Lolation. Aw. Can't believe all three of them are gone now. :( Of course, being given jelly babies is the best way to have your performance sabotaged. :) Maybe I was born WAAAAAAY too late.
isn't it ironic? most users say that troughton and pertwee were always funny but when they officially meet in seriels and episodes, the 2nd and 3rd doctors abosuluetely hate each other...
I know Doctor Who mostly through reruns on U.S. public television; I've had to reconstruct what the series was about. A succession of actors played the Doctor, each with his own interpretation of the character. Little things don't make sense to me that do make sense to long-time viewers. I thought the jelly baby candy was strictly a Tom Baker thing, but here we see the earlier actors indulging in them. I don't remember any early episode showing Troughton or Pertwee eating jelly babies.
@wdd3141 This isn't officially part of the show. It's what was going on between takes. Apparently in real life Troughton liked jelly babies, even if his Doctor never ate them.
@wdd3141 On screen it was mostly a Tom Baker thing, but Pat Troughton liked Jelly Babies in real life and was actually the first doctor to use Tom's famous line. He offered someone (I think it was the brigadier) a jelly baby in the 10 year anniversary special "The Three Doctors". It was the only time his doc had jelly babies on screen though. Tom had it as a catchphrase and a couple of later doctors would say the line once or twice in their era as a tribute.
@gd070510 Actually, Pat was also eating Jelly Babies in The Dominators (the little white pouch), but he doesn't actually state what he likes to nibble until The Three Doctors. Tom got it from him, but made it extra famous. There's an adorable photo of Pat at a convention with a "I ♥ Jon" sticker on his forehead. Pat and Jon were great fun together (Pat's biggest pal, of course, was Frazer!).
@nileqt1987 Ah thanks, not got round to seeing that one yet. Seen every episode from the Pertwee era onwards but having trouble tracking down a lot of the Hartnell and Troughton episodes. I believe The Dominators is on DVD now so hopefully I'll be able to watch it soon and will keep my eyes open for the jelly babies.
When i hear 'There was one on the set when we came on' i can just imagine Patrick making a trail of jelly babies along the floor like some sort of Hansel and Gretel spoof :D xx
Really heart warming to hear that Matt Smith regards Troughton as his favourite Doctor. Think its about time the Beeb showed a classic repeat season when the latest series ends
As funny as this is, you kind of have to feel bad for Richard Hurndall, just awkwardly mumbling and repeating everything Pertwee's saying. He didn't do that bad a job in this story, but you've gotta think it was slightly uncomfortable to be standing next to two original Doctors and know that you're going to be compared to the missing one.
@singingduckgopher They were all mumbling; I don't know what you see as being awkward. Hurndall and Pertwee were friends and regarded one another as equals.
The final arbiter as regards Hurndall's suitablility to play Susan's grandfather was the one whose opinion mattered the most: Carole Ann Ford. When she first met Hurndall she thought, "Yeah, he should do." And when she first saw him in costume and wig, she was bowled over!
As to characers' ages in Classic Who, Susan was 15 (at least by appearances; as a Time Lady she may have been 60), Vicki was 16, and Dodo was no older than 18. Victoria, Jamie, Zoe, Adric, Nyssa, Turlough, Peri, Ace, and Chang Lee were all teenagers.
Peri became an adult during her time with the Doctor, but we never saw her past the age of 22 or so, and Zoe may well have been as young as 12 when she first appeared.
You aren't stupid; I see what you were getting at.
As for the Doctor, with you on the first point (first time we met him, he was probably about 500 or so), not so much on the second; think of some of Troughton and Tennant's antics.
@MaskedMan66 I believe wendy padbury was about 17 when she started playing a Zoe Heriot in the troughton years after Victoria left. She always looked younger than she seems, and maybe playing as a 14 year old plus I think she was the first companion on DR WHO who was from the year 2000, until the newer series with Rose and the Eccleson/tennant series. I liked Tennant because he was like patrick's version sometimes, especially when the plan is to just run away!
@moxie96 Likely enough; it's not at all unusual for a small, young-looking adult to be cast as a teenager, especially if they plan on keeping the kid around a while. Also, as in the case of Burt Ward playing Robin on "Batman," it wouldn't do for a reall teen actor to suddenly have a growth spurt and all of a sudden be taller than the lead actor.
It was always a joy to see them, and they brought a real magic with them. The first three Doctors were wizards and pioneers and true heroes, and the conventions somehow became less special after Troughton and Pertwee died.
Mind, I don't mean to dis the living Doctors; they're always a joy to see as well. But the first three came from a time when people really believed in and loved the show. Folks love it now, but most often it's with a certain condescension .
I may be misusing the word. I mean they're a little patronizing to it. They refuse to completely suspend their disbelief, and they watch it with a measure of snideness.
We must always remember that "Doctor Who" began as a children's show, and as such it requires a certain level of childlike innocence to appreciate it fully.
But a strictly "adult" and even "rational" frame of mind is by itself unsuited to the show, or indeed any science fiction or fantasy offering. There has to be suspension of disbelief of the sort of which only a child or a childlike adult is capable.
You tell me, then we'll both know. But the fact remains that they do. I talk to people at conventions, and for every person who speaks glowingly of the original series, there's someone who says, "Oh, yeah, I watched it, and I still enjoy it-- for the lousy effects and the bad acting and the silly scripts."
Hurndall really did a wonderful job as the First Doctor, and it's great to see him give Troughton a bit of business ("Put them away!" he mutters along with Pertwee at 0:17) just as I reckon Hartnell would have done.
Why The Bleep is Ø up there like a scientific sign? checked it on wiki its not... well in danish we use it in math as a short of circumference (omkreds) but does that really qualify?
So freaking cute! I hear that both of them were a joy to work with.
