A couple of years ago, Randy Mantooth got interviewed on a medical show in Canada. He said that all the actors actually took enough of the real paramedic course to look realistic on TV. The show was created to help promote the paramedic service which was just starting in the US around 1970. They had to have a real fireman in the cast to drive the fire reel. And the actors from the show regularly go out on the road promoting paramedic and EMS services to this day. Very very impressive!
How ironic! Bobby Sherman is in this as a nurse during his teen heartthrob days. Now he is a fully certified EMT and serves as a medical training officer for the LAPD.
@bhkidd He played an intern in this episode. I read somewhere that he was asked if that role was what got him interested and he said No, that it was while his children were little.
He was a good role model then and even more so now!
TV used to entertain. Now it's a parade of fools on reality slop, people who like to air their dirty laundry and think we're all interested. We have to stop watching, folks, and it will go away.
@ambersalcove No, Kevin Didn't become a Firefighter. He is still acting. If I remember correctly he is doing plays now and is doing very well. I also believe he has a fan site.
I am currently uploading the rest of the Great Rescues of Emergency! episode on my channel since it's not on DVD or the Internet. Check out my channel
It will be out in a couple of months. I got a notice from Amazon that my shipment of Season 7 will be sent out between April 1 - 5. I saw somewhere else it will be released on March 29th.
@PrinceWatercress I couldn't agree more! I am hard press to find a show that meets this quality. It's still around after thirty some years, that should say something about how great the show is!
@PrinceWatercress Where this show is concerned I will always agree. It's the best ever! I will always love it! I never tire of watching the episodes. NEVER!
LOVED THIS SHOW THIS SHOW INSPIRED ME TO WANT TO BECOME A FIREFIGHTER AND IN 1992 THE DREAM BECAME A REALITY AND TO THIS DAY I AM STILL IN PUBLIC SERVICE IN THE FIRE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELD! NOTHING I KNOW MEANS MORE THAN SAVING A LIFE!
too bad the modern version of emergency Trauma didn't make it past 1 season. also didn't you hate how Nancy kissed her partner and we dont know what happened because the show was cancelled
My favorite episode of Emergency! was the special "Emergency! Greatest Rescues", that included the clips of the lady that got her big toe stuck in the bathtub faucet and the lady that had trouble breathing from wearing a girdle that was too small and too tight, and it had to be cut off. Johnny got the honors of cutting it off and once he made the last snip with the scissors, it came off and smacked him in the face!
I agree..... Randolph Mantooth was / is something else! I had a HUGE crush on him back then. I don't remember Bobby Sherman being on the show!!! WOW, Randy and Bobby in one show.... I must have been drooling as an 8-year-old! LOL. :)
My only real childhood memory of this show was the episode when a truck that was carrying a shipment of tomatoes lost control, spilling tomatoes onto another driver...something like that. :)
I loved this show this brings back so many memories. I used to stay at my great grand parents house and on Saturdays I used to have to watch Lawrence Welk before I could watch Emergency and then Adam 12 I miss those days and I miss my grandparents memories are GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This episode showed that the paramedic program still had some unbelievers like Sherman's character, a second generation doctor. After almost fatally diagnosing a heart attack victim, Sherman rides with the squad. They get a girl out of a mailbox, which gets a good laugh, but things turn deadly when they rescue another heart attack victim trapped on a ledge during a refinery fire. Sherman sees first hand what they go through and his opinion changes.
@austin39028 They do have the first six seasons on DVD now so if you are able to get them, you could once again enjoy this wonderful show. It's still great after all these years!
We used to watch this in the U.K back in the 1970s when the ambulance crews over here were just stretcher bearers. The Ambulance service now is 100% paramedic...And they even use the same sound sirens on their vehicles too.
i am a firefighter/paramedic today directly because of this show. watching this sure shows how far we have come in the fire service/EMS. today if it is in my med box i can give it without contacting medical control for "orders," and the only time we send an EKG strip is if we are on the scene of an acute STEMI, and then it is to the cath lab so they can be ready for the patient. this show ROCKS!!!!
Nelson Riddle composed the main title music for the television show named "Route 66".
Bobby Troup wrote the lyrics for the song that cajoled you to "get your kicks on Route 66", essentially a sales pitch for the highway. So you're both right.
Man I loved this show. This and Adam -12. If anyone remembers episodes of Adam-12 when there would be a wreck or a fire, and all of a sudden on screen the Squad 51 and Engine 51 trucks would appear. It was like all our heroes coming together. I loved that!
I can't see why not! They always looked like they would fit in anywhere, 2 million or 2,000 people. It never looked like acting...they looked like they worked there with the other actual firemen in the cast.
THAT has to be why people love this show so much. It hits a big harmonious chord with them.
I like how Kelly Brackett MD would give an IV-D5W to EVERY patient for EVERY condition. You could come into Rampart with Bad breath or hemmorids & he'd have U hooked up to an IV-D5w before he could get a glimpse up Julie London's dress. :)
Another bit o' trivia...the episode "Fools" was a precursor to Bobby Sherman's becoming a real-life paramedic...ended up as the chief paramedic trainer for Los Angeles County...not bad for a pain-in-the-paramedics-butt-doctor...
And the funny part is that Bobby Sherman, just two years earlier, was the lead on an ABC series entitled "Getting Together", which aired, ironically, on Saturday nights.
I only missed one episode and that was after my mom passed away. The last episode we watched together was Emergency! that Staurday night. Saturady's at 8PM sharp! That was my TV time. My brothers didn't know but after every episode I would follow mom into the kitchen and ask if I could watch it next week. She always said yes. She loved the show also.
I looked up some info on the series and found that Emergency was the catalyst of modern EMS in use today. The one thing I thought at the time was that the show had more equipment than most real departments at the time. I KNOW A CERTAIN FRIEND OF MINE WILL BE HAPPY THEN TOO!!!
HAVE NO IDEA WHY SHE HASN"T GOTTEN TIRED OF ME WATCHING WHAT I HAVE ALREADY EVERY NIGHT!!!! LOL Evertime she calls, I put on an Emergency! episode! Hey! When there's something that good to watch, why watch anything else! RIGHT?!
Hmmm, well, maybe your friend just enjoys the show a lot too, or maybe it's her way of trying to show you that everything that is important to you is important to her as well.
What variation of the "Emergency!" theme (heard from 0:00 to 1:02) was this from? Must be from later seasons, because the music is much faster and more upbeat than in earlier seasons.
Well, that's true...I guess I am just going to have to make the sacrific and bit the bulett! LOL Yea, like it will be such a hardship on me! NOT!!!!! LOL
Ah, to be 12 years old again! I loved John Gage and my best friend had a thing for Roy. We actually did an MST3K-type audio recording with one of the episodes one afternoon, pretending we were right there with the guys at the fire... it was a blast! Thanks for posting this!
It's Saturday night all over again. When I was a kid and I heard this theme music I ran to the tv. I had to see my man,Johnny Gage. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep it up!!
I know what you mean! It was the highlight of my week! To make sure that I could watch it ever Saturday night I would go into the kitchen and ask my mom if I could watch it the next week. She always said yes. Made my brothers and sisters soooo mad!!! LOL
They never knew why I got to watch the show every week until after our mother passed away in 73.
Saturday Nights were my best nights. I had to settle for black, and white though until we got a colr t.v., but after the 1st episode, I was hooked! After that, I looked forward to Sat nights, and my favorite show
This show is what got me in to this line of work. We need more shows like this.
