I would have forgotten this piece of history in my life, hadn't I heard this unforgettable soul gem, which is a blast from the past, on youtube.... Peace & Love, REDDINGS BROTHERS..... {No matter where you are}
Protesting, that a black/soul radio station is not wanted nor desired, [in iowa at all] & that there were "enough", "radio stations", "to suit every ones taste"..... The then governor for iowa, [ironically enough, republican] felt that there was "always room for "racial & cultural grown", allowing the radio station to have any, & all broadcasting rights, like any [anglo american] radio station in des moines, ia......
It was 1981, & I lived in one of the most racist & white of the whitest state in the u.s.a., (Des Moines, Iowa),
when this [hot] soul dance cut, came out..... It was also the same year, that Des Moines Iowa, got its "wake up" call getting its very first black radio station..... Who protested the most?: Certainly, not the people of {Des Moines} Iowa: Just the anglo aryan state officials, of the time.... [Such as the REPUBLICAN anglo aryan congressmen, congress women, senators, etc] (p.1)
This didn't get much airplay on the West Coast. I really don't remember this at all. After "Remote Control" and "Hand Dance" I didn't think they had anything else to offer. This is just as good as the other two. They played the hell out of a bass. Another original old school cut.
Well, this got alot of play in Seattle, WA. Cause i remember this song, and "I Know You Got Another". So, it got some west coast love. This really didn't get any love, where your from ? This song is hot to death, still to this day. By the way, much props for mentioning "Hand Dance". I don't hear alot of people mention this song.
I happened to meet Les Claypool before he did a remake of "The Awakening". I've always felt the Reddings did a much better job. This bass is so cruel....
this is one reason I liked this song. The bass line is a killer!!!!!!!!!!! I told my nephew that they do not know anything about real musicianship. Everything is sample nowadays. Now, I do like todays music (some of it) because it helps bring back the old school. But, back then, music was for real
funk cant get no better then this, this reminds of the days when bass players had to have the groove in the pocket, and there thing had to be niiiiiiiice as a mofo.
ANyone know where I can find hand dance? Brings back memories...these guys were not promoted deservingly of their talent...I loved their music...and man I miss em...Otis would have been so proud of them as well! Thanks for posting this!
I use to run across this song at Goodwill stores. It's just a shame that where I live there are not any record stores that actually sell albums! I should've bought a album when I ran across it. I use to love them so!
You can find a few of their songs on Limewire...but it depends on your timing. I ound about 6 Reddings songs. I still have an old album cover but no album..they were talented.
CLASS!

Wow...I love this bass slapping....let's all get down

Dexter is slapping the s--t out of that bass. Still to this day no one has the funk he has on bass. This group was ahead of I'ts time.

Dexter was very under-rated as "a bassist "out side the R&B and funk circle, he should've graced the cover of bass player magazine at least once.
