One of my favorite scenes with Kristie Alley. The best part:@ 3:30, when Virgilia tells James :"YOU SEE HIM AS A NIGGER,BUT I SEE HIM AS A MAN WHO DESERVES TO BE FREE. one day you'll all understand what's about to happen here."
@KentuckRoad You said it KY. I totally agree.... the lavish parties, the elegance, the privileged way of life... Imagine going back in time and being a part of the Cottonacracy.... Rebelicious!
@plantationmuscleboy I have lots of ancestors that fought for the glorious Confederacy, and think about those times almost everyday. I would love to go back in time to that era. I love that word "Rebelicious! will have to add that to my vocabulary. If I could have been born about 1835. As a teenager find me a Southern Belle to Court, with the fire of Ashton in her heart, attend the parties, have a fine carriage, be skilled in swordsmanship, and chivalry. The old South is never far away.
@MrSeanodwyer140 We who live in the South will celebrate with Reenactments, Living Historys, flying our beloved Confederate Flags, talking among ourselves of the glorious days when our ancestors broke away from the Evil Union and fought for what we believed. Some of us will work for that day when once again the Southern States will see the rise of the second Confederacy Movement, there are groups working behind the scenes right now planning that very thing
@Juwar1974 Well, with my ancestors, the slaves helped them to be prosperious. My ancestors treated there slaves well from what I have been told. The "Uncle Tom's Cabin" version of slavery only happened rarely. Slaves were expensive property, if they were in ill health or couldn't work it cost a lot of money, so you kept your property well and able to work. Only a few were treated poorly, and that was when they mostly deserved it. Being a slave was hard work, I don't deny that at all.
@KentuckRoad Have u lost your f"""""ing mind! The mental health of slavery was deplorable, and it was that slave mentality that has been passed on from generation to generation. this was what was most egregious about American slavery. It just wasn't isolated to before the civil war. It's legacy could be felt and seen in african americans today--particular their political views, some views of education, the role of government, etc...
Don't forget its profound impact on their religious culture. This was magnified further in the south (and its black community) after the devastation of the civil war - and the hope/comfort their religion offered them during and long after these desperate times. The christian religion became a thoroughly entrenced part of the South's culture (particularly its black community, which was left even more devastated/poor). Just remember that most televangelists possess southern accents!
This is one of the first things I ever saw Kirstie Alley in when I was a kid. This was before Cheers which was such a stupid role. She is such a great dramatic actress. I wish she had stayed on the dramatic path. I'd love to see more work by her of this quality.
OMG this is THE BOMB from start to finish. Virgilia (defiant troublemaker), Huntoon(pompous windbag/weak willed husband) and Ashton(that bitch), and everyone else caught in between.
bullshit alien, discarding the propaganda hat has been brought forth in the coming of the 20th and 21st centuries, a lot and quite a lot including southerners who owned slaves didnt like slavery but thought it was gods will in gods time, but i do not belivee whites were any sort of problem there were bad apples there is one in every family, every race, every country, lee set alot of his slaves before the war and his slaves were prtial to lee, as was jacksons, and many others,
Virgilia said, "You see him as a sinner, and I see him as a man who deserves to be free." Her speech full of grief and indignation is so powerful and touching.
Notice how all the whites except the one woman see it as a bad thing that she might help the Black man escape.
Almost all whites wanted went along with slavery. Today, whites enjoy rewriting the past to blame the institution of slavery on southern whites. All whites were the problem. North and South, as this film accurately demonstrates (even though it is a shit film).
This problem between and amongst all whites is contemporarily understood as the Republican and Democratic parties.
Wow I just love that scene... that Huntoon is such a silly fool! Calling Virgilia a whore, for her relationship with a black man, and the only real whore of the film was his own fiancée...
Missy Ashton cheated on him about a thousand times with whoever she got between her fingers, lol. but he deserved it well, that moron :-)
She was so, but so right... wish there were more ladies with the courage she had. Even when she got insane, it´s sad that she had so much to suffer and that she had such a tragic end
I can see the conflict within Orry as he tells the Hazzards that they must leave Mont Royal. Although I do admit I wish Orry would have not sent them home so soon. But I do understand why he was compelled to do so.
The best mini series of all time. Watch charles' face at about 2:45. Priceless! The tension that builds between the 2 sides becomes so real to the viewer that you can feel it as if you were indeed living in those tragic times. The final scence from book one is heartbreaking as best friends know thier is nothing left but war.
I LOVE that Isabel decides to take another biscuit before leaving the table (5:20-5:23- always makes me laugh)! She didn't get enough breakfast, and it is a long trip from Mont Royal to Charleston... a girl's gotta eat something!
I thought that the entire mini series was wonderful. When I got to high school, I checked out the books from the libarary. Darn near took me about a year to get threw them all as they are all huge. It's quite easy to see how this series became so long a tale. And if you really liked the Three Miniseries, you should check out John Jake's Trillogy. There's "North and South" "Love and War" and "Heaven and Hell."
this was the best t.v miniseries ever...the talent where the bests of the time....Ashton Main was the best as we only knew this actress through Dynasty.....
