Because the speaker/headphone jack assembly has absolutely nothing to do with the part of the hardware responsible for playing the games, the "engine" as you called it. (Although the proper term is "platform" most likely). It looks like the fat DS had some kind of two-way jack. I could see this functionality being useful with Korg's DS-10 DS Synthesizer program. Either way it's probably some vestigial leftover from the DS's development that was removed from the Lite for being silly or something.
