I never thought as a young man nearly 40 years ago getting stoned listening to Leonard Cohen, that I'd still be in awe of his voice and, getting stoned still listening!!!
i don't know what to say at the moment... it was beyond amazing. there is no word that would describe him and his song right in any language of the universe. you just have to feel it!
so many copycats and only one original..the idol kid that sang this didn't have the cojones, the soul, the pain, the angst of having lived a deep love of a woman to understand the depth of emotion required to carry this song. The kid was like a chip of wood bobbing on the ocean compared to a whale dancing in the deep in its environ of love..sorry,kids..no one compares to Leonard Cohen!! No one!!
There are many great versions of this song, by many artists, but there is something about a songwriter's own version that almost always wins my heart. They have the best feel for their own songs. And the older this man gets, the more I love his deep smokey voice~!
This song reminds me of my wife and how fragile love. I can't help but shed a few tears when i hear it. I guess it hits me deep with in my soul. And as for the debate who sounds better it will always be the great Mr. Cohen
@daffydilly1 lang sang the song... this man WROTE IT... by te way for some people prefers jeff buckley instead of lang... i like john cale the better... i like lang more than buckley.. if you want the best cover here in youtube check HALLELUJAH where performs alejandro fuentes, kurt nilsen and others
The master expresses the ineffable. There are not enough superlatives to describe the magic that Leonard Cohen gave to this song to hold. Thank you, my friend, for this gift. Hallelujah!
He is a poet, a great Gentlemen and one of best .... I listen to him at least 2 times a day and cannot get enough of his lyrics, his voice and the truth in all his songs..
OMG I've listened to maybe 100 different recordings of this (my favorite song), sung by LC and everyone else on the planet. This is my favorite of ALL of them. He just puts it all together like nothing I've ever heard before or expect to see again. Everything is perfect, powerful, transcendent, multidimensional, passionate, sensitive, and wow, what a master!
It's not his best song, though these days it's probably surpassed "Suzanne" as his best known. Personally I think "If It Be Your Will", "Anthem" or "Diamonds in The Mine" might vie for that credit ... but ye gods, Cohen could sing the New York telephone directory and time would stand still.
Like a good wine, this man truly improves with age. Saw him in Edinburgh in 1974 and again in 2008. Same poet, same soul, deep and gravelly voice a real improvement. How can people call him depressive? There is a dark and thrilling humour running through his songs. Go on, Lenny!
A lot of artist left the last verses out when they recorded it. I believe that all these verses are original to this masterpiece by Mr. Leonard Cohen. It's a shame that several verses are left out many times because they really complete this amazing song. This song speaks to me. Originally, it says "I didn't come here to fool you", he threw "Helsinki" in because that's where he was.
The Master making magic. One question: What's up with the last verse? I've never heard it used it before, and the way the audience laughed, it seemed like an inside joke...
@LaMascollaise Oh, cool, thx for the info! See? That's what happens when a covered version gets more play than the original: people (like me) get used to the lyrics, arrangement, etc. in the cover, and when they hear the original, it's easy to get thrown for a loop (like me!). Thx again. Have you ever seen him perform? He's been by this way twice in the last two years, and I couldn't go. (btw, don't apologize for your english--you speak better than many American-born folks I've met!) Peace!
ehhm no , I never saw him performing.. see , I am only 16 Years old..
and my Music is more like The Kelly Family ;D
i covered the Song too , but it's sad , that more People know the cover versions , like from Jeff Buckley or Rufus Wainwright.. or the most stupid cover version here in germany .. you might know everybody's joking about your mother.. and so there is a "Deine Mutter Song" - "Your Mother Song"
no will ever perform this song like Cohen. He wrote these words and only he will every truely know the emotion behind them...Whenever I feel sad or lonely I just play this over and over again. I won't say it make me feel any happier. But it makes me feel like all we can do as human beings is face what comes our way and turn to what we still have. For some it may be love, religion, freindship...the little things that make life life...Even pain can make us feel alive...
@edelweiss1001 its a cold and its a verry broken hallelujah, sometimes we screw up and do something that will change our life forever and we cant get it back so all we can do is move on and say at least I still have God hallelujah well anyway thats my interpritation today but like most things that come from above they are alive and the meening can be flued
Much better than the one on here from the documentary. Extremely powerful - probably because he knows life's coming to an end soon. I'd sing like there's no tomorrow too if I had his voice at his age!
@james4piano Leonard Cohen could live another 10-15 years so I really don't think you should say he knows life's coming to an end soon. Nevertheless, he sings this song so beautifully. Let's hope he's with us for many more years to come !!
Loved it .. from the master himself, the truest emotional rendition of the song I have ever heard. It almost is painful in its sincerity. Some songwriters cannot bring that breath of life into their words, but Mr. Cohen gave it more vitality than anyone else could possibly impart. My hat is off to him .. and, Leonard, you CAN sing!
I had just discovered Leonard Cohen few days ago; I'm listening to him in the morning and in the evening....cannot have enough! It is all of him: the voice, the lyrics, the choice of words, the rhythm, the tempo etc.etc., and how well he makes me feel...I am 63 and music has been my passion my entire life...Now, I can whole heartedly fall into it all....Incredible! So authentic and so awesome!
@efelibra The same thing happened to me...in 1973. It is the whole package that keeps me enchanted. I am 59 and am happy that you have discovered the master.
@painxtreme also look for a cd by a guy named Joe Henry called Fuse, and of course, any Tom Waits...if this wonderful writing and textured vocals moves you, neither of the 2 performers I mentioned will do anything but delight you. A great Tom Waits album to start with is called Rain Dogs.
This man is incredible. Nobody else will ever be able to put the whole heart to this song and give it the true meaning it has. When you hear this, you must stop and just listen, fascinated and moved.
I bought Live in London recently, and the power of his performance there is incredible... the ability of this amazing singer songwriter to keep going at his age is absolutely a miracle of human endeavour
@jasonyoungdenmark That's also why I love him so much. There are many good or even briliant artists in the world, but only very few possess this almost visible spirit of something deeper and meaningful for whole their lives... OK, let's quit the babbling, he's one in a million:-)

I did my bets
It wasn't much
I couldn't feel
So I learnt to touch
RIP dear friend - Leonard says it so much better than me as he did at your funeral

@nndirk - isn't this the english version??? but really, you don't even need to understand the words to feel it (but is sure is nice if you can). :)
