritating at all.

You're both dumb asses, shut the hell up.

  • @DWSimmy So original to see a person randomly hate on something for making a comment. I have never seen anyone do that! So refreshing. Thanks for making a random hateful reply comment. Again, I have never seen anyone do that before on youtube. Genuis, and not annoying or irritating at all.

  • @longliverocknroll5 You're not making a comment. You're posting bullshit and wasting everyone's time. Act your age, unless you already are.

  • i guess 8 ppl have never been up on cripple creek....

  • press 7 repeateldy

  • hell yes, gulf coast! Yummy food, friendly folks. Always a blast. The Band one of the best bands ever. Levon Helms is a great man. A drummer who sings and writes. Who is better? He also plays mandolin, what?

  • a drunkards dream if i ever did see oneeeee

  • Up on cripple creek she sends me, if i sprang a leak she mends me, i don't have to speak she defends me, a jokers dream if i ever did see one. Is he talking about a womans love for him? That is funny.

  • @Vinci336 A drunkards dream.

  • @aircooledvw62 ...Yah, sounds like a drunkards dream. Bob Dylan's backup band at one time they were, Robertson and Danko.

  • Are they muslims or Zionits ?

  • This first time i heard this song was on star 80 when i was like 8. I liked it then. that movie was a little fucked up tho.

  • @davidomarine71 yeah you think?

  • Ray Charles, What Id Say was funk way before funk was funk. Book that.

  • Had this song in my head for a week i dont really know why but hey

  • had this in my head for a week dont know why

  • what the hell do drugs have to do with this song? O.o

  • that's Trucker's Dream .

  • I have the album on Vinyl, Great album

  • 7 people were crippled from dancing to this awesome song

  • thumbs up if you watched the last waltz

  • This song was funk before funk even existed. Thanks goes to the maestro Garth Hudson for the music, Robbie Robertson for the lyrics, and Levon for the great vocals. "Now me and my mate were back at the shack\We had Spike Jones on the box" What a great line, and the way it was sung just added to the coolness.

  • @TheSomniloquy Funk existed in 1970.. and it was funkier than this. Good song though

  • If you think funk didn't exist before this song, you're one ignorant individual.

In fact, if you believe this song even is funk (which it isn't by the way, it's country rock)

you really don't know much about music.

Funk is James Brown, Sly Stone, the Meters, The Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield etc, it's an

ATTITUDE that existed long before this tune.

  • a drunkard's dream if I ever did see one...

  • reminds me of wen i was stuck in rehab, goin thru detox. luckly i had my dads ipod.. soon as this came on, it took me str8 home. made everything ok again.

noww months later, here i sit smoking some nice nice weed on a beautiful day to some good tunes. =)

  • @butthead6886 good man

  • @butthead6886 weed is bad for you

  • @CPWindsorsub yeaaa but what isint these days... atleast weed thru a bong aint too bad. it gets u noiice n high. well worth it.

idk wat id do w.o bud

  • @butthead6886 well, ill never do drugs

  • @CPWindsorsub good. drugs r bad. weed aint tho, jus dont go into other things.

it does actually have some positive effects

  • @butthead6886 to me, weed is also bad, im staying away from it, along with other drugs

  • @butthead6886

heroin has some positive effects (kills pain). so does killing an old lady and taking her money(free money!). Nazi Germany also had some positive effects (NASA anyone?) . having positive effects should not be your only reason for doing something

  • My favorite song by The Band - always!

  • Great song. Would make a pretty raunchy tune if it was only instrumentals lol

  • Peace; love.

  • Four people have never been up on Cripple Creek!

  • Comment removed

  • There aren't any good women like Bessy left in this country. There are no drunkards dreams left. The god damn jezebels are all fuckin black guys. god damn what america has become. its sad man

  • im holding this record as we speak!

  • @TruthAxe: It's not a Hammond B3, Garth Hudson didn't really like them. He used a Lowrey organ, a Lincolnwood TSO-25 Deluxe version, apparently.

In any case, apparently our mileages vary. I don't particularly really like the sound of church organs, but I think festival and jazz organs sound really cool. For me, the fact that Hudson plays a carnival/circus kind of melody really adds something to the song. I love it.

  • @TheSaneArab the churchy organ is the lowrey the funky part is a clavinet

  • mexicansmell is so full of shit

  • everyone used to argue with me that this was Dr. hook i never knew the names of the band does anyone know??

  • And that is why Truth,we as a people are not free,or am I being far too grammatically correct for your virgin, tight minded ears...turn your spell check off on your computer and feel something for a change..

  • this song kicks ass

  • I'm from Cripple Creek. <3 :)

  • To all those who comment/troll/argue over nothing at all: you cannot reason with the irrational people in this world, just give up your crusade.

Ps this is a nice song... Makes me think of one of my friends

  • I love this song!

  • you ass clowns have taken a song that i love and decided to argue about issues in your lives that no one could possibly care about.

if I'm at a bar and this is on the juke box it gets played immediately after "the weight"

    great song

  • @midgetlord21 well now both you and me have added to the "argue(ments) about issues in y(our) lives that no one could possibly care about"

  • @midgetlord21 durrrrrrr

  • @midgetlord21 wow that's just what I did at home!! those two songs together!!! I must be in the wrong place cause I'm all alone tonight!

  • @midgetlord21 ~ funny you say that , if I'm at a bar and someone plays " I love this Bar" I immediately play Dream Theater's "Change of Seasons" lol

Had a neck freakin out cause he though six "crappy" songs went by while it says the same one is on .. it must be broke ! LOL

  • Okay I can say since there is so much crap on here is that I have always loved this song. If you don't like it....don't listen.

  • Fur traps on creeks that cripple and torture animals before they die or chew off their own limbs.

  • three people are tone deaf.....or rhythmly challenged or maybe they are cross eyed and thought they were hitting like. that would make more sense.

  • I bought an original copy of this on Vinyl today :). Apparently someone named Brian needed to put his name in Green Sharpie on the front, but who cares the vinyl is mint, and the sleeve is mint except for his name.

  • Makes me think of my Sister, God rest her soul. I was not much more than a child and she would be singing along to this song as she got ready to go out dancing. :)

  • Makes me think of my Sister, God rest her soul. I was not much more than a child and she would be singing along to this song as she got ready to go out dancing. :)

  • firstly, it was an international effort: goes to show you what americans and canadians can do if we unite for one vision.

    secondly. fuck yeah.

  • This song could be improved by ridding it of the organ and mixing in more piano. The organ sounds like crap.

  • @TruthAxe You obviously have never tripped on acid. You may have not even smoked weed from the sound of it. And, by the way, the organ and clavinet are the lead instruments in the song, whereas the piano and guitar are coupled together to add texture. The organ is amazing.

  • You amuse, @mexicansmell. If you're going to express yourself with a Latinate adverb like 'obviously', do so with expressive force. NEVER insert an adverb between a subject and it's action.

WRONG: "You obviously have never tripped on acid."

BETTER: You have never tripped on acid, obviously!

It's better altogether if you stop expressing with such frivolous adverbs as obviously.

  • @TruthAxe You obviously have psychological problems. This is not a basic Composition class; I'm allowed to write colloquially. I wonder if you have any social skills at all.

Don't try to give grammatical lessons if your own grammar isn't flawless itself (it's action), thereby stirring up some serious ethos problems. Who the fuck are you, then? Shut the fuck up. Take a Rhetoric class.

By the way, musical taste is completely subjective. Your comment exhibits an archaic mode of human rationality.
